For those of you who dig The National, Rufus Wainwright and Beirut, keep your ears open for Emanuel and the Fear. This Brooklyn-based, ten-piece band consists of orchestra members that have played and performed with the likes of Spoon, Mars Volta, and Sufjan too. All together they've produced a sound that can't be entirely described in one word because it's a grand fusion of horns, pop piano, lulling vocals, violin strains and hand claps. Good news for those of you who are expecting your Economic Stimulus Check to be direct deposited. Because of the system updating daily, people will begin receiving their direct deposits starting this Monday as opposed to 5/2/08. 800,000 people will receive direct deposits on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Five million will receive the direct deposit on Friday! Click here for the full story. I'm a little bummed. Mine won't arrive until July. We owed money and therefore didn't put our direct deposit information down, since we filed in February before they implemented the stimulus plan. Oh well, I'm sure whenever it comes it will be a much needed boost for whatever credit card I am paying off that month!

Like most of Europe, the best way to get out of the airport and into the city is via public transportation. Amsterdam’s public transportation system is quick and relatively cheap. The railway system has a direct line that connects Amsterdam’s Schiphol International Airport to Centraal Station. Tickets can be purchased in the airport at kiosk machines. Be warned, however, the most kiosk machines only accept debit cards (e.g. Dutch Postbank). The train trip takes approx. 20 minutes and there are a couple of stops in between Schiphol and Centraal Station (not with every train, 3 max). The single fare is 3.60 Euro (correct Dec 06), if you have the correct change in coins or the right debit card you can buy the ticket from a machine at the airport and avoid the big ticketdesk queues. The Smart Car only measures 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. Its still gas powered, but won't waste too much gas at 42 miles per gallon. The tiny car has a top speed of 90 mph. Not bad for a car you would think is as fast as a moped.
Eve the crash ratings are good, if you could imagine. It gets a 4 star crash rating. The smart car will be available in 3 models for about $11,000 to $17,000. Will there be a market beyond American cities for this cute car? I think Americans can go as little as a Honda Civic, but this size I have my doubts…

It sure is different than anything else that I’ve experienced before but if you’re like me and only seen North America & Western Europe it’s quite understandable that you’ll be in for a surprise. At around 16 million inhabitant in the day time and countless undocumented residents Manila is the biggest city of South-East Asia and actually ranks 19 one the list of the world’s most populous metropolitan areas. State by state Im getting closer. Each one is feeling like a big milestone lately and Ive been moving a lot faster the last few states than I have in others. I made it to West Orange, just a 30-minute train ride into New York City. Originally I wasnt planning on making another trip back to NYC unless I had a big reason. But, if Im this close and my best buddy is only a short rain ride away, you bet Im going to go. Though I arrived in New Jersey last night I will spend the weekend in NYC before coming back to spend a few more days in New Jersey.
Im staying with Jeanne and Kevin here in West Orange. Jeanne is the cousin of my good friend Jen H. (shes the one that leaves all the witty comments from Chicago and the UK). They both went to DePaul University to study theatre, now for over a decade they have lived in the greater New York City area.
Jen nominated Jeanne to be a host over a year ago! I called right away and remember Jeanne saying that they dont make
