By Mark SchaussAs I have pointed out in the past, the media seems to love to distort the truth about the benefits of nutritional supplements. The media recently jumped on one of the worst studies on antioxidants done to date. Their claim, which was reported in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine was that women gained no benefit from the supplementation of antioxidants like vitamin C and E. Turns out, that was a clear distortion of the findings of the study. In a blog I did last week I showed that the researchers did not look at the lifestyles of the study subjects which distorts the data. Today, I found out more dishonesty about the study which sickened me. Turns out that they included the data on the benefits of antioxidants from women who DID NOT TAKE the supplements. They
Through biochemical research we’re learning that we are not defenseless against this attack on our body by free radicals. Antioxidants are like the glass doors or fine-wire mesh we place in front of our fireplace. The sparks are still going to fly but our carpet will then be protected. As you begin to imagine the war that is taking place within every cell in your body, you can envision the two opposing forces: the enemy--free radicals; and your allies--antioxidants and their supporting nutrients.Living a healthy life becomes a matter of balance. You must have enough antioxidants available to readily neutralize the number of free radicals your body produces. If you don’t, "oxidative stress" will occur. When this oxidative stress is allowed to persist over a prolonged period of time, you
By Brenda HoffmanMore than likely you have heard the term "antioxidant" by now. However, do you know what it is, why you need it or how you get it? Probably not. So, herein what you need to know about antioxidants will be explained. The first thing that you need to know about in order to understand antioxidants is the process of oxidation. This is a fundamental and necessary biomechanical reaction. Not all forms of this process are helpful though. There are some that forms that happen at the wrong time and are thus disastrous to your health. However, antioxidants can be a big help in helping positive oxidation to occur so that you will have sustained, good health. Antioxidants also play a key role in keeping the proteins in your cell membranes from being damaged. These proteins ar
By Timothy Moore When you think of getting high amounts of antioxidants, you may think of eating pomegranates, blueberries, blackberries or strawberries, but a new study found that having a handful of peanuts can give you an antioxidant boost. A team of researchers at the University of Florida tested a dozen different selections of peanuts and found that not only are peanuts rich in protein and monounsaturated fats (good fats), but they also contain as many antioxidants as strawberries, and are higher in antioxidants than apples, beets and carrots. Pomegranate remains the highest antioxidant fruit. Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals in plant food that protect the body against free radicals, which can cause heart disease and cancer. Peanuts are high in polyphenol antiox

By John Corbin Just what are antioxidants and can they do anything to help prevent or fight cancer? Information from the National Cancer Institute describe antioxidants as substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A, and other substances. Can antioxidants prevent cancer? Considerable laboratory evidence indicates that antioxidants may slow or even prevent the development of cancer. However, information from recent clinical trials is less that clear. Five large-scale clinical trials publi

By: Carl Cruz Here’s a quote I hear a lot from new Acai fans: “Acai has the richest Antioxidant of any food in the world.”Yes, you can truthfully say that, it is a quote by Dr. Strauss, who was the first person to run an ORAC evaluation on Acai berries. However, do people really understand what this means? It’s not really referring to the ORAC score at all, but the high number of Antioxidant Compounds in Acai, which to me is far more impressive. Most people simply think that relative to other fruits, an Acai berry ranks somewhere around 1,027, while a blueberry, for instance, ranks about 92. Over ten times as much.Although those are the ORAC designations for fresh Acai and fresh low bush blueberries, this is way too simplistic of a way to think about antioxidants, and frankly s

Skin wrinkles are products of natural aging. How fast you develop wrinkles depend on many factors such as exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, lack of vitamins, lack of antioxidants, etc. Oxidative damage due to free radical chain reactions occur in our skin every second. antioxidants help prevent the damage by neutralizing or quenching the free radicals. Damages done to the skin accumulate through the years until wrinkles become noticeable. The time it takes for wrinkles to appear may be later for persons whose skin are less subjected to oxidative damage. But persons whose skin are constantly exposed to oxidative damage like being exposed to thesun always, may have wrinkles appear earlier in life.Having a diet rich in antioxidants can greatly help in extending the time wrinkles appear.

