      In Memoriam - Arthur Kroeger
I was given the news by a friend late last night that Arthur Kroeger has passed away in Ottawa at the age of 75.For those who don't know of Arthur Kroeger, he was considered by many of those who work and study in the field of Canadian public administration to be the "Dean of Deputy Ministers" and one of the exemplary public servants to come from the "golden age" of the Canadian civil service in the 1950s & 60s.A much younger generation of those interested in Canadian public administration (myself included) got to know Arthur Kroeger when he went by a different title - Chancellor. Not only was he the Chancellor of Carleton University from 1993 until 2002 but he was also instrumental in setting up the first undergraduate program in Canada specifically dedicated to training the next gener

It is 7 weeks from Passover. Shavuot is derived from the Hebrew for 'seven.'   The sages teach that Sinai was chosen because it belonged to no nation so that the teachings in the Torah could belong to all humankind. The whole of Torah has been distilled to: "What is distasteful to you, do not do to your fellow."   As a rabbi, I am often consulted with situations involving human conflict. Genesis 37:14 asks us to: "look into the wholeness" of your fellows. We are not to look at their defects.   It is human nature to

It is frankly what Jewish Spiritual Renewal  brings us to. It is part of developing a personal relationship with Ha Shem.   It is a question which I was planning to delve into much later in the class.   But let me touch on some salient points today.   As Jews we are a 'listening' people. The watch words of our faith are in the Shema, "Hear, O' Israel". When we all stood at Mt. Sinai listening to the Ten Utterances (Commandments) , we said ,"We will do, and we will listen." It started at dawn today. And it ends at sundown of the day of 13th. Of course, we understand, that when sundown comes on the 13th, the 14th of Adar begins, and hence Purim begins.   The Fast of

March 19 - Arthur C Clarke, the writer best known for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, has died at the age of 90. He passed away in his home in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo because of cardio-respiratory problems, a statement said. He had been wheelchair-bound because of post polio syndrome for the last 20 years of his life.Clarke celebrated his 90th birthday in December, when he said he wanted to be remembered as a writer "who entertained readers and hopefully stretched their imaginations as well".The plot for 2001: A Space Odyssey, which takes readers from the dawn of man to the rebirth of an astronaut as a star child in the future, certainly reflected that goal. His story was turned into an enormously successful 1968 Stanley Kubrick film of the same title and publicised his work to m

His most famous science fiction novel, thanks in part to Stanley Kubrick, is probably 2001: A Space Odyssey, though I will always remember him best for Childhood's End, a powerful and intriguing work, made more intriguing by the notice in the front of early editions warning readers that the opinions of the novel are not those of the author.Clarke is well-known for incorporating religious themes into his stories. His use of religion in fiction is most notable for its nuance, sophistication, and originality. In particular, his story "The Star," which depicts a Jesuit scienti

Science fiction writer and a visionary, Sir Arthur C Clarke has passed away at the age of 90 in Sri Lanka.Sir Arthur C. Clarke was a gentleman and a teacher and an avid diver. I had the pleasure of working with him a while ago and learned a lot from him, of all things, about diving!.On the communications front, he envisioned, during the second world war, in a paper he published that, at 22,000 miles above the Earth’s surface, communications satellites would sit in geo-stationary orbit, allowing electronic signals to be bounced off them around the globe and that only three of them needed to cover the globe. His prediction soon came to be true as soon as the first satellite began to orbit the earth. But he was mostly known for his creation, with the legendary film director Stanley Kubrick,

Arthur C Clarke dead at 90: Rest in Peace
Arthur C Clarke, the science-fiction author, has died at 90. One of my favourite Sci-Fi authors - I liked his work because he never lost the human dimension. Clarke's books were about fallible human beings learning to adapt to changed circumstances created by logic and his imagination. For me, that was always deeper than the approach taken by other authors trying to imagine technology developing far enough to become proto-human. Others will comment on his other achievements - such as the invention of geostationary satellites, and the scope of his contacts and writing. I'll leave it there. Another writer who was formative for me gone. Tags: arthur c clarke, 1999 a space odyssey, obituary more

Farewell to another hero of mine with the demise of Arthur C. Clarke earlier today. I have fond memories of Arthur, mainly from the ITV series 'Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World', and of course from the parody done by the Goodies in the episode 'Big Foot'. Arthur's work was prescient, and he well understood the symbiotic relationship between Science Fiction, and that of Science, Technology, and Innovation: I'm sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne and the people who write about this and made people think about it. I'm rather proud of the fact that I know several astronauts who became astronauts through reading my books. RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL : TALMUDIC DISCOURSE: PASSOVER, EXODUS, MOSES' SPIRITUAL AWAKENING    Shalom Talmudim:   It has been posited that the whole of Genesis is to lead our people to commit the sin against their brother Joseph, to eventually get the clan of Israel, into Egypt, and into slavery. This slavery would eventually have them yearn for liberation and acceptance of Torah.   Hence Moses, a Levite son of the Israelite clan, with an Egyptian name, grew up in the house of Pharaoh, as a prince of Egypt. The Torah has to have him have an national  awakening and identify with his people. Hence the verses of Exodus 2:11-15, has Moses refer to his fellow Israelites as ''brethren'' twice, and for the first time Moses actually sees their burdens and suffering.
