      One argument against Microfinance

Bateman starts by discussing the growing microfinance por

      Different body parts having argument
One day the different parts of the body were having an argument to see which should be in charge:The brain said, "I do all the thinking so I'm the most important and I should be in charge.”The eyes said, "I see everything and let the rest of you know where we are, so I'm the most important and I should be in charge.”The hands said, "Without me we wouldn't be able to pick anything up or move anything. So I'm the most important and I should be in charge.”The stomach said, "I turn the food we eat into energy for the rest of you. Without me, we'd starve. So I'm the most important and I should be in charge.”The legs said, "Without me we wouldn't be able to move anywhere. So I'm the most important and I should be in charge.”Then the rectum said, "I think I should be in charge.”All the rest of the parts said, "YOU?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't do anything! You're not as important as we surely are! You can't be in charge.”So the rectum clos

An Argument for Keeping Mark Prior
No matter how you feel about Prior emotionally (and personally I've felt the gamut of emotions from elation to despair, from pity to rage towards the guy) there are really only four potential outcomes for this thing. (Albeit, each of those outcomes comes with numerous degrees of shading.) I'll rank them from worst to best for the Cubs, but again, that's subjective, and some probably overlap. 1) Prior goes somewhere else and fulfills that tarnished "potential" we remember so bitterly. The worst option, as I see it, is that he becomes a true, dominant number 1 starter. For another team. Fallout from that would be an indictment of the Cubs' manager, the pitching coach, the trainers, the Minor League rehab facility . . . AND THEN all of the Cubs'  baseball people for letting him get away just when they should have kept him. The Cubs would look like the team who broke him, couldn't fix him, and then gave up on him too early. Three strikes. We lose. 2) Prior goes somewhere

Argument set to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony
DBB.org regular contributor Benjy sent me a link to this very fun video featuring Sid Caesar and Nanette Fabray pantomiming an argument with the first movement of Beethoven’s 5th symphony as a soundtrack.  Sid Ceaser was a live sketch comedy pioneer in the 1950s with his sitcoms Your Show of Shows and Ceaser’s Hour.  Check out more contributions from Benjy on the DBB.org articles page–we wrote a great article about auditioning for the Strasbourg Philharmonic at age 54 after being a member of this orchestra for the past 22 years.

      An Argument for Pragmatism
The only way democracy or civil society can take root in Iraq, devastated by military, sectarian and political strife, is for the United States to withdraw its military presence. But more than that, we need to rethink the effectiveness of our actions in this region, and against the militant Salafi movement in particular. This does not mean the most responsible decision is to remove American forces immediately, but we must ultimately face the reality that our presence only puts a target on our backs—in...(read more)

The bottom-up economic argument for FTTH
The New Zealand Institute published an interesting document supportive of FTTH. The economic benefits are calculated bottom-up and are (conservatively) estimated at 2.7-4.4bn NZD/year. Their next report will focus on the cost of covering 75% of the population by 2018. (All fine and dandy, but I was reminded of a recent Greenspan quote: "It is not yet settled, although I guess it should be by now

      Dialogue, Discussion or Argument?
"Argument is the worst sort of conversation." -Jonathan Swift, Irish Cleric and Writer, Jonathan Swift books// A mentor once explained to me that dialogue was the best kind of conversation because it involved collaboration and a sharing of ideas, regardless of agreement. He also said that discussion was a conversation consisting of points and counterpoints, which inherently made it somewhat adversarial. Arguments, he said, were nothing more than a waste of time. I wonder if my mentor read much of Swift's work? I tend to agree with them both. To read the rest of this post, please click the headline and go to the Thoughts On Quotes site.