By: Nicole Cutler, L.Ac.For anyone living with Hepatitis C, supporting your liver in every way possible with the intent to slow the progression of the disease is vital. A healthy diet rich in antioxidants is one easy and effective way you can achieve this goal.A byproduct of the cellular oxidation witnessed when a substance is broken down, free radicals are atoms with an unpaired electron. This creates a chemical instability capable of damaging the walls of cells as well the genetic materials contained within them. Antioxidants combat this process by reducing the damage caused by free radicals.Studies have shown that oxidation plays a large role in the advancement of liver disease, Alternately, various studies showed the far-ranging benefits of antioxidants, making them vitally important t
The terminology that describes what Antioxidants do is pretty exciting! Antioxidants are vitamins that fight "free radicals" which are the byproducts created when your body burns fuel. Vitamins C and E are some of the better-known antioxidants. But before you go out and buy megadoses of these vitamins please know that more is not always better! Food has so many other nutrients and substances known as phytochemicals that protect against disease. In addition to a diet rich in antioxidants, or if you can't quite fit in all of your daily servings, you should try supplementing your diet with an antioxidant vitamin. So eat a varied diet, including different sources of foods high in vitamin E and C and selenium. Enjoy at least five servings of fruits and vegetables, preferably those with deepest

By: Carina MacInnesAntioxidants have been widely praised in the media. Many know they are linkedwith anti-aging properties. However this is not new, it all began with one man’stheory a half a century ago about how free radicals were associated with aging, and science has been trying to catch up with it ever since. As Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D., states in his 2001 book, “The Wrinkle Cure”:“When it comes to aging, it’s not Father Time that’s public enemy number 1. It’sthe very busy, very nasty little molecule called the free radical.”The Free Radical Theory of Aging was published by Denman Harman in 1956. By: George Shears As a result of the ongoing wellness revolution, more and more people are learning that they need to add high quality nutritional supplements to their diet in order to help prevent and reverse a wide array of chronic degenerative diseases. The basic reason for this is very simple--we are genetically programmed to eat only the simple, whole foods that were consumed by our stone-age ancestors. To whatever degree we deviate from this kind of diet, we deprive our bodies of key necessary nutrients and ingest substances that actually cause them harm.Tragically, about 90% of the average American diet now consists of mummified foods that are lacking in the key nutrients we need; even worse, they commonly contain a wide array of ingredients that are either downright t

When it comes to aging, free radicals are public enemy number one. Our cells use oxygen to produce energy. In the process, they generate free radicals - unstable oxygen molecules created during basic metabolic functions as circulation and digestion. Free radicals are also produced by sunlight, by toxins such as pesticides, and by cigarette smoke and air pollution. Most free radicals encountered in our bodies, however, come from oxygen. They are an unavoidable by-product of daily living.

Those who take lemon juice in their tea may be getting far more of the health benefits.
Catechins are naturally occurring antioxidants found in tea; complementing green tea with either citrus juices or vitamin C increases the amount of catechins available for the body to absorb.
Catechins may be responsible for some of green tea's reported health benefits, such as a reduced risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke. But catechins are relatively unstable in the intestines meaning that less than 20 percent of the total generally remains after digestion.
Citrus juice increased available catechin levels by more than five times, and vitamin C increased recovered levels of the two most abundant catechins by six-fold and thirteen-fold.

