Giant sea stars or starfish that measure 24 inches (60 centimeters) across are held by Sadie Mills, left, and Niki Davey of New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research on February 15, 2008. They and other researchers collected 30,000 sea creatures—many new to science—during a 35-day census in Antarctic waters in February and March, according to a March 26 announcement. The large-scale survey was part of the International Polar Year and Census of Antarctic Marine Life programs, which study the diversity of Antarctic marine life. Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in the world and covers 10% of the earth’s land surface; that size is due to the icecap. The sea ice surrounding the continent expands in winter and contracts in summer, varying the size and shape of the continent from season to season.

Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. It is situated in the southern hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.4 million km², it is the fifth-largest continent in area. Some 98% of it is covered by ice, which averages at least 1.6 kilometers in thickness. At the 3-kilometer (2 mi)-high Vostok Station in Antarctica, scientists recorded the world's lowest temperature: −89 °C (−129 °F). For comparison, this is 11 degrees colder than sublimating dry ice. Antarctica is a frozen desert with little precipitation; the South Pole itself receives less than 10 centimeters (4 in) per year, on average. Temperatures reach a minimum of between −80 °C and −90 °C (−112 °F and −130 °F) in the interior in winter and reach a

Life is busy. Chicks have to be fed, guarded and kept warm even in these short summer months. Nests have to be maintained. Suitable stones and rocks are in short supply and there has been a lot of thieving going on this year. It is difficult with so many of us living in such a confined space. And we have our human guests to keep entertained as well. They look so silly with their bright orange and yellow heavy plastic outfits and unwieldly gum boots. They slither and slide on the slippery rocks and ice. Yet, nearly every day another ship disgorges a small army of them ferrying them to shore in the rubber zodiacs. What is that sound? Is that him? Oh, the unbridled joy. I am starving and I badly need a wash and finally my husband has returned. I’m so happy to see him. He looks very contented

Scientists from Australia, France and Japan say that they have found living species which have never been known before.Big-eyed fish, giant worms and sea-spiders "the size of dinner plates" have said to be included among these. Also included are a new species of plankton and jellyfish having tentacles up to 6 metres long. The scientists are amazed by their survival as the carbon concentration is pretty high there which results in difficulty in the growth of skeletons. The scientists however did hint that the climatic change could result in their extinction.

Sometimes, when I tell people I’m a travel writer, they ask if I studied journalism in college.
“No,” I answer. “I didn’t.” And I’m not really a journalist either. Journalism is a noble profession, but as a species of writing it’s sometimes hamstrung by its own rulebook.
Here’s an excerpt from one of my Cambodia notebooks:
Why I’m a travel writer, not a journalist. I can follow a hunch, record hearsay, call an asshole an asshole, make an impression of a place that will be true for me, to this experience, something deeper than a dossier of facts and smellier than a press room briefing: truth in color. You've got to go, you've got to see, you've got to piss people off - you've got to float down a Cambodian river, and feel the heat of the sun.
Enjoy the stories.

Jan Vermeer, a passionate Dutch Wildlife photographer, has made a special journey lately with the aim of capturing the emperor penguin in its natural habitat using the Nikon D300. We have obtained the exclusive rights for our German edition and we gladly refer you to the Nikon D300 test in practice made by Jan Vermeer. The Nikon D300 has recently become available and is receiving a lot of attention since then. And for a good reason listening to Jan's comments on the D300! Jan Vermeer has been shooting with the Nikon D2x for a while now but has to admit that the D300 has a lot to offer and that it turns out to be an ideal second body for the photographer he is for future projects. The Nikon D300 has been available since last November.Mark Petersmore : letsgodigital

Of Montreal makes music fun! The Band started with Kevin Barnes. He started recording his own lo-fi indie pop on a four-track. Friends were made along the way and the band was able to take off from there. They have had over 2 dozen releases, with their latest album titled "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?". Catchy bass lines, danceable beats, and lyrics that you find yourself repeating over & over uncontrollably in your mind. They have an indie pop style similar to Beck, or Cake with vocals that remind me of Ben Kweller. Of Montreal will be touring the U.S. until the end of November, and will be kicking off their U.K. tour in December.

