World records in swimming compared to records in athletics - interesting observationsTwo days ago, I did a post looking at the absolute "cleansing" of the record books in the sport of swimming this year. 70 records in 2008, 66 Olympic records in the recent Beijing Olympics, and swimmers who began the year as world record holders (think Alexander Popov) suddenly find themselves outside the top 10

Here's another of the local clubs that deserves a bit of publicity. Hard-working athletes of all ages, dedicated volunteers and some miserable weather to endure!.Had an email from a work colleague who said it would be ok to take a few snaps, so with Sunday lunch tucked away in th'oven and bubbling away nicely I popped over to the Cumberland track at the bottom Thomas Street (as an aside, the parking there is due to become a paid car park soon. Does this mean that young athletes will also have to pay on a Sunday? Hardly an incentive that, is it?). Anyway, it was all part of the Cheshire Track & Field League, with around 40 events scheduled across the wet afternoon. This from the Courier-Journal: Superintendents discourage public schools from playing private schoolsLEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Association of School Superintendents, which represents 174 public-school districts in the state, endorsed a plan today that would eventually mean fewer sports contests against private schools.Kentucky’s public and private high schools have been at odds over athletics for at least three years; public schools contend that private schools have an advantage because they can draw their students – and athletes – from large geographic areas, and public schools are much more restricted. The KASS revealed its “schedule reduction” plan today, and their executive director, Blake Haselton, paid a courtesy call on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’

Let’s face it, in America we idolize our athletes. We pay them exorbitant salaries and elevate them to hero-like status. For our youngsters, the attention we lavish on these individuals leads America’s young people to believe that becoming a professional athlete is the surest way to live the American dream.
Often parents, in turn, perpetuate the problem. The notion that an athletic scholarship

Nutrition for Middle-Distance Running
Presenter: Trent Stellingwerff (SUI)
Middle-distance running is at the cross roads of training stimuli used for running events. After nearly matching the mileage of marathon runners in the base phase, middle-distance runners proceed to almost the intensity used by sprinters during the racing season. The different phases of the training programme require different amounts of energy and different macronutrient content. Towards the racing season, the total energy needs are not as high as during base training. However, because of the intensity of training, the relative reliance on CHO use is higher. Protein needs also differ between seasons. The recommended fat intake is based on estimated total energy needs minus CHO and protei

Nutrition for Sprints
Presenter: Kevin Tipton (GBR)
Although nutrition for the sprint events has not received as much attention as it does in distance running, it can have a profound effect on recovery from training and competition, training adaptations and power to weight ratio. General recommendations for all sprinters are, at best, useless. Very specific guidelines cannot and should not be given for macronutrient intakes Individual needs should be considered and only ranges should be given.
Recommendations for use of specific foods to ward off drowsiness or improve reaction time cannot be given at this time because of a lack of data to either support or discount the effects.
Race day foods and drinks should be individually tested so that the chance o
One of the goodies from the USATF 2007 National Podium Education Project was a handout and/or CD from the IAAF 2nd International Consensus Conference on “Nutrition for Athletics” in Monaco from April 18-20 2007. (You were only allowed to take the CD or booklet!)
The stated aim of the conference was to help shape the priorities of both the IAAF Medical and Anti-Doping Commission and the International Olympic Committee’s working group on nutrition over the next few years. The presentation and discussion of papers prepared by expert teams in 12 key areas reflected the research and advancements in knowledge that have taken place since the first IAAF conference on this topic in 1995.
At the end of the conference, a statement integrating the presentations was issued called “Nutrition for Athletics: The 2007 Consensus Statement of the IAAF”.
The conclusion?
“Well-chosen foods will help athletes train hard, reduce risk of illness and injury, and achieve the

Basically, it meant coming in top 3, and not leaving the rest to chance.
I got lane 2, which is normally an unfavorable lane, but this track was a “fat” track: 122 meter curve and 78 meter straightaway!
I had a good start, with a little pop-up instead of driving out of the blocks. I immediately make up the stagger on 2 guys, but De Feo of Italy makes up the stagger on me within 60 meters. Isashi of Japan runs well out of lane 6, so I ended up in 3rd place. I am relieved as I don’t have to wait for the next 8 heats to see if I qualify on time.