Vitamins offer many health benefits. Many only think they need to take a good vitamin supplement because their mother said so. However, vitamin supplements offer antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C, and vitamin A. These antioxidants combat reactive oxygen intermediates (free radicals). In order for us to understand why it is important to take a vitamin supplement rich in antioxidants, we need to understand free radicals.
Most recall the widely recognized chlorofluorocarbons which were free radicals produced by solar radiation that caused depletion of the ozone layer. This is probably the most familiar free radical that jogs the memory. However, free radicals have been linked to several diseases such as cancer, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis to name a few. But what are free radicals?
Free radicals are simply atoms or groups of atoms with unpaired electrons in the outer (valence) shell. Why is this so deadly? Most atoms want to attain a stable outer shell. In ord

Following yesterday's announcement of a new study showing the phenomenal benefits of antioxidants for preventing heart disease in women, the mainstream media rallied behind a blatantly false distortion of the study designed to convince the public that vitamins E and C are somehow useless. The popular press, which maintains an incestuous relationship with the pharmaceutical industry, once again demonstrates it is little more than a mouthpiece for the pro-pharma propaganda machine. There is no scrutiny of the study's findings, no critical thinking and absolutely no independent journalism being conducted by the mainstream media on this particular topic. It's as if these media outlets just can't wait to be spoon-fed the latest propaganda from drug company collaborators and then parrot it out to the public as fact.

Vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene are not effective for preventing heart attacks, strokes, or related deaths, according to one of the longest studies ever to examine the cardiovascular impact of antioxidant supplements. The study included more than 8,000 women at high risk for cardiovascular disease who took the vitamin supplements, either alone or in combination, for close to a decade. During this time no evidence emerged of a benefit for antioxidant supplementation. The findings are consistent with other major studies showing antioxidants and other nutritional supplements to be ineffective for the prevention of heart disease and strokes, cardiovascular nutrition expert Alice Lichtenstein, DSc, tells WebMD. Some of these studies even found specific supplements to be harmful, although the latest study did not. “Right now we are all being very cautious about dietary supplements,” says Lichtenstein, who directs the cardiovascular nutrition lab at Boston’s Tufts U

A recent scientific study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh's medical wing found that antioxidants in red wine as well as numerous fruits and veggies kill leukemia cells. This comes as good news to anyone suffering from the debilitating cancerous disease because as of now the best treatment comes only from chemotherapy. The downside, health wise to chemo is the radiation that kills both good and bad cells. Vitamins in fruits like black raspberries have compounds in them that help ward off bad leukemia cells. Doctors hope to take the compounds found in these natural substances and begin to test them on animals and then hopefully people. As of yet, no toxic effects have been discovered in the antioxidant compounds found in red wine or fruits/vegetables.

For people trying to stay young within themselves both their heart and their spirit are what matters. However, staying young on the outside has its challenges. Keeping your skin looking young is certainly a daunting task. Many people are successful in achieving this without anyone else even knowing, and when various people inquire as to what their antiaging secret is, they would answer with ‘antioxidants’.
Many of us have noticed this type of phenomenon on TV or perhaps on the Internet, yet we all ponder what this secret is all about. An antioxidant is a form of chemical that counteracts what are known as free radicals into non-toxic elements, so the primary effect is to stop the body’s cells from being destroyed and contributing to the aging process. In the human body there is a process known as the oxidizing process. The number one reason you should know about antioxidants, free radicals, and oxidation is that you will sound extremely intelligent at dinner parties. We ll begin with oxidation. Oxidation can mean several things the scenario we re concerned with here is the process whereby a molecule either contains oxygen or is combined with oxygen, and the oxygen loses an electron. When the oxygen loses an electron it becomes an unstable substance known as a free radical. This unstable molecule tries to steal an electron from another molecule. This can set up a cha
Antioxidant is a popular term in all health care articles. We always encounter such a term whenever we read or browse health articles in the papers, books or magazines. Moreover, almost all advertisements and commercials of beauty and health products always mention antioxidants.
The question to ask ourselves to be able to understand the sudden hype about antioxidants is to know what it is and what can it do to our body.
Antioxidants are chemicals that prevent the oxidation of other chemicals. In biological systems, the normal processes of oxidation produce highly reactive free radicals that can readily react with and damage other molecules which may continue to damage even the body’s own cells. Antioxidants play the housekeeper’s role, "mopping up" free radicals before they get a chance to do harm in your body.
Although all the hype about antioxidants slowing down the signs of aging and promoting skin rejuvenation do not have a solid scientific basis, most skin ex

