These are outlined briefly below: - The aquarist selection of fish. - The removal and packing of the fish from the pet shop - Transport time and period and the handling of the fish in transit - Quarantine procedure. - Adjustment and adaptation into the new community or environment by the new fish. When buying fish from the pet shop always spend some time at the place to inquire about the life history and habits of the new purchase. Aquarium vorderingen

Water treatments in fish and aquarium care
How to condition water Fish of all sorts expect a pH measurement of acid and/or base water. The common pH level is typically 6.5 and no higher than 7.5. Water types include saltwater, alkalinity, hardness, soft water, and so on. Alkalinity water is measured buffers, which its capacity is based on test results conducted from water. Alkalinity is a choice for many fish, since it will regulate pH balance, thus preventing the balance to drop. With this in mind, you can add buffers to regulate alkalinity as well. Hard water is based on the amount of minerals, which is often unregulated. The reason is that soft water lacks the ability to produce dissolved minerals, while water softened by machines does not supply a variety of minerals. For this purpose, most aquarium and fish owners will purc

      Caring for an Aquarium
Before you even decide for certain that you want a saltwater aquarium in your living room, you need a clear understanding of the time, effort, and expense involved in maintaining it properly. Although emphasizes design over technique, once the design is executed, maintenance becomes all-important. Coral reefs shelter their diverse inhabitants in one of the most stable environments on Earth. In fact, environmental stability may well explain a substantial portion of that diversity. When you can count on tomorrow being pretty much like today for thousands of years at a stretch, adaptations necessary for coping with, or preparing for, environmental change can be redirected into specialization of lifestyle. In turn, most coral reef organisms have, as a result of that specialization, sacrificed

The aquarium in this context becomes a living work of art, complementing the interior décor of the home. It makes a statement about the owner’s lifestyle, forges a connection to nature that is often absent from urban life, and, sometimes, boasts of success. Residences these days may be graced by installations of a size and level of sophistication that in years past were only found in museums and public aquariums. Will You Need A Fish Tank Stand For Your Aquarium?
One of the important steps in setting up your new aquarium is selecting the correct fish tank stand. The stand not only has to adequately support the tank itself, it can also serve a wider variety of needs. You certainly do not want to place your new fish tank on a flimsy bookcase or even a table. Fish tank stands are designed and constructed to hold the immense amount of weight to which they are subjected. Many beginner aquarists do not realize that a gallon of water weighs about 10 pounds. A small fish tank with 10 gallon capacity will hold about nine gallons of water when filled. It will also include a layer of gravel, various items of tank equipment and decorations. This small 10 gallon tank will therefore weigh at least 100 pounds! Sourcing Your Fish Tank Stand There is a wide variety

The first decision you must make when you decide to start an aquarium is whether you plan to keep freshwater fish or saltwater fish. It's up to you whether you want to keep saltwater or freshwater, but if this is your first aquarium, then I suggest you start with a freshwater aquarium. ( bakmaat )2.

My Friend’s Fish Tank, Pet Goldfish and Aquarium Decor
I just admire the aquarium of a neighbor friend of mine, a lover of exotic pet fish, as she proclaims she is. Albeit most of his fish are goldfish; all are really quite large in size already, about more or less the size of a closed fist. Some ten or so wonderful, funny pet goldfish she has actually; they have been swimming up and about for a good two years with not one of them getting sick (according to my friend), much less earning that trip to pet heaven. Her 25-liter aquarium is the opposite of what I want mine to be, simple, with real sea weeds and no fancy ceramic decorations. This way my aquarium is not cluttered and there is more room for my pet fish to swim about. Still, my neighbor's fish tank took my fancy, if only because it is well maintained. What matters most to me with an aquarium is the water. It must be clear, not cloudy because non-filtering of the water. Obviously, the water is clear of pet fish food, which means only the right amount of pet food is given to t

Aquarium Heaters - Preset (Thermostatic) vs Non-Preset (Automatic)
There are two basic types of aquarium heater (and a sub type) Another term for the automatic heater is a Non-Preset Heaters, while the Thermostatic heater is also referred to as a Preset Heater. PRESET HEATERS: The Thermostatic or Preset heater has a built in thermostat (or a remote sensor as is common in many titanium aquarium heaters). These heaters may use a digital thermostat, usually monitoring the impedance of a thermistor (a resistor used to measure temperature changes in the aquarium, relying on the change in its resistance with changing temperatures), or the potential across a thermocouple (a temperature sensor used to measure electric potential difference). There are many models of aquarium heaters available today that come preset or with a temperature gauge on the side of the heater or on the control knob to help the aquarist set the temperature. The aquarist should allow the heater to adjust to water temperature for 30 minutes before plugging in this type of heater to allow

