Arsenal managed to stay at the top of the Premier League table after a nail-biting draw with Aston Villa which was settled in stoppage time by a late equalizer from Nicklas Bendtner. The Gunners have only taken two points from their last two games and are now only one point ahead of last season's Premier League Champions, Manchester United. An own goal from Philippe Senderos gave Aston Villa the lead after 27 minutes, and with Arsenal lacking a decisive touch in the final third it looked as though the Gunners would suffer their first defeat at the Emirates this season. However, young Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner showed some of the fighting spirit for which Arsenal has become renowned, denying Villa at the death with one of the last actions of the game.Lineups: Arsenal: Manuel Almunia; Ga

Whilst he was over in the UK to promote the premiere, and release, of "Charlie Wilson's War" (a comedy film where Tom plays Texan Congressman Charlie Wilson, secretly assisting rebels in Afghanistan in their war with the Soviets, which contributed to the collapse of Soviet Union, and then led to the rise of the Taliban and Islamic Radicalism), Tom recently said: "I'm big on Aston Villa because the name is just so sweet. Late Goals See United Thru (Aston Villa 0 - Manchester United 2)
This game was utterly uninspiring. For a good 80 odd minutes, nothing special really happened.Ronaldo and Saha were paired upfront forming an odd partnership that was doomed to failure. Saha seems to have aged 10 years since returning from injury. There is no pace in his movement and for large parts of the game seemed unable to keep up with the tempo of the game. Ronaldo, on the other hand, was a winger converted to a striker and it showed, especially with a partner who couldn't keep up with him.It didn't help matters that Carrick looked absolutely rubbish today. Whenever he touched the ball, the sting in attack just seems to fizzle. I know he's noted for his telling passes, but when he doesn't connect (which was probably all the time today), he looks very ordinary. It's hard to see how in

Aston Villa vs Arsenal - Preview - A tricky game tomorrow
Aston Villa have both comprehensively beaten Chelsea and been well beaten by Manchester United.  In both of these they burst out of the blocks and took an early lead.  In one they held off some pressure from their opposition and in the other they were pegged back soon after and eventually punished heavily.  Against Chelsea they were able to soak up the pressure and hit them on the counter late on to seal the points.  This was when Chelsea were not at their attacking best.  Against United they came up against a team in full attacking flow and Villa simply could not cope with the speed of the counter attack. This gives me some hope as in games this season - Sevilla apart - we have been able to break teams down and score goals.  Manchester United showed this is possible against Villa and hopefully we can do the same.  Going a goal down will not be the end of the world but if we get the first goal then it will be a real bonus.  If we

Alheio às notícias, Bosingwa voltou ontem a realizar treino integrado condicionado, o que na habitual linguagem oficial do FC Porto costuma significar derradeira etapa antes de ser dado como totalmente disponível para o trabalho. I'll make this one short since the Rugby World Cup finals is just around the corner. This was a convincing performance, and it was way before Villa were down to 9 men in the second half. Despite having Ronaldo on the bench, we started out strong and determined. But it was Villa who took a shock lead when Agbonlahor headed the ball into the net on the 13th minute. With Vidic out injured, Villa had their chances to test the defence marshalled by Rio and Pique, but they couldn't convert their chances. It was a different story on the other end of the pitch. Tevez, Nani, Scholes and Rooney combined to great effect, occasionally showing signs of tearing the Villa defence apart with their passing.Putting his midweek disappointment behind (England lost to Russia), Rooney helped himself to a couple of goals in the 35th and 44th minute when the Villa defence went to sleep. The first was a simple tap in when Rooney came from the blindside and stroked the ball into a wide open net. The entire Vill

Aston Villa - Harewood Signs For VillaAston Villa have beaten Wigan Athletic to the signature of West Ham United striker Marlon Harewood. The 27-year-old former Nottingham Forest forward has agreed a three-year deal at Villa Park for an undisclosed fee.The transfer is a coup for Villa boss Martin O'Neill because Harewood was on the verge of joining Wigan when Birmingham side made their move.O'Neill said: "Other teams wanted him but he's prepared to come here and challenge to try and work his way into the team."If he can recapture the form he showed in the two seasons before last, he will definitely be a big asset."West Ham boss Alan Curbishley had told Harewood he had become surplus to requirements at the Boleyn Ground.Villa's arch-rivals Birmingham City reportedly had a bid for Londoner Harewood rejected last month. He scored 56 goals in 178 games for the Hammers after joining them from Forest for £500,000 in November 2003. 16 of those goals came in 2005-06, West Ham's first seaso

