The goal of this series of posts is fairly simple, I am going to write a post about all of the Arctic Monkeys B-Sides, Non-Album Tracks, and other rarities. "When The Sun Goes Down" (aka Scummy Man) gets credit as one of the Arctic's signature songs. Of course, after "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" got annoying, non-fans jump on "Scummy Man" as if on autopilot. With good reason too, Scummy is the only true three-dimensional song on Whatever... and illustrates prolific storytelling swamped between extraordinary meat'n'potatoes guitars. For saying that they started off their career by calling us all vampires, its quite surprising how united we, in the music press, are in our adulation of the Arctic Monkeys. In the wake of Favourite Worst Nightmare's widespread critical acclaim, music journos the length and breath of the country are united under the alt-indie simians' banner, and 'Teddy Picker' is the third single from the said album in line to be lavished with unmitigated praise.
'Teddy Picker', is a typical Monkeys' affair; a bright, riff-driven pop treat, laced with lyrics that are as clever as they are cynical. But the main, nay crucial, thing that sets the track apart is the newfound confidence it demonstrates. Sheesh, peoples! This has been one rough tummy bug. I can't seem to shake it. I had a near breakdown a couple of days ago.
Not kidding.
The worst part of it is, I have been running a low-grade fever and I wake up in the night freezing like it's the Arctic in my room. So, I get up and waddle like a penguin into the kitchen to take some Tylenol. I finally drift back off to sleep, only to wake up like it's a barren desert in my room. Well, Monday morning, I woke up after a night of extreme colds and hots and I really wasn't feeling too swell. But...I had to do my chicken house work, because a farm never stops, y'all. The Canadian Forces mounted four operations in the Arctic this year, one more than in 2006, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently promised to build a deep-sea port and military training centre to bolster Canada's claim over the region. Russia recently made its own move to assert its sovereignty over the top of the world by placing a flag beneath the North Pole. The federal government has carefully documented its stepped-up Arctic presence with official photographs on the National Defence website showing soldiers firing ammunition rounds.
Wow, having to endure all those imperious lectures from former US Ambassador Paul Cellucci is finally paying a dividend: he is saying that the Northwest Passage should be part of Canada.
“That would enable the Canadian navy to intercept and board vessels in the Northwest Passage to make sure they’re not trying to bring weapons of mass destruction into North America,” Cellucci told CTV’s Question Period yesterday. “My hope is that the United States will take a second look at our long-standing position.”
It’s not the first time Cellucci has made the pitch. He spoke out on the subject on a trip to the North in 2004 and reiterated his views last year.
Cellucci is a long-time friend of US President Bush.

An international scramble for the Arctic's oil and gas resources accelerated yesterday when Canada responded to Russia's recent sovereignty claims with a plan to build two military bases in the region.

In June we learned that Russia wanted to make claim to the North Pole, this angered many countries but this has not stopped Russia and have now sent a submarine which plans to plant a flag under the North Pole. This is part of the Kremlin’s efforts to lay claim to the arctic which has a massive amount of energy resources.
Arctic explorer Artur Chilingarov, is the veteran explorer who is to descend 14,000 feet into the depths of the sea, and will then drop a Russian tricolor which has been cast in titanium onto the seabed.
Russia has many rivals all have all been eager to grab a piece of the Arctic as it is rich in oil resources, in fact it is thought that the North Pole has at least a quarter of the worlds energy resources which is untapped.
It is believed that there is at least 10 billion barrels of oil at the North Pole.

The impact of global warming on the environment may still be debateable in the minds of some, but there is no doubting the impact of Al Gore on the immediate filmmaking landscape. After the Arctic Monkeys’ 2006 over-hyped, over-blogged, over-publicized, over-the-top sucess with their triumphant debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, the lads got back in the studio to manufacture the extremely critized flop, Leave Before The Lights Come On, which was seen as an act of sell-outship. The witty damn-I-shouldn’t ‘ave-fucked-her lyrics shamed against the sure-fire signiture Arctic Monkeyness they seem do with their instruments, seems to pack as must action as any title track from Whatever…, proving that Alex Turner’s songcraft was unaffected by this hyped-blogged-publized-over-the-top-ness that seemed to surround the Arctics.