Identification and Treatment of Dropsy in Freshwater Aquarium Fish
Question about Dropsy: I posted about a female Siamese fighting fish (Betta) that appeared to have dropsy a few weeks ago. I treated her twice with Maracyn. After the swelling didn't start to go down, but she is still as swollen as she was then, but has not got to the point were her scales have started to protrude? Do you know what else that it could be. She seems buoyant and the swollen cavity appears to be filled by either air, of a clear liquid, when she swims in front of the lights? Answer:Have you tried Kanacyn? Maracyn (Erythromycin) is usually not effective for most causes of Dropsy. And dropsy is generally a symptom of something else, sometimes digestive, often kidney related. Because of this, Dropsy can often be very difficult to treat, especially if caught in an advanced case in the fish. What the aquarist often observes is a "pinecone" swelling generally caused by fluid building inside the body cavity, for this reason, reducing this swelling is an important step in effectin

How Many Fish Will My Aquarium Hold?
Have you got yourself a new aquarium? If so, you need to have a plan on how you are going to fill it with those beautiful fish. Before you work out exactly which fish you want, you need to work out have many inches (or centimetres) of fish you can accommodate in your new aquarium. The fish will obviously have more room to swim and set up their territories in a larger aquarium, but more important than the size of the aquarium is the shape and proportions of the tank. A long, shallow tank will hold more fish than a short deep tank, even if they have exactly the same amount of water in each. The reason for this is that the oxygen content of the water depends on how easily it can be supplied. The only place this can happen is where the air meets the water, which is at the surface of the tank, so the larger the surface, the more oxygen available. Similarly, the carbon dioxide that the fish exhale has to be expelled from the water, and this also happens at the surface. So, to work out the ca

      Travel: OSaka Aquarium, Japan
The Osaka Aquarium is without a doubt one of the best aquariums I have ever seen. The location on Osaka Bay is stunning. Even without the aquarium it would be a great place to watch ships coming and going. Just next to the aquarium an antique looking ship named Santa Maria takes tourists on sightseeing trips around the bay. Also, there is another Ferris Wheel nearby. The Japanese must love Ferris Wheels. I have seen more of them around the bay when I am flying and one is under construction near my hotel. The aquarium itself was awesome. I spent quite awhile going through it. There was a lot to see, with marine life from around the world. I took a lot of good video and pictures with my camera. Check this one out. Share This

      Aquarium Take Along Swing
This swing does the job and does it in less space than the standard baby swing. It folds up nicely and as the name says, you can "Take Along" with you anywhere. For a short while my son would only sleep at his babysitters house in this swing. The batteries last a long time. My only complaint is that it is super low to the ground and if you had a c-section, it's hard to get down that low in the first couple of weeks. I also noticed that this is not very good for an infant. I had to prop up pillows and blankets so Baby would not slouch down into the chair. The Fisher Price Aquarium Take Along swing is designed for an older infant.RATING: ***COMMENTS: Easy to transport and plays acceptable music. The motor makes a lot of noise.

Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium Bouncer
I had no idea what I was doing when choosing items for our baby registry. I did know that I needed a bouncer and went with the Fisher Price Papasan Bouncer based purely on looks. This ended up being a LOUSY choice. Baby did not like this and I could not understand why. So many other Moms recommend that I get a bouncer, so why did my baby not like this one? Well, the Papasan Bouncer is BORING. We went over to a friends house and they had the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium Bouncer. I put my son in it just to see his reaction and he LOVED it! He actually started crying when I took him out of it! On our way home from our friend's house we stopped at the store and purchased the Ocean Wonders Aquarium Bouncer!RATING: *****COMMENTS: Has a bunch of different settings and actually stays on for longer than 5 minutes (Papasan Bouncer has a very short "on" time). On Buying a Starter Aquarium
Some people want to maintain a fish tank or aquarium if only because of its soothing or relaxing effect on the one looking at it. Who would not be relaxed when you stare at colorful pet fish swimming and moving about gracefully in front of you? Other love to have an aquarium and buy pet fish of various sizes shapes and colors if only because it adds a whole lot of aesthetic appeal to your home or office. Expensive decorations, gravel and sea rocks, live plants are acquired just to make the fish tank as attractive as possible. Speaking of plants, it is really advisable to use the live ones instead of the plastic plants that are stuck to the sand. Live plants or weeds have important use such as the production of oxygen for the tropical fish. They also serve as habitat for the fish and contribute to a very natural look of aquatic environment. When maintaining live sea plants, you have to supply them with adequate lights in order to ensure the promotion of growth. You might notice your f