Aston Villa to sign big 3?
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is reportedly hoping to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips, Jermain Defoe and Luke Young for a combined £25m.The club's multi-millionaire American owner Randy Lerner is willing to bankroll the former Leicester and Celtic chief's bid to get Villa battling it out for silverware and a European place next season. And the Sunday Mirror claims he will hand him the funds necessary to get the three main targets on board before the club jet out to the US for a pre-season tour.O'Neill is said to be ready to go back in for winger Wright-Phillips and reports claim he will make a £10million bid after the player was told he is free to move on if another club can match Chelsea's valuation. A similar offer could be made to Tottenham for striker Defoe, whose chances of first-team football at White Hart Lane look to have diminished after Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane signed new long-term contracts, while Darren Bent joined from Charlton in a £17million deal.Charlton r

Hello, sorry for the lack of posts recently but I've been on holiday for most of the last few weeks since the end of season. And here we are, only weeks away from the first game of the 2007/2008 attack on the premiership.Weve lost 7 players and only brought in 1 in Reo Coker - I think that Mr O'Neill is correct and Reo Coker will preove to be an excellent signing, however we need more.Aston Villa travel to USA and Canada in the next 2 weeks and I'm hoping that we can sign up at least 3 more players before the start of the season.Aston Villa Lottery syndicate http://www.VillaLotto.com or villalotto.blogspot.com

Aston Villa win away to Man City.
2 nil against Manchester City with goals coming from John Carew and Shaun Maloney. Another great win away (third in a row). Good Performances all over the pitch from the Aston Villa players and another 3 points in the bag.Im really looking forward to being down at Villa Park this Saturday for the last game for the season at home. I think the atmosphere should be pretty good, and hopefully we'll get a win against Sheffield United. I'm hoping that all the Villa fans lift the roof off and chear the lads on for the full 90 minutes. If we can get into the game from the kick off (not after 10-15 minutes as we have done in some games recently!) Villa should be up for another 3 points.we need a win at home. Aston Villa, 3 games to go in 2006/2007
Here we are, Aston Villa with 3 games to go in the 2006 / 2007 season. Manchester City (away), Sheffield United (home), Bolton (away) remain, and we are 11th in the league on 43 points.Things are not great at Aston Villa, but the future looks bright! Optimism and belief that the future will be better seems just enough to carry us through as fans right now. Is it enough? after a couple of seasons of porr results, are we really happy with where we are right now?Me? i say yes. Martin O'Neill and Randy Lerner are building an Aston Villa for the future. a 3 to 5 year plan that over time will no doubt develop into an ongoing business plan to carry us on for years.Martin O'Neill has worked hard with the team that he inherited from David O'Leary. Some have prospered and some have flagged a little but the team as a whole is better. The dressing room and the belief as a team is better than 12 month ago.3 games to go and all winnable. if we get 4 points i will be pleased. 9 and i will be over

      Aston Villa 0 - 0 Portsmouth
not a bad game and Villa had the best of the ball and all of the chances. Pompey played for the draw, and unfortunately we just could not get the goal.Gabby was amazing, and we played some good football, but portsmouth put everyone behind the ball and the 3 points avoided us. the game changed and our cutting edge was enhanced with the arrival of Yound, Moore, and Maloney - I only wish Martin O'neill had put them on earlier.with 10 minutes to go we looked like a different side with the pace and hunger of these 3. I quite wish we had played them from the start with the option to bring on the recovering Carew and Berger.Oh well, another draw and another point. a slightly empty Villa Park, and here we are again hoping that next season we will press on!!!!We'll see!!!! come on Villa.Aston Villa Lottery syndicate http://www.VillaLotto.com or villalotto.blogspot.com

