I really like pork loin, mostly because it's fairly lean, I can get a lovely cut of meat inexpensively at Costco and a little slice will satisfy me quite well (I'm not a huge meat eater--give me pasta, soup or salad any day. Or forget that and just give me dessert--even better).A $14.00 pork loin will serve all six of us for two meals easily which works out to just over a dollar a serving--not to

Either there are more memoirs being published today or my eye has become better attuned to picking them from the stacks and stacks of new books I am exposed to every month. But, while there may be more memoir choices than ever before, finding an honestly written one is still the challenge. And why anyone would want to waste time on memoirs that are less than honest is beyond me.

If the Spanish conquistadors had known what they were onto when they brought tomatoes to the old world in the sixteenth century, they wouldn't have spent the rest of their careers searching for gold, because they had already found it. If any of them had any prescience at all, they would have simply opened a canning facility somewhere in the vicinity of Mount Vesuvius, and begun mining the gold that became known as pomodòri 'golden apples'.By the time southern Italians began manufacturing pasta asciuta 'semolina pasta' in the late eighteenth century, inovative chefs had already invented dozens of preparations for tomatoes (also referred to pómi d'amore 'apples of love'). So when tomato sauce was introduced to pasta, it was indeed love at first sight. Pasta alla marinara was love at first

While I was in the Union Square green market yesterday, I picked up some Dried Crispin Apples from Red Jacket Orchards. They are regular in taste but what I like is that they are just Crispin apples, with nothing added. Often, when you buy dried fruit from the supermarket, there is added sugars, sulphites, or other chemicals. Less is more.

It doesn’t make sense to condemn an apple for not being as good as an orange or vice versa. They are both fruits that essentially perform the same function but appeal to different tastes and provide some different benefits. Just as it is unreasonable to compare apples with oranges, it is unreasonable to fault hybrid technology for lacking certain characteristics found in non-hybrid diesel engines and vice versa. However, what will be interesting is to observe how diesel electric hybrid technology will evolve into the market, which may allow consumers to get the best of both worlds or very close.A diesel BMW 520d was compared with a Toyota Prius in a European road test. The diesel BMW got slightly better fuel mileage at 50.3 mpg while the Toyota Prius achieved 48.1 mpg. To me the comp

Until a couple of months ago I don't think I had ever painted a vegetable or a piece of fruit, certainly not in oils, but I am beginning to understand why food has been such a popular subject for still life painting for so many centuries.
First of all of course it is perfect for my daily paintings because it is always readily available, tends to be a little less complicated than flowers but has myriad subtleties of tone and colour. Also there are the wonderful associations of taste and smell, I find that I can quite literally taste the fruit that I am painting and perhaps I am able sometimes able to depict that in paint. Can you paint a flavour? I would like to think so.

Up just before dawn as usual to join in with the dawn chorus, the humans still haven't realise that once we'vewoken them up with all our squawking we all go back to bed for four hours. Had another feed of grapes, the Purple Pooper strikes again! One of my daily chores is going around to all the fallen apples and making peckmarks in them so the humans can't eat them. Not much on the bird-table today, stale bread that was so hard I nearly bent my beak, and some coffeee cake that gave me the shakes. I kicked the rock-hard bit of bread off the bird-table and it almost took out the cat that was sitting underneath. I think the cat's name must be gerrroutofit, that's what the gardener calls out everytime he sees it. I wonder where Ratty is today?

I've seen and read a lot about this company, Raymar. Other artists I have admired have been using their panels as supports. (Such as Jim Wodark, William Wray, and others.) Raymar sponsors a contest with some serious artist judges. They accept entries each month for the rest of the year and the requisite is that you have to paint on their panels to enter. What a great marketing idea! Get all of these artists to buy your panels and then have a contest to see who paints the best on them. Great idea!! This year I thought I'd give it a shot. Two of the most difficult things for me to paint are metal and fabric. I mentioned the met

I am telling you this because I hope some artist out there who is considering selling their soul and giving away their copyrights for a pittance will pay attention to this and say, "Not just no, but hell no." I am amazed that anyone who is in the print and publishing industry in this day and age would be so greedy and audacious as to ask any artist to relinquish copyrights for any reason. If, you, the artist, are reading this and considering such a ruination of your creation...email me and I will set your mind straight. I, having been burned by blood-suckers in the past in other ways, can tell
"Apples and Pewter"12X9 Oil on Raymar PanelIn ProgressSometimes you just do one to challenge yourself...and this one is one of those for me. I think metals are difficult to paint. The idea is to paint what you see...get the reflections right. I've seen paintings of metal that look very real, and that can be wonderful. In this case, I am hoping for real, yet expressionistic a bit. In other words, I'm hoping to throw some life into the still life by emphasizing colors and not smoothing out the brush strokes too much. This photo really lacks the brilliance of actual color due to some glare, so tomorrow I'll try to capture it better with the camera. Meanwhile, here is the start of it. Stay tuned....