By Steven GodlewskiWe are all so full of toxins that our bodies are struggling to get or stay healthy! These toxins not only cause serious diseases, such as cancer, they can also cause us to experience depression or have trouble maintaining a healthy weight - among other things. Unfortunately, we can't avoid these toxins. They are in the air we breathe, and in the food we eat.Our bodies produce their own antioxidants, but as we age or become unhealthy, this production slows down. The antioxidants that our bodies naturally produce even have a hard time keeping up with the toxins in the body even in young children! We must provide our bodies with more antioxidants from an outside source.Your mother was right when she told you to eat your spinach! Science has shown that green vegetables contain the antioxidants that our bodies crave, and the FDA recommends two full servings of greens each and every day. In today's world, that recommendation is not very realistic. We tend to eat on the ru
A handful of pistachios may lower cholesterol and provide the antioxidants usually found in leafy green vegetables and brightly colored fruit, according to a team of researchers.
“Pistachio amounts of 1.5 ounces and 3 ounces — one to two handfuls — reduced risk for cardiovascular disease by significantly reducing LDL cholesterol levels and the higher dose significantly reduced lipoprotein ratios,” says Sarah K. Gebauer, graduate student in integrative biosciences, Penn State, to attendees at the Experimental Biology meeting April 30 in Washington, D.C.
The researchers conducted a randomized, crossover design, controlled feeding experiment to test the effects of pistachios added to a heart healthy moderate-fat diet on cardiovascular disease risk factors. Controlled feeding experiments provide all the food eaten by study subjects for the duration of the study segment.
Participants began the study by eating an Average American Diet consisting of 35 percent total fa
I recently came across nutritional information that gave insight into what vegetable and fruits contain the highest antioxidant content. Antioxidants cleanse your system of free radicals which could turn into something more serious such as cancer, heart disease or Parkinsons. The more food that you eat that contains antioxidants the better chance you have to reduce your risk of health problems in the future. Garlic and onions have high levels of flavonoids, a class of antioxidant, that studies have shown may have health benefits. Another source of food that can help prevent cancer can be found in apricots, sweet potatoes, mangos, carrots, red peppers and papaya. A rule of thumb for finding fruits or vegetables high in chemicals that will benefit you can be seen by the color of the object; natural food with rich, bold colors usually is the most beneficial.
This a blog focused on the continued study of the health benefits that come from using Antioxidants. But before I begin to post information of its benefits, I thought that a clear definition of what Antioxidants are would be needed because not everyone knows what they are. Antioxidants are chemicals which slow oxidation of other chemicals in your body. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and peroxidases are all considered antioxidants. They are used when making dietary supplements and in the prevention of cancer and other diseases. They can also be used found in food and cosmetic preservatives as well as in substances that keep gas and rubber preserved. There is continued research into the many uses of antioxidants on an industrial and human level and we are here to stay up to date with all of the latest findings. If you have anything to add, leave me a comment.
BLOOD COMPONENTSRed blood cells carry oxygen around the body and supply individual cells with the life giving element. They live for only 90 days and over a 12-week period the whole blood supply is completely renewed and replaced. White blood cells are the basis for the immune system and require nutrients to perform their significant function of attacking and destroying invading bacteria and viruses which otherwise would cause illness or death of the biological system. Plasma is the liquid phase of blood, which carries red cells and white cells throughout the body and provides nutrients such as vitamins and minerals to those cells as well as those required by all of the cells exposed to the circulatory system.CHEMISTRYThere are three ways that materials are dissolved in liquids for introduction into our bodies. The first is called an emulsion. An emulsion can best be explained as a mixture of oil and water. In order to make them mix one must break the oil part into very fine bubbles and
