Cut loose by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, Prior received an offer from the Houston Astros on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle. "We've got an offer out to him at this point and time," Houston general manager Ed Wade told the newspaper. "I got a sense that we're in the relatively early stages. Yeah, we got on board with that one." According to the newspaper, Wade won't discuss the specifics of offers the Astros make. Scouts around baseball, however, think Prior will ink an incentive-laced, one-year deal before testing free agency again after the season. Someone tell me how to feel.

      Astros Acquire Closer Valverde
By Stephen RhodesThe Houston Astros got an upgrade at closer on Friday when they acquired closer Jose Valverde from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a four-player trade. The D-Backs received infielder Chris Burke and right-handed pitchers Juan Gutierrez and Chad Qualls in return. In Valverde's 5-year career, he is 9-14 with a 3.29 ERA and 98 saves in 253 games. Astros general manager Ed Wade told the Ticker, "In Jose Valverde, we're adding an All-Star closer and one of the best stoppers in the game. He led the majors in saves last year, and most of them came in tight, one-run situations for a team that was in the thick of a pennant race. He's a huge addition to our pitching staff." Burke hit .229 with 6 home runs and 28 RBI in 111 games with Houston last season. In his career, he has hit .249 with 20 home runs, 94 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 4 seasons with Houston. Gutierrez went 1-1 with a 5.91 ERA in only 7 games - 3 of them starts - for Houston last season. Qualls went 6-5 with

      Orioles' Tejada Traded to Astros
By Stephen RhodesThe Houston Astros made yet another big splash in hoping to improve their team; according to Juan A. Lozano of the Associated Press, shortstop Miguel Tejada was traded Wednesday from the Baltimore Orioles to the Astros for five players. The Orioles got in return outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton, Dennis Sarfate and third baseman Michael Costanzo. Houston general manager Ed Wade said the Astros couldn't pass up the chance to add Tejada, adding, "The reality is when you are talking about a player of this magnitude, you have to go in with every expectation that the asking price is going to be very high and if you want to participate, it's going to be tough." Apparently, Baltimore thought that Tejada, 31, had lost some range playing shortstop; they tried to without success covnert him into a third baseman. Wade said that they're not that concerned about Tejada's range. Ironically, Adam Everett, Houston's starting shortstop, will become an unr

TEJADA TRADED - Miguel Tejada Traded to the Astros For Six Players
From the Baltimore Sun: "Two years after he first suggested that he'd benefit from a change of scenery, Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada finally got his wish as he was traded to the Houston Astros today in president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail's boldest move to date.In return for the four-time All-Star, the Orioles will get outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate, and third baseman Michael Costanzo."***It will be sad to see him go; however, at the state the team was in, there was no point in him still remaining an Oriole. The team is definitely going to rebuild, and for the amount Tejada was being paid, you need to have some like that on a contending team, not taking up payroll. Some might have criticized Tejada for his fielding, sometimes sulky attitude, and for demanding a trade, but for the time he was in here in Baltimore, I'd say he produced with his bat and for the most part played with unbridled passion until as of late.Maybe this mo

After a few days quite days, there has been another "blockbuster trade":"The Baltimore Orioles traded shortstop Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros on Wednesday...[t]he blockbuster trade, first reported by The Baltimore Sun, sends five players to the Orioles -- outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate, and third-base prospect Michael Costanzo."The big name here is obviously Tejada. And once again we've got a gap between perception and reality. In 2004, when has 28, Tejada was a very dangerous hitter, with a .311/.360/.534 line. Since then, his numbers have been in a steady decline. The most disturbing trend (if you're Ed Wade) is his ISO (SLG-BA), a good measure of a hitter's power (horizontal axis is Tejada's age, blue line is league average):This isn't a new thing. Players peak in the late 20s, then begin to decline. The Astros now get to pay $26MM for two years of the decline phase of Tejada's career. Either they keep him at SS, where

Wednesday Game Thread; Cubs at Astros; 7:05 p.m. CT
For the first time since May 30, the Cubs have lost three consecutive games. Actually, they've lost five out of the last six. Yet somehow, they are only a game out of the division lead (probably soon to be .5 games for the time being, since once again the Rockies are beating the Brewers like a redheaded stepchild). So, while it may not be time to panic, it is certainly time to get back to winning ways. Unless Mark Grace heeded my call last night and brought some slumpbusters over to Houston, then the fate of turning things around lies on the arm (and perhaps bat) of Big Z. ¡Yo soy listo! Big Z, who overall is 14-7 with a 3.42 ERA, has won seven of his last nine starts, but didn't factor last time out because of dehydration and cramps. Hopefuuly he's got plenty of water and bananas in him tonight, because this game can really kickstart this team as it heads to Colorado. Dear Cubs, I really didn't want to say anything, but, since our leadoff hitter went down, I've noticed a distinct lack of . . . something  . . . on our team. At first I assumed it was hustle, then thought maybe it was that "cubbie swagger" we've all been hearing so much about, and, in my darkest moments, I even thought it might be heart. But I think I've figured something out. You guys have hustle (look at you, EPatt, almost legging out a sac bunt!), you have heart (you guys never stop trying, even when you're down by 18 in the top of the 3rd). I think what we are lacking these days is a little bit of self confidence. So go to the closest mirror (I'm assuming you're all in the Houston clubhouse right now, so we'll take turns. . . let's let the starters look first). Take a good long look at yourself. Aren't you handsome? Aren't you a big major-league baseball playing stud? Yes you are! Now repeat after me: How did that feel? Good, right? You guys don't need a $136 mi

Monday Game Thread; Cubs at Astros; 7:05 p.m. CT
Meet your newest Cub, Eric Patterson, who was called up after Soriano went down with his quad injury last night. Now, I know many have bad thoughts of a "Patterson" with pinstripes on, thanks to Eric's older brother, Corey, who was run out of town due to numerous boneheadeness. And that's understandable. But, that doesn't mean they'll be the same player. Sometimes, the older brother ends up being the better player, like with Cal and Billy Ripken. But, other times, it's a younger brother who comes out on top (ever hear of Vince DiMaggio? Exactly). So, to me, E-Patt gets a clean slate to start. In 111 games with Iowa, he's batting .299 with 14 HR, 62 RBI and 14 SB, also with a .360 OBP and .830 OPS. The bad news is 12 errors. Whether he plays in the infield or outfield, hopefully he can limit the defensive miscues. The Cubs begin a three-game set with Houston tonight in the clown park sponsored by Minute Maid. What If The Astros Drafted Derek Jeter??
What would have happened if the Astros drafted Derek Jeter as Hal Newhouser insisted?? I try to quantify what would, and could, have occurred. Those readers who are even vaguely interested in baseball history undoubtedly know Hal Newhouser. He was a back-to-back MVP as a pitcher during wartime in the 1940s, and is a Hall of Famer (of marginal merit in my view). You can click on the link for his Baseball-reference.com page. After his playing career, Newhouser became a scout, eventually for the Astros. In the lead up to the 1992 draft, Newhouser insisted that the Astros draft Jeter. Newhouser, in fact, apparently discovered Jeter. The Astros passed, drafting Phil Nevin instead. Newhouser was so incensed that he quit. Nevin played 18 games for the Astros, before being traded to the Tigers and having a creditable career. So, what would have happened to the Astros had they drafted Jeter?? Yankee fans will no doubt confirm one of Newhouser's key bits of scouting on Jeter; namely that he was