Today I pulled out my acrylics to finish up this still life that I started last week. When I left for Florida, I put the bowl of fruit into the refrigerator with a sign on it saying, “Jamie’s Still Life—DO NOT EAT!” I suppose they got the message, because it was still there today. I think I’ll have a clementine now!

I was hoping to wrap up this painting today, but sometimes life interferes with painting and I just can’t finish in time. Since I couldn’t offer my viewers a finished product for today, I thought I’d at least show some images of the steps along the way.
First I drew in my composition with acrylic burnt sienna paint, and blocked in some values. I don’t spend too much time on this stage—just enough to kill some of the white support, add a little complexity to the color, and give myself a road map for local color and values.
Next, I set out a pretty large selection of colors for this painting because I really wanted to capture the vibrancy of the fruit and bright bowl:
I started with the shadow areas, and worked until the support was covered with the local colors. (See first image.)To finish, I’ll be pushing lights and darks, adding in some details, highlights, and reflected color.

Benefits & Uses of ApplesBENEFITSA fresh apple is the ideal, healthy snack - easy to carry, filling, juicy and refreshing. Some varieties are a good source of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant and helps to maintain the immune system. Apples are also relatively low in calories and contain a high level of fructose. This simple sugar, which is sweeter than sucrose (main component of cane sugar) is metabolized slowly and so helps to control blood sugar levels.OTHER USESIn herbal medicine, ripe, uncooked apples have traditionally been given to treat constipation, while the stewed fruit can be eaten for diarrhoea and gastroenteritis.Apples are also used in poultices for skin inflammations.Dried apples are eaten as a snack. Apple slices are exposed to the fumes of burning sulphur to prevent them from browning, then dried in the sun on wire trays. As moisture is lost, natural sugars become concentrated, which is why athletes value dried apples as a source of carbohydrate that is quickly c
The Apples in Stereo have been charming listeners for years with their psychedelic rock music. They're the most accessible of all the Elephant 6 bands, and one of the more talented ones. But with "New Magnetic Wonder," this lovable band creates their best album yet -- tight pop melodies that play on their strengths, colourful music, and a sound that's just a little bit warped. It sprawls over two discs, yet never feels like they're overstuffing it.It opens with a chiming little melody... and a muffled voice speaking through a vocorder, like a pop Darth Vader. Then the nimble guitar and drums kick in, blossoming into a fun, energetic pop tune. "Turn up your STER-E-O!"That energy carries over into the songs that follow -- solid rockers ("you follow the skyway... you follow the streets and the cars/and the shadows and the stars!"), shimmering psychpop, bouncy rock'n'roll songs, sunny guitar pop, and lo-fi ramblers. Then the Apples segue back into an even more polished second volume --
Benefits & Uses of Apples
A healthy diet must contain at least five cups of fruits and vegetables per day in order to reduce the risk of cancer-related and other chronic diseases.
That’s because fruits and vegetables contain polyphenols which protect our normal cells from free radical damage, thereby boost up our immune systems.
Dieticians strongly recommend apples as part of our diet due to their plentiful source of polyphenols.
A fresh apple makes an ideal, healthy snack – easy to carry, filling, juicy and refreshing. It is also relatively low in calories, contains no fat, cholesterol or sodium, so it is an excellent fruit to maintain healthy weight and heart.
Apples are also high in fructose, a simple sugar which is sweeter than sucrose (main component of cane sugar). As Fructose metabolized slower, it helps to control blood sugar levels, therefore is suitable for diabetes patients.
In herbal medicine, ripe, uncooked apples have traditionally been given to treat constipa
The newest dwarf planet discoved is the goddess of Discord, Eris. Her mythology is complex. Looked upon primarily as the genesis of discord, she is looked at another way as well.
“The Goddess of Discord is just one way of looking at Eris. But the other [side of Eris] [is that] . . .She stirs up even the shiftless to toil; for a man grows eager to work when he considers his neighbor, a rich man who hastens to plough and plant and put his house in good order; and neighbor vies with his neighbor as he hurries after wealth. This Strife is wholesome for men.”
In other words, another form of the word strife is “striving.” Competition creates conditions where individuals . . . strive to improve their life.”
The parthogenically produced daughter of the goddess Night, who, in turn, was created in primodial Chaos, she has no male heritage. Eris had the ability to produce children without the aid of a consort and she did so many times. She was whole unto herself, not needing the mal

