Waiting for a table: Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and former Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia. "We should have gotten here earlier," quipped Abbas to a smiling Olmert.
The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) resuscitated the stalled Middle East peace process by agreeing to send a high level envoy to the recently initiated Annapolis, Maryland peace summit. The IHOP council reversed an earlier decision after Palestinian officials agreed to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel.
Mr. Timmerman, IHOP secretary:
Frankly, we were tied up with the whole Iran nukes thing, but the Ayatollah- we didn't deal with Ahmadinejad because of some hygiene issues- promised to give up the little buggers so we can run this Middle East thing up the flag pole. I will warn the parties to wrap this up quick because Turkey and Venezuela are getting colicy, and that Kim Jong what's his face [Il] is cruising for a diplomat

Without fancy introduction I do not put hopes on Annapolis at all , the Arabs will go there and return back with nothing simply sorry they give and return back with nothing Seriously I do not know why 16 Arab countries are going to attend the meeting , first the main countries in the meeting that will have direct talks are : Israel and the Palestinian authority representing only half of the Palestinian territories ,as the other half is under Hamas' rule, these Arab countries agreed to stick to the Arab initiative Saudi Arabia proposed in the Beirut Arab Summit 2002, the same initiative Israel refused totally so I do not know what the rest of the Arab countries other than Syria are going to do , they have no business what so ever there , as long as the Saudis swore that they won't shake hands with Israelis at least in front of the cameras And even Syria is going with lots of doubts that in any progress , they said that the Golan must be on the table if the Israelis want any Pe

Was bleibt also ?

Israelis across the country today protested Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's attendance at tomorrow's U.S.-sponsored Annapolis summit, blasting the Israeli leader for his expressed willingness to evacuate strategic territory, including possibly swaths of Jerusalem.
If Syria switched teams, from its current alignment with Iran to the U.S. aligned Arab states led by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the Gulf states, it would be a diplomatic masterstroke. It would isolate Iran and cut loose its key terrorist proxies: Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the lesser Damascus-based groups. If it could be done, it might even be worth paying Syria’s price - return of the Golan Heights and wiping the slate clean on past Syrian support for terrorism,...(read more)

With the announcement that Syria will send a delegate to Tuesday’s Israeli-Palestinian conference in Annapolis, the talks are taking on a greater degree of credibility. The dynamic character of events, however, has convinced me that making predictions is foolish. Instead, I’ll simply pose what I see as the five biggest questions looming over the conference:
1. Will the result of the talks be a plan or an agreement?
That is, will they, in keeping with the various other plans leaders have laid out (Oslo, the Road Map, etc.) lay out a set of conditions and goals intended to lead to the creation of a Palestinian state some time in the future (and thus minimizing the chances of that event ever occuring), or will they constitute an actual agreement to establish an indepenent, sovereign Palestinian state now?
2. What is the United States’ interest in these talks - improving Bush’s legacy or building peace in the Middle East?
As the Iraq Study Group Report suggested,
The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated a copy of a new communique from the Al-Fajr Media Center--Al-Qaida's official online logistical network--titled, "We'll Do It Again: Annapolis Shall Not Rescue Their Metropolis, Written by a Soldier in the Army Aiming to Destroy Their Metropolis." The statement condemned the upcoming Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in Annapolis, Maryland, as a bid to "declare war against the Muslims and to cleanse the desire for jihad from each and every believer."...(read more)

The bon ton in Israeli Left-Wing media is to mock Olmert for the Annapolis Summit, predicting that nothing will come of it. I can't think of any other summit in the history that was greeted with this degree of skepticism, and God knows there've been some more worthy of it (consider the Sharon-Abbas summit in Aqaba 2003 or the Wye River Accords of 1998). Yossi Beilin has gone as far as to warn of a possible ensuing outbreak of violence. Ramon is already lamenting the failure to seize the opportunity, disowning himself form any relation he had to the Annapolis Summit. For those studying Israeli politics it is not without consequence, and probably not a surprise either, that Ramon and Beilin are sharing the same position. However, it is worth noting that other oppositions for other reasons and from other stances have also been expressed (viz. Barak, Livni, though I doubt that they too truly share a common ground as some have portrayed it regarding the summit). One thing is clear: such re
Though I think it is a little too late to start making like they are worried about an Israeli/Palestinian peace accord now, it is encouraging that Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal has agreed to attend the hastily thrown together peace summit in Annapolis;Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations decided Friday to attend next week's US-sponsored Middle East peace conference, but the Saudi foreign minister insisted he would not allow "theatrics" like handshakes with Israeli officials, saying the gathering must make serious progress.Participation by Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal was a key goal of the United States to show strong Arab support for the conference in Annapolis, Maryland, which is to relaunch Israeli-Palestinian peace talks for the first time in seven years. Until Friday, the kingdom had balked at saying whether it would attend and at what level, seeking assurances Israel would negotiate the most difficult issues of the Arab-Israeli conflict in negotiations governed by