Having My Own Pet Fish and Aquarium
You chanced upon the aquarium of a friend, and you were simply amazed with its presentation as well as the colorful variety of pet fish swimming over, under and around the rocks and sea weeds as well as the small figurines decorating the aquarium. Immediately, you want to take care of your own pet fish as well. Okay, having some tropical fish as pet can be a very exciting and even therapeutic hobby for anyone. But first of all, you have to decide on which pet tropical fish you would want to have. When I was small, I just love to have black mollies, if only because they are easy to reproduce. I would be surprised one morning that my fish tank was filled with tiny young black mollies. I was just disappointed to know that black mollies eat their young – I knew when their number grew less as days went by. I had to save the rest by separating them to another tank. I also like orange swordtail fish as pets, because they are what I call hardy fish. I just love their strong color, and what

      Sarasota Aquarium
MOTE Marine Laboratory was really fun for the kids. They dissected a squid, pet local stingrays, oggled hammerheads, heard all about the giant squid while leaning on the sarcophagus where it's shrunken and alarmingly awful looking carcass lies in state. They did the stupid penny squishing thing. We bought badges. I'm going to make a field trip and activity pillow for each of them for this year's things. It was a four hour drive round trip. They played a dino card game. Baby mostly slept or ate. I was tired, but made it.I feel so jaded. My dominating thought was they should get over their apparent aversion to a proper renovation overseen by actual museum exhibit designers. It's the Aquarium's 50th anniversary and it shows. I say it's time to get some grants and corporate sponsors with deep pockets and overhaul the place. They've got tons of space, but it's so poorly used. They do such great work, but they're doing it in a place Jacques Cousteau would think was state-of-the art.T

Long Beach Aquarium - Giant Sea Bass
Wiki says: Giant sea bass were once a relatively common inhabitant of Southern California waters, yet in the 1980s it was facing the threat of local extinction off the California coast. Beginning in the late 1800s, the species supported both a commercial fishery taking hundreds of thousands of kg annually, and a sport fishery that also landed hundreds of fish each year. Spear fishermen also exploited the giant sea bass, first as free divers, and then after the mid 1950s using scuba gear. Often the divers would target the species when they moved into shallow water during the summer months to spawn. By the late 1970s, biologists with the California State Department of Fish and Game, recognized that the local population of giant sea bass was in serious trouble. Actions were taken, resulting in protection from commercial and sport fishing that went into effect in 1982. Yet for almost two decades encounters with giant sea bass were scarce. The giant sea bass reproduces slowly with a populat

Spider Crab - Long Beach Aquarium
From Wikipedia… “The Japanese spider crab, Macrocheira kaempferi, is the largest living arthropod; fully grown it can reach a leg span of almost 4 m (13 feet), a body size of up to 37 cm (15 inches) and a weight of up to 20 kg (44 pounds). The crab’s natural habitat is on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean (some 300-400 m deep) around Japan, where it feeds on dead animals and shellfish. It is believed to have a life expectancy of up to 100 years”. One of the more impressive displays I saw while at the aquarium was the Spider Crab. They had a tank with a handful of them and it was amazing the size of these crabs. The pictures below don’t capture the enormous sizes of these crabs compare to the ones we usually see. I kept on thinking “Deadliest Catch” from the Discovery Channel for some reason. haha. They were somewhat active as one tried to climb the front part of the tank giving everyone a great look at how wide it can expand. The tank itself

Discover The Importance of Proper Aquarium Lighting
Aquarium lighting is often the last item a person is thinking about when buying an aquarium. The lighting of an aquarium, however, is very important. There are 4 different kinds of aquarium setups that may require different kinds of aquarium lighting: Freshwater - fish only. Freshwater - fish and plants. Salt water – fish only. Saltwater – fish and corals. The most light-sensitive aquarium set up is the aquarium with saltwater fish and corals.Corals are categorized as animals, not plants, and therefore they are feeding from the light. So the proper aquarium lighting is very crucial and will make the difference between growing beautiful and lustrous corals and having them die in your reef tank. I saw people swimming with the sharks in the shark realm. I didn't swim with them because I was too young. You have to be twelve years old or older to swim with the sharks. Most of the jelly fish were blue and they are called moon jelly fish. The pink jelly fish gave birth. I had a chance to touch them. I touched them with two fingers. They were squooshy. Aquarium puts three rare fish on display
THE Shanghai Ocean Aquarium plans to add three rare fish that have never been exhibited in the country before to its collection - the freshwater lionfish, sisorid catfish and sea apples. The freshwater lionfish has a big brown head that accounts for one-third of its total length. It has spines on its skin that can cause pain if brushed against, but they pose no other threat, aquarium officials said. The sisorid catfish is found in the mountain rivers of India, Myanmar and China and can grow to 12 centimeters in length. It has a flattened body with an adhesive organ on its stomach, which allows the fish to stick to rocks and maintain its position in turbulent water. Sea apples are a kind of sea cucumber that is yellow, orange and purple. When sensing extreme danger, they produce toxic compounds, which can be released after death as well. source: ShanghaiDaily.com
