Hot Chip’s Music may be Made In The Dark—But was the album artwork?
I’m used to hearing a new Hot Chip track—and then at some point discovering the album artwork which represents it. These CD covers, such as Hot Chip’s The Warning, Colours and Over and Over are both bright and colorful. These covers are what I’m used to seeing—and what I imagine their work would look like [...]

Why Album Artwork no longer has Backbone!
I can remember the last couple of albums that I designed, where one place where accuracy is paramount is placing text and logos in the CD spine. You literally have less than 1cm to squeeze all the elements into this thin strip of CD ‘real estate’—the dreaded spine of the album’s artwork. As any good designer [...]

CD Sleeves to be replaced by iTunes Album Artwork?
As a graphic designer for CD Sleeves, I’m very interested in the latest development in this apparently new ‘iTunes naming convention’ - Album Artwork. Obviously, as time progresses, and now in 2008, 80% of all albums are downloaded through online retailers, so are no longer physical ‘CDs’. Back in the day, a collection of music was [...]

The Future of iTunes: Album Artwork Banned by Steve Jobs!
I few months ago, I wrote a post about how Brit-band Hard-Fi were opposed to Album Artwork on their new release. If this wasn’t enough, I recently heard that at least one band is now doing a similar thing (I can’t seem to find out how, if you have any information, please leave a comment). [...]

      Artwork on Slate
We do not make slate signs anymore - we just cannot keep up with the work and the HDU house signs are so popular. The only thing we will do with slate if someone really wants, is artwork.  We did this for a company we know in Germany called Sannerz Designs. You take a picture (in this [...]

Collage garden with handmade paper beads contemporary artwork
A collage using marbled paper, linen, handmade paper beads, scrapbook paper, rice paste and buttonhole twist thread. 8x10" on fluted black matboard.Although I did some planning before gluing, some of this is done on the fly, spontaneously. Every element affects every other element, moving one piece or changing size or shape seems to require adjustments in other areas and I really wanted to utilize the design on the beautiful gold metallic marbled paper as well. Sky, clouds, rocks, and a stream are represented by the background paper, so it's a very important design element.collage is really interesting artwork to create, I am having a great time with these! Thanks for looking at my work! 1 Hour Artwork - Leopard Eyes
"Leopard Eyes"Completed: 1.17.08crayon on paperI really enjoyed drawing the tiger I did awhile back, so I figured I would try a couple more animal eyes. This one I did with crayon instead of oil pastel, and it took about 40 minutes. I think I like the tiger one better, because I tend to lean towards bright colors more. I think I may end up doing a bigger collection of these...I just have to get some pictures of my own. Maybe in the spring time I need to take a trip to the zoo.....Shannon

1 Hour Artwork - Break Time
"Break Time"Completed: 1.7.08chalk pastel on paperI completed this sketch while my boyfriend was in class. I sat in a lobby with a couple of chairs, and this desk that had an interesting design in the middle. I drew it in pencil first and almost didn't want to use chalk pastels, because sometimes I mess things up when I add color. I figured it's just in my sketch book, so I went ahead and used them. It was definitely a learning experience using them in such small, detailed sections. Hopefully I will have some posts soon about the current collection I am working on. (Hint - I love pictures of outer space...)Shannon

1 Hour Artwork - Morning Colors
"Morning Colors"Completed: 1.8.08chalk pastel on paperI sketched this one out in about half an hour during my lunch break at one of my jobs. I saw the sunrise one morning and these colors were in the sky. So, the next day I used the colors in this sketch and made up the clouds. (This morning I took a couple of pictures of the sunrise so I could do some actual sky and cloud studies). More tomorrow!Shannon

1 Hour Artwork - Sign of Spring
"Sign of Spring"Completed: 1.3.08ballpoint pan on paper Believe it or not, this sketch started with those little circles in the upper righthand corner. I really didn't know what would happen. As I turned some of the circles into stars, then created the moon, it reminded me of a clear, winter night. I added the designs on the sides, to act as sharp edges of ice and the blowing winds when it is cold. (We had one of those days yesterday!) I ended with the bare, jagged tree, with a little flower - a sign of spring. Shannon