Caramel apples have always been one of my favorite treats to eat during carnivals, fairs, and those types of things. Ever since that day I had my braces removed, I've been craving for some caramel covered apples. I've never made them myself, so I decided to give it a try.First stop was the supermarket, to pick up all the goodies. Three simple ingredients did it all: Granny Smith apples, Caramel, and Peanuts. At the supermarket, we debated between two options:1. using packaged caramel wraps specially made for caramel apples, or2. buying a plastic tub of caramel and melting it ourselves. We decided to give the caramel wraps a try. Looking at the directions printed on the back of the package, the process seemed simple and easy. It had just enough wraps for 5 apples. It came with the wooden Popsicle sticks. Plus, cleanup would be a breeze! At home...First, we washed the apples with warm water to remove the wax coating. Then, we crushed some peanuts using a spiky mallet on a wooden cutting bo

Halloween is on the horizon. And so it this time of year my mind always drifts to not only what kind of hoe I should be this year, but various party games I am likely to be subjected to. One of the most popular is bobbing for apples. It all started with the Celtic festival of Samhain where the people would worship various divine spirits, in particular the female deities of love and fertility. When the Romans took over, they adopted the festival and combined it with their own celebration of the festival of the Goddess Pomona.Apples were an integral part of these celebrations. They were associated with the feminine power of these goddesses and the pentagram that is visible when apples are cut in half gives them immense power. All this girlhood gives apple bobbing a prognostic dimension. Perhaps this is the reason the practice has been passed down through the ages.Though apple bobbing has changed some, it still retains the divine essentials:That proves one thing. No one can bob better
Hey! What do you think? *looks around* It may change a bit... I need to live with it for a few days. I love that my favorite Illustrator, French Artist, Marie Perron, is sketching svelte clones of me.
I want to thank my dear friend Merisi of Merisi's Vienna For Beginners, for awarding me with the "Break Out Blogger Award". Her sentiments really brightened my day.
Returning the favor, I want to continue on the award by recognizing two outstanding blogs that I read daily.
Clarice of Storybook Woods is a California girl at heart. Her blog is a soothing oasis of inspiration and all things cozy. If her "about me page" doesn't charm you, nothing will.
Mary of Alpineberry is a San Francisco native with an unpretentious baking blog. I can't tell you how refreshing this is to not read a baking website where the cook thinks they are the only ones on the plant who can make a pear cobbler. Mary is a real domestic goddess. Her recipes are challenging, but she walks you th
Charlie seems to be developing a bit of a stubborn streak. A few days ago we were in the grocery store when Charlie spotted a bin of shiny red apples. She pointed at them, laughed and gave us the hugest, cutest grin. As we moved away from the apples the grin turned into a frown and then Charlie started with her fake baby cry. We gave in a bought two apples for the princess to hold. She held on to them the whole way home, and then for TWO more hours. Charlie loved those apples. Eventually her bed time rolled around and we had to take the apples away. As you can see, in this video expose, Charlie was not amused.
P.S.: Charlie forgot about the apples when she woke up the next morning - in fact she now feels completely indifferent about apples.
By Karyn Chenoweth Researchers in the United States and Germany found compounds naturally found in apples may help reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, determined eating quercetin -- a flavonol found most in apples and onions -- significantly reduced the risk of pancreatic cancer in smokers. The researchers tracked food intake and health outcomes of 183,518 participants in the Multiethnic Cohort Study for eight years and evaluated the participants' food consumption and calculated the intake of the three flavonols quercetin, kaempferol and myricetin. Smokers with the lowest intake of flavonols presented with the most pancreatic cancer. Smoking is an established risk factor for the often fatal pancreatic cancer, the researchers said. The study also found women had the highest intake of total flavonols and 70 percent of the flavonol intake came from quercetin -- linked to apple and onion consumption. Unlike many dietary com
"Apples"Completed: 10.2.07oil om canvas board7" x 5" This painting was a bit of a struggle for me. Since I have not painted still lifes in awhile, I am having trouble just finishing a painting in the 1-3 hours that it usually takes for other daily artists. For me, this is part of my studying process again. At times, it my take me too long to post a finished painting. If that is the case, I will start posting my progress through a painting I"m having trouble on. During the process of the painting I will take photos of different points through my exploration of that particular art piece. This artwork was supposed to have a flower between the two apples. However, as I started painting it, I could see it was not going to go the way I wanted it to in the time frame I had. I took the flower out of the still life and painted a study of the two apples instead. The main part that gave me trouble was the indentation of the red and green apple where the stem comes out. It was getting a little da

