This was the very beginning of the excursion, as the boat circled the island before approaching the north shore. It’s a beautiful morning view as the light strikes the structures, and the still water made for vivid reflections. Someday I’d like to do a large painting of this scene. Decisions like this rarely make everyone happy, but I am forced to look at the big picture and do what is right for the marketplace. There will be a release later today that will limit Posties to 2 posts per day until further notice. This should allievate some issues caused by some Posties taking an large amount of the available Opps and open these up to more people.

We're allowed to use mixed media as long as the major part is done in pastel so I'll probably underpaint in watercolour or acrylic.Reflections could be viewed in a lot of different ways - meditative reflection rather than simple mirror like actual reflection for instance - but it will suit me if what I do fits in with a body of work that I have ongoing, rather than an isolated image that won't be shown anywhere else, so it's likely to be either a waterways or seascape image.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about a nice little filter, the "Approaching MA 200 day + confirmation" filter, which backtests extremely well over the past couple of years. This particular filter even backtests extremely well in a particularly bad time period for the market if you tighten your stop a bit (see here). I just did some backtesting of the "Approaching 200 day + confirmation" filter. This time, based on Woodshedder's suggestions, I tested the 2 year period beginning 1/1/02 and changed the backtesting parameters from my usual 15 day maximum hold and 8% stop loss to a maximum hold of 5 days and a 2.5% stop loss.The results, for a mediocre time in the market, are quite nice:141 trades, 51% wins, 1.4 reward to risk, 60% ROI (compared to SPY ROI of -2.1%)My usual backtesting parameters (8% stop loss and 15 day maximum hold) yielded quite unimpressive results:141 trades, 60% wins, 1.0 reward to risk, -2% ROI (compared to SPY ROI of -2.1%)Woodshedder's suggested changes illustrate the importance of cutting off your losers quickly. I obviously think the "Approaching 200 day + confirmation" filter is pretty promising. It delivers an extremely strong winning percentage and excellent ROIs in both the six month period beginning 12/1/06 (77% wins and 119% ROI) and the two year period beginning 6/8/05 (66% wins and 71% ROI). However, the SPY delivered ROIs during those two periods of 19% and 13%, respectively. The question I want to try to address here is how well the filter performs when the market isn't as strong. I think performing some backtests during sideways or even down periods for the market will provide further insight as to how reliable this filter is for every day use.Below are some backtesting results I came up with for the "Approaching 200 day + Confirmation" filter in various time periods:Test #1: 7 Mos from 12/30/05. Here at MarketMatador.com, we’ve called Frontier Airlines (FRNT) perfectly in every direction. History doesn’t always repeat itself in the investing game, but it certainly appears as though FRNT may be about to hit another short-term bottom.