The Argument Continues (with some tips thrown in)
First, because this whole thing about WordPress and Blogger might annoy the crap out of you, or bore you, I'm going to give away some interesting links and information.First is the TW Blog. I've become a weekly contributor there, partly because I've become a mod at the TeenageWriters site and partly because I'm editing their first anthology. I do the writing tips/discussion type stuff. Two posts of interest to anyone that reads this blog would be The Golden Rule and Enemy #1: Info-dump. The former is about none other than that infamous "show, don't tell" rule and the latter is quite obvious I think. Check them out because I think they are rather helpful, and perhaps if you have any comments I'd love to hear them.Another thing of interest is that I have volunteered and been accepted to help do book reviews with SQT at her F & SF Review Blog. She's becoming very active in the SF/F community and trying to get her foot in the review door by asking for ARC's and the like.

Using the Doomsday Argument to Predict The Future Lifespan of the Major Leagues
There is a famous conjecture called the Doomsday Argument, which will be discussed below. It can be used to predict the future remaining existence of the Major Leagues. Here's how. Before reading, come up with an off the cuff estimate for how long you think Major League Baseball will last. Think of it in terms of if you were betting, and you wanted to know how many years it had left, so that

Reasoned discussion or argument, dialogue or emotion?
In Massachusetts, some homosexual activists have a truly distorted idea of what constitutes authentic dialogue: http://www.massresistance.org/docs/info/know_thy_neighbor.html"A discussion is an orderly confrontation based on a mutual willingness to learn from one another. It involves the presentation of evidence by each party and then a good-faith attempt of the participants in the discussion to come to agreement. Discussion presupposes some degree of rational disagreement between us or at least a lack of consensus. If I agreed with you already, we would have nothing to discuss. In a discussion, I do not primarily want to disagree: I want to know the truth. If I do not think that what you say is true, then I disagree, stating my reasons as clearly as possible and without animosity. The same is true for you: you present me with your reasons. By sharing our ideas freely, we hope to arrive at a deeper truth. In a discussion, disagreement is for the sake of agreement.....An argument (emoti

An Argument For Action On Global Warming
These days, everyone seems to agree the planet is warming up. What we don’t agree on are the reasons why: human caused or natural? Personally, I figured the resounding consensus among the world’s scientists fingering humanity as the cause was reason enough, but what do I know? Anyway, the short video above aims to silence this largely irrelevant debate in favour of the more pressing issue: what are the consequences if we choose a course of action…and we’re wrong?

To this argument it can be justly answered, first, that the question

A New Argument against the Death Penalty
I am opposed to capital punishment. That is not to say I don’t think strong arguments can be made in its favour, on the contrary, I think it is a very difficult dilemma to decide, and by no means clear cut. Personally, I find the idea of an innocent man being executed in error so repugnant, that for most cases, I just don’t think it is worth the risk. There may be some cases where we can be almost completely certain that we have the guilty person, but I still oppose the state’s right to take his life. We are not simply protecting the public by executing him, as we would by destroying a dangerous, rabid dog. By executing, we effectively ‘give up’ on that person. As a humanist, believing that nobody is absolutely evil, I find that hard to do. Even a convicted murderer can contribute something to society, if he can be rehabilitated. I know what you’re thinking: that’s a big ‘if’. Indeed it is. It is not my intention to argue that all criminals can, at least in

Tom Tancredo scores again with winning argument
The blog of Illegal Immigration News in Chapel Hill presents Sen. Tom Tancredo's newsletter in which he makes an important point regarding the case of the terrorists who were plotting to attack Fort Dix. As he says here:Incredibly, even as the illegal aliens who were plotting to kill American soldiers at Fort Dix are now sitting in jail, the President and key members of Congress are preparing to launch another “comprehensive immigration reform” bill….a bill that would give AMNESTY to illegal immigrants, like the ones arrested last week in New Jersey! This is an outrage! It is an insult to the memory of the Americans who died at the hands of illegal aliens in 2001, it is an insult to our servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is an insult to the millions of immigrants who come to our nation legally, and it proves the political establishment in Washington is NOT SERIOUS when it comes to fixing our broken immigration laws and securing our nation!Absolutely correct.