It is a popular question in England these days when it comes to Premierleague action. And after the wrong steps made by Tot'ham, Bolton and Everton it is a clear chance for Portsmouth to progress in the table. Of course, if they manage not to repeat their previous 3 performances at Villa Park (they have lost all of them - 1:2, 0:3, 0:1).I am afraid another negative result for Pompy is coming having in mind the good form of Villa and the progress shown in their play. Aston Villa, get me the points...
In O'Learys first season at Aston Villa he emphasized the need to the players to get the points. David O'Leary wouldnt consider anything else until the players had gone out there and got at least 40 points, and virtual safety from the drop. Angel went on to have a hell of a season, and Villa went on to push for Europe. We started to believe again, and honestly thought we could win any game. Now obviousl, it didn't last. we followed this up with a poor season and then a much worse season last year reaching an all time low.Martin O'Neill has been on a similar push recently. O'Neill has been working hard with the players on a team and individual basis off the pitch while encouraging them to get the points on the pitch. It seems to be working. we've took 7 points from the last 9, and are unbeaten in 5 games.at this time of the year since Christmas we seem to respond well to the need for points. whether moving away from the drop or pushing for the top - we all know what points make!Wha

      Aston Villa 1-1 Wigan
Wigan went ahead with a Emile Heskey goal, and Villa could possibly have expected to have come away with more when Wigan went down to 10 men when Antonio Valencia was sent off due to that tackle on Wilfred Bouma.Villa enjoyed the majority of the possession and laid on the pressure, but Wigan defended well and the goals didnt come. Early in the second half Gabby Agbonlahor scored again for Aston Villa, but no lead was gained by the home side. When any team is ahead and loses a player, they are bound to sit back and defend. Villa just dont seem to have that depth and quality of side right now to penetrate during this kind of situation.Maybe if we are lucky and Randy Lerner & Martin O'Neill can attract the right players during the summer then next season will be a different story. guts and character. that's how Martin O'Neill put it.After Blackburn went ahead, an equaliser from Patrik Berger and then the winning goal from Gabriel Agbonlahor secured the 3 points for Villa. Martin O'Neill said "today we came from behind. never gave up and went onto a deserved victory in the end."Now we go into another big game at home to Wigan on Monday and another three points would move us a lot closer to safety."with no John carew and with Patrik Berger in the side, we come away with an away win and 3 needed points.Berger must surely deserve a new contract now? he has been excellent in recent weeks and the team is better for having him in it.Aston Villa are in 13th spot with 38 points.Aston Villa Lottery syndicate http://www.VillaLotto.com or villalotto.blogspot.com

Aston Villa seemed a little hard to get into their stride as the game started; maybe nerves, or maybe just such desire and need to gain much needed points were the issue.Unfortunately for Villa, Joleon Lescott scored in the 15th minute to put Everton ahead. Chances in either direction followed but no follow up goal for Everton or come back from Villa.Aston Villa applied plenty of pressure in the second half and finally got the equaliser in the 83rd minute. Gabriel Agbonlahor scoring after another Carew effort had been blocked. The final whistle blew with both teams 1 more point towards their respective goals. Everton Pushing for Europe, Aston Villa playing for survival.I was impressed to see a spirited second half from Villa, and a good dose of heart from the team. I think that both managers believed that Aston Villa and Liverpool could have played better, And Liverpool are bound to be rather disappointed with a draw after Arsenal came to Villa park only wednesday and took all 3 points. It just so happens that my best mate is a bluenose! That’s right a supporter of Birmingham City Football Club. I can hardly believe it myself sometimes, but hey, we’ve been good mates since we were teenagers. I was Best Man at his wedding and I’m god father to his daughter. He at the same time was an usher at my wedding and is god father to my son. So I guess you can see that we’re pretty good mates. We were stood in the pub last week watching the Liverpool v Barcelona game and there was plenty of banter and general football chat going around. As the end of season starts to loom we got onto the “going up” or “going down” conversation. As things are looking, it is very likely that the Premiership will have a couple more clubs from the midlands in the mix next season. No matter who comes up, I do think this is a good thing for the premier league and a good thing for the midlands.Anyway, my mate the bluenose, turned to me and suggested that Martin O’Neill (as well as all A

It's been a good weekend for sport and due to the luck of quite a bit of time at home right now i was able to catch a number of games on TV during Saturday and Sunday.Manchester United & Middlesbrough drew 2-2, and Chelsea & Spurs drew 3-3. Being a Villa Supporter I really didn't care which of these teams (if any) won or lost, but i did enjoy watching the games very much (especially the game between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur).last week it was the Champions League games, and again, I loved watching the TV. Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United are through, Arsenal are out.it's been such a good week for sport and for football (soccer for those who don't know how to spell it right!)Probably due to our crazy 3 week break that we've endured recently, but I have wondered when Aston Villa will again be involed in such matches.