While Apple is getting kudos for refunding the money people spent on the i-phone the first 8 weeks it was out on shelves, they’ve taken to a new business practice that is decidedly less deserving of applause. Having stopped into the Apple store to get an estimate on time for fixing my laptop (using my Applecare that I bought for an extra $250 when I bought the $2500 computer) I was told by the junior sales rep that it was just too difficult to give a time frame. I asked if there was an average, you know, 3 days, 3 months? Again, the answer was “it’s just too difficult to say”, but he was happy to sell me Apple’s new product Procare. Apparently for another $100 Procare will bump my job up in line to get repaired. As a professional in the media, I have been a long and faithful supporter of Apple, owning 10 different Macintosh computers and two i-pods. I pay 2-3 times as much for the privilage of using my mac, and now with System x have taken to buying Apple

My road trip friends are awol. It's been almost a week. I'm sure they're making their way in a southerly direction, without thinking too many Florida thoughts. They last reported chilly tidings from Boston. They simply cannot have purchased coats. That would be too weird. But I bet they ate great apples. I miss great apples. If they're heading south, but not home, they should go to Dollywood. And they should buy me a snowy orb souvenir thingy from there. With Dolly Parton in it. It's a pilgrimage worthy of their adventuring hearts. And I haven't seen snow in ages.Anyway, I sent them a picture of my bananas to tempt them back. Of course bananas take so long to ripen they still may not be ready when the gang returns. I'm about to go off on an ADD-inspired string.Somewhere I read that bananas are a really labor intensive crop, they can only be harvested and handled by actual people, never machines. What should we do with the dead leaves? We can only wrap so much food in them. Maybe m
This cartoon is dedicated to Fanless, the b00bz crusader par excellence! So like the other day, my hard-ass friends were giving me shit because I didn't know about Guy Kawasaki. Hello? Unless you're Buddha, Jesus, Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Angelina Jolie or my parents, please have your receptionist call mine and maybe we can do lunch.Listen to Manola's unexpected Southern Baptist evangelist cousin chime in for a religous rant with a totally fake accent! This ignorant, back-assward blogger confesses she doesn't give a shit about blogosphere celebrity. Don't get her wrong ... it's not about the bloggers, it's about the hype!We apologize in advance for the crappy quality of the audio. We also apologize for the customary irreverence and disrespect. The truth is, we do appreciate the hard work, talent and worldly influence of so many folk who have forged ahead in our era of electronic communication ... but seriously, shall we grieve if we not know wherefore Guy Kawasaki? Yes, you can even grill dessert for your guest. Here's a yummy recipe courtest of JewishExponent.Grilled Caramelized Apples-and-Cheese 1/4 cup honey 1 Tbsp. apple-cider vinegar 1 Tbsp. walnut oil 2 large Granny Smith apples 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil 8 oz. cheddar, Camembert or Brie, cut in wedgesMix the honey with the vinegar and oil in a bowl. Core the apples and cut off the ends. Slice into 1/2 -inch-thick rounds and place in the honey mixture so that all the slices are completely coated. Allow the apples to rest in the honey mixture for 10 minutes. Grease a rack over a moderately hot fire with the oil. Grill the apple slices for 4 to 5 minutes per side, turning frequently, until golden brown. Serve with wedges of cheese. Makes 4 servings.
Prosper sent out a marketing e-mail last night pitching the improved Prosper returns compared to the S&P500. Their blurb is below if you were somehow unlucky enough to miss out on it.
ZCommodore was all over their disclaimers:
First, they are comparing a year of returns on Prosper with 2 years on the S&P 500. The dates are different as well. I don't know what the returns looked like for the most
There are some things in life that can be passed off as a simple error, but using the term "nigger" ("neger" in Danish) when referring to the color of a computer product on your company web site is not one of them.
I’m referring to a story in "Nyhedsavisen" (a free newspaper in Denmark) from the 22 August, which states that last Tuesday, users of Apples web site in Denmark were able to choose between the colors "white" or "nigger" for a "batterieopladingsprogram" (battery recharging program) for a 13 inch MacBook. You can see a scanned version of the story on the right hand side of this blog post, but the blog linked blog post is more detailed.
These options were not available to other users of Apples web site, just those from Denmark. Everybody else just had the options "white" or "black". The issue was fixed on Thursday afternoon, but what really gets me is Apples explanation of how this occurred.
