Why is aspirin so dangerous to cats?
by: Julia - Cat WorldAspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is one of the most well known and popular over the counter drugs available. It is easy to assume that it is safe for cats, but this is definitely not the case.Unlike humans, cats do not metabolise aspirin very slowly. It is extremely easy to give a cat a fatal overdose in as little as a single tablet. The biological half-life of aspirin is 37.5 hours in cats, meaning that it takes 3 days to remove half of the drug from the body. Aspirin toxcity occurs when a guardian intentionally gives the cat a high dosage of aspirin, gives aspirin over a prolonged period, or accidentally gives a product containing aspirin.Aspirin toxicity can lead to kidney and liver damage.Symptoms of aspirin poisoning?DepressionHyperexcitabilityLoss of balanceVomitin

      ASPIRIN MAY REDUCE PARKINSON’S RISK
Study finds NSAIDS may have a protective effectLike Cox-2 inhibitors, over-the-counter pain medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have become suspects in increasing risks of heart attacks and strokes. But researchers now think NSAIDs may have a beneficial effect too, reducing a person’s risk of Parkinson’s disease. The findings are in a study published in the November 6, 2007, issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.“Given our results and the growing burden of Parkinson’s disease as people age, there’s a pressing need for further studies explaining why these drugs may play a protective role,” said study author Angelika D. Wahner, PhD, with the UCLA School of Public Health in Los Angeles.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/11/nsaids_parkinsons.html~Sandy G.

Does enteric-coated aspirin result in a lower incidence of gastrointestinal complications compared to normal aspirin?
Does enteric coating actually reduce the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in patienst who take aspirin?"Five randomised controlled trials of healthy volunteers undergoing endoscopy after a period of either enteric-coated aspirin or plain aspirin administration all demonstrated a clear reduction of gastric mucosal injury. However, these trials on healthy volunteers taking short-term aspirin have not been supported by clinical studies in older age-group adults taking lower doses of aspirin for long periods. No clinical benefits in terms of reduction of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration with enteric coating have, therefore, been successfully demonstrated, although the endoscopic studies show that potentially these benefits could exist."Walker J, Robinson J, Stewart J, Jacob S. 10 Tips To Know About Aspirin
      1. Aspirins deaden pain and so bring relief, but by taking them indiscriminately, there is a possible risk that more serious medical symptoms will go unnoticed as the pain dies down.2. Aspirins are not a cure. They are pain killers, and should be treated as such. •3. If you have any persistent ache or pain, you should seek medical advice to find the cause, rather than dose yourself with aspirins. Doctors agree that aspirins are invaluable for the relief of headaches, menstruation pains and cold symptoms. Without aspirins, they say, their monday morning surgeries would be even more packed with patients. The only provisions is that they urge caution when taking them.4. Some elderly people take aspirins night and morning habitually — which could be dangerous unless done under medical supervision. This is because aspirin is acetyl-salicylic acid, which can irritate the lining of the stomach and cause slight internal bleeding. That does not mean that every time you take an aspiri

      Homemade Aspirin Mask
Hey dolls, hope you are diligent about sloughing off the dead skin cells on your face regularly and getting it all smooth and glowy for the summer! You know I'm a big fan of exfoliation, I like to keep my pores clean and unclogged. Especially now it's hot, the oil glands are working overtime. We sweat more and we wear sunscreen all the time (some can really clog the pores). A friend of mine recently passed me a great homemade exfoliation recipe. Let me just say -- it works wonders!! I will actually say it is more effective than a lot of Beta Hydroxy products on the market. You must try this, especially if you want to get rid of some blemishes and those over-the-counter anti-acne creams haven't worked for you. 1. Get 6-10 plain uncoated aspirins. No need to get expensive ones. The cheap no name brand at Walmart works just as well. Dissolve them in hot water, just a few drops. Mash them with a spoon. 2. Add a half teaspoon of the following to give it better body and stick

Why Ibuprofen and Aspirin are a Deadly Combo
The common painkiller ibuprofen could boost the likelihood of heart problems in high-risk patients with osteoarthritis.Researchers examined the cardiovascular health of more than 18,000 osteoarthritis patients over the age of 50.The patients were taking part in the Therapeutic Arthritis Research and Gastrointestinal Event Trial (TARGET), and were either taking a high dose of lumiracoxib, a COX-2 inhibitor, ibuprofen, or naproxen.Patients whose risk of cardiovascular disease was deemed low during the study remained that regardless of their drug regimen. But 10 percent were considered to be at high risk of a heart attack or stroke; some of these patients were taking low-dose aspirin for this problem. When these high-risk patients were taking both aspirin and ibuprofen, they were nine times as likely to have heart attacks and strokes over the course of a year as those on lumiracoxib. Previous studies have suggested that ibuprofen interferes with the effects of aspirin.

      Caution for Aspirin Users
Not to deviate much from the sports/orthopaedic focus of this blog, but I came across another article on the caution for patients taking Aspirin. We posted last week on the American Heart Association's new guidelines which encourages physicians to limit drug therapy for pain, especially NSAIDs. Today there was a new report that people at average risk for colon cancer should not take aspirin or ibuprofen and similar painkillers to try to prevent the disease because of the risk of developing bleeding and other problems. Just something else to think about regarding patient care in states with direct access to physical therapy services.Washington PostTuesday, March 6, 2007; Page A08Aspirin Taken as Cancer Preventative Has Risks Save This Page