China first time will going to send a robot that can work in ice in an Atractica expedit-ion. It is assumed that it will reduce the risk and cost in in scientific research. A report said that, the project will start on october 2007, will use a tank-like robot that can not only easily move through ice, but also fly through low-altitude. It's weight is about 200kg, and it can carry 40kg easily and can pull 100kg within working radius of 25km. It has a differential global positioning system (DGPS) and a meteorological observation device by which the robot can easily automatically stride across ice crevices and snowy slopes. According to the report, another robot, of 20kg and with a flying speed of50 to 100 km/hour will be there. It has an infra-red radiometer for observing ice on the sea and an aerial camera. The Chinese expedition team of 219 explorers will be in 2 seismic station in Antarctica to measure tremors and tectonic movements on the continent.

For a place in the world that has not been given much attention, Antarctica is now one of the critical places that global warming has hit. Additionally, the beauty that Antarctica once had has been diminishing by the day and a lot of this can be attributed to the growing pollution concerns both by air and water. There are living creatures that make Antarctica as well. Unfortunately, they are being threatened by the vices of nature today.
Antarctica is a good example of a once wonderful place on the brink of being demolished. Let us see some footage of what this little known place brings outside that of being among the polar caps of the world.

Antarctica is truly the last frontier. Its distance and inaccessibility easily lend itself to speculation and rumor. Beginning with enigmatic ancient maps, which some believe show the southern continent as it looks without ice and snow, its existence has remained shrouded in mystery as well as ice. Many theorize Atlantis is to be found there; Internet rumors claim there are satellite images which reveal an anomaly beneath the ice, replete with the concentric circles Plato wrote about, though I couldn’t find them. Not surprising; such a find would rock the scientific world in terms of the age of civilization. Some alternative researchers however do suggest that Antarctica used to lie in tropical regions before the last pole shift, and was the site of a flourishing ancient society.
Searches for “Antarctica anomaly” yielded a work of fiction some claim could be a disinformation campaign for what scientists have really discovered down there. Another involves Lake Vostok,
New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Tourism in the icy Antarctica continent seems to have become a prickly issue with India, which is hosting the ongoing Antarctica Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) here, vehemently opposed to it as against the treaty members.
Noted space scientist and chairman of the 30th ATCM, U.R. Rao said though the Antarctica Treaty talks about free access for all, yet tourism does not fit in that definition.
“Tourism is a real nuisance. Human intervention in the form of tourism is affecting the ecosystem of the continent and it must stop,” Rao told IANS on the sideline of the ATCM, hosted by India for the first time.
“Tourists litter the pristine surface, the ships break the ice and there are so many other issues. You just cannot overlook the matter, especially as the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) has pointed fingers towards human intervention as a major cause of global warming,” he said.

Marketing on the Internet continue to be expensive in both time and money. As many new sites keep popping up every day the competition keep rising. It is harder to attract a new visitor today than it was two years a go. So as an affiliate how can you save both time and money to maximize your profits?
First you must leverage your visitors. Your job as an affiliate should be to get that one visitor and use him/her as many times as possible. You just have to build a system that will lead a visitor from one page to another.

Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) was an Irish-born British explorer who tried to conquer Antarctica on several expeditions. During one failed attempt to reach the South Pole in 1908, Shakleton and his team built a hut on Ross Island and waited for nine months as temperatures dipped to -58 degrees.Part of what helped the crew pass the time was a stash of 12 cases of MacKinlay's Scotch, an Edinburgh distiller that had agreed a year earlier to serve as the expedition's official whisky supplier. After coming within 98 miles of reach their goal, the Shakleton expedition had to rush to leave Antarctica before the winter trapped them. The group left behind excess supplies in their haste to leave. Now a conservation team excavating ice from beneath Shackleton's hut has found two cases of the Scotch fully intact. The New Zealand-lead team decided to leave the whisky in the hut. One could only imagine what two cases of 100 year old Scotch might fetch at auction, especially with the historical s

There are times that defy explanation. Dreams blending into reality, space passing through milliseconds. I knew where I was and who was next to me but the reality of the moment is different than the reality of the wakeful. Yet wakefulness was there as well. Perhaps not.It was an odd occurrence. Form was taken by another, placement interchangeable. But everything was the same. Unable to even confirm the strangeness as far as I know. Maybe I was not where I thought I was. Or maybe I was but I changed the props between. Or maybe like in a Murakami novel pressing through a wall is not as difficult as I believed. It seemed right. A breath of difference made it so. Stranger would actually be if I was the only one to notice.