Former House Speaker T.K. Wetherell just named Republican Rep. William "Bill" Proctor (left) of St. Augustine to be his temporary administrator overseeing athletics at Florida State University
The official, just-created title is "Special Assistant to the President for Athletics." Proctor steps in Nov. 5 for ousted athletic director Dave Hart Jr., who signed a separation agreement with FSU Thursday and officially leaves Dec. 31.
Proctor, 74, will not be considered a candidate for the permanent athletics director position. The longtime Flagler College president served on the Florida Education Standards Commission from 1995 to 2000 and on the state's Board of Education from 2001 to 2004. He's also a member of FSU's Athletic Hall of Fame.
"It has often been said that if you want something done right, give it to the busiest person in town," Wetherell said. "Bill's experience as a coach, teacher, administrator and longtime leader within higher education is just what we need now. His

In this race, I am in Lane 6 and I get a horrible start, as I popped up immediately after the gun. I won’t make excuses, but a lack of racing didn’t help (this was only my 3rd 100m of the year). In order to peak for a 100m, you have to run 5-7 races under your belt in a given season. For a 400m, 3-5 races is sufficient.

Kelly Sotherton has added another medal to her collection after winning bronze in the heptathlon during the World Athletics Championship in Osaka, Japan this weekend. Having spent the majority of the competition in a medal-winning position, Kelly slipped to fourth after a disappointing javelin event. However, she pulled it back in the 800m to win Britain's first medal in this year's competition. Jessica Ennis, Kelly's British team-mate, finished fourth overall in her first appearance at the World Championships. Here at Prawn Cufflinks, we say congratulations to both! We've uploaded nearly 100 pictures from the event (many in high quality) to the Kelly Sotherton gallery. We've also added a new page for Jessica Ennis and a long-overdue gallery for Carolina Kluft (this year's gold medallist). The World Championships continue for the rest of the week.
By Al TerryOakland Athletics tickets are not always easy to come by. That's because baseball fans know that an Oakland Athletics game is going to mean good baseball. Not only is the team known for its impressive number of World Series wins, but also for its history that many like to see in terms of different dynasties. The Oakland Athletics are part of the Major League and is affiliated with the West Division and the American League. Their home games are played at McAfee Coliseum. They have nine World Series and fifteen American League wins to their name. They are often referred to as the A's, the Elephants or the White Elephants. The White ElephantsWhile the team itself was born in 1901, it wouldn't be until 1968 that the team began to play from Oakland. Before that, the Athletics played from Philadelphia and then Kansas City. One of their former owners referred to the team as a 'white elephant' and though the team proved that it was anything but that, the name stuck. The early year
Who says college sports don't benefit academic programs?
UF's athletic association will donate $6-million to support several academic initiatives threatened by the looming state budget cuts, UF president Bernie Machen announced today.
"Our athletics programs have had tremendous success during the past couple of years," Machen said. "It takes a great academic university to be a top athletic university."
Some of the money will sustain the Florida Opportunity Scholars program, which covers tuition, room and board for low-income students who are the first in their family to attend a four-year university.
UAA has given nearly $40 million back to the university since 1990.
In response to our last two athletics posts on Sipho Ngomane and Alistair Cragg, we’ve received some quite good questions and comments from people who, like us, share the frustration at the state of the sport in South Africa. So this post is a response and comment, which we thought would be good as a stand-alone article. Are the Ultras to Blame? The first comment that we received is that the Ultra-marathon culture in SA (focus heavily on Two Oceans 56km and Comrades 90km) is to blame. And that politics and bad admin are also culprits. Agreed on all three, but one must be cautious to criticize the ultra-culture, because ultimately, it’s still a running culture, and that will bring young athletes into the sport. The key is managing those athletes and the ultra-situation better. I think that Comrades and Oceans are the unfortunate "vehicle" for the greedy agents and coaches to exploit athletes. They are not directly to blame – in fact, as mentioned above, I’m
The Tour de France has come and gone, and the world's collective 'endurance-attention' now turns to athletics, whose showpiece, the World Championships, kick off on August 25th in Osaka, Japan. And here on the Science of Sport, that will be our focus for the best part of the next month. We're sure there'll be the usual diversion caused by doping in sport, be it remnants of the Tour or a new announcements in athletics, but we'll be sure to bring you the on-track science and off-track action of the IAAF World Champs. To kick off, this weekend sees arguably the strongest half-marathon field in history gathered in New York for the NYC Half Marathon. Haile Gebrselassie, serial world-record breaker at track and on the road (apart from the marathon, where he's been inconsistent, but still incredibly fast) takes on Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya, Abdi Abdirahman of the USA, and SA's Hendrik Ramaala over 21 km. It's a fascinating race because it brings together athletes from the two extr
