International port (anchorage) city-limits , izmir
With the advantaged trading altitude accorded to foreigners in 1620 (the abominable capitulations that were afterwards to could cause a austere blackmail and setback for the Ottoman accompaniment in its decline), izmir set out on its way to become one of the foremost barter centers of the Empire. Foreign consulates confused in from Sakiz (Chios) [...]

On a four lane street downtown in front of Cal Worthington Ford

      Anchorage by Air
I flew into Anchorage at midnight on Sunday and took this picture as we came over Fire Island on the final approach. The night was a little darker than it should be with all those clouds--you can't even see the mountains because of them--but it gives you an idea of how bright it can be at midnight. The flight was uncommonly comfortable and relaxing and as a bonus I watched a DVD that I'd recommend

      Anchorage-Skagway-Whitehorse - Back Home
As much as I love traveling, I love getting home too (though I could easily have delayed the arrival home from New Zealand for another month or so ). The trip from Anchorage to Whitehorse yesterday was fairly complex, and not an itinerary you’ll find on any travel-agent database. From Anchorage to Juneau [...]

      On the Road - Anchorage
Rain, rain, go away - I don’t think I’ve seen it rain this much since I left Vancouver 20 years ago. Yesterday we came down from Denali to Anchorage - luckily the rain stopped for a bit while we were at the Iditarod headquarters at Wasilla so the puppies were cuddly, but this morning when [...]

      Arriving at Anchorage, Alaska
Well, this is pretty good. My parents said. Instead of going on Sunday, we decided to go to Alaska on Memorial Day. The airport is so empty. They said. The trip to Alaska includes a stop in Seattle, WA. So we drove to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, waited for a while, and then boarded to plane. Since the flight was very last-minute, my family got split up into different rows,

      Winterizing in Anchorage
Before I get into this week's list, which may or may not be exciting depending on how you feel about compost, I have to point out that I haven't done ANY of the items on this list. Why not? Well Lillian decided it was a good time to get sick and when she does sick, she does it good. Apparently the doctor believes she has viral meningitis, as opposed to bacterial meningitis which is the especially nasty kind, and she's been laid up for going on a week now. High fever, low spirits, highly contagious which means I've been stuck in the sick room nursing my baby and worrying until she shows signs of improvement--what are the chances she'll get better in time for me to go to Bouchercon this week? Two years I've waited to go to that conference and that's the week she decides to get sick.In an unrelated news item, and to the disillusionment of anyone who might have thought I had any kind of cool going on, here's a story for you: I was getting ready for bed two nights ago and was b

      Art in Anchorage, Alaska
Because Anchorage is a stopping spot between Asia and North America there's a larger arts and cultural element than you would normally find in a city this size. Here's a tour of my favorite pieces of outdoor art around town--things that beautify the city and make us look a little classier than we actually are. You can click on any photo to see it enlarged.1. Fishing poles. Located on the overpass on 15th Avenue downtown these fishing poles become hanging baskets each summer. Form following function--I love it!2. Wyland mural. Painted on the side of J.C. Penneys downtown it was created by Wyland who's chosen to do what has worked for Michaelangelo, Raphael and Cher and go by only his first name. He came to town as the first stop on his "Whaling Wall Tour" in 1994 (you can see the other murals here) so I'm including it for old time's sake. It's not really my style of art but my boys love the whales. For 500 bonus points, can you name the kind of whale? I'm the mother of

Anchorage Considering 10 Percent Tax on Alcohol
Anti-alcohol advocates in Anchorage, Alaska, say a 10 percent tax at the wholesale level on all alcohol sold in the city will help curb public drunkenness.A group headed by the former leader of the local Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter wants to get the tax on the ballot for the next election cycle. The group has already lined up the support of Mayor Mark Begich and other politicians. The group says the tax would raise $10 million to $12 million annually, which they claim would be directed to fund additional police and to help people with alcohol problems. The Anchorage Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailers Association says the tax is too high and they will fight the measure. The businesses have initiated several programs, including free rides home for people who have consumed too much alcohol.Anchorage voters rejected an 8 percent sales tax on alcohol in 1994 and 1995. An attempt to get a similar measure on the ballot in 2002 failed when supporters could not obtain enough signa

Need Some Help in Anchorage? Here Are My Picks
Anchorage is a nice size, big enough to find what you need, small enough to be familiar with what's available. For those who may find yourself in Anchorage someday (we get our share of tourists each summer) here is a list of some great goods and services I'd recommend:1. Need a sandwich shop? I'd recommend The Perfect Cup at the Dimond Center, I dream about their avocado/bacon sandwich--if ethnic food is your thing you should consider Milano's on Arctic and 36th, they have terrific gyros and steak and cheese sandwiches.2. Need a photographer? Stanton Photography, definitely the best. All of his pictures are beautiful.3. Need a restaurant? South Side Bistro on Huffman. I'd recommend the cream of sundried tomato soup with the chevre salad and the raspberry creme brulee for dessert and you could always order more and take it home . . .4. Need a dentist? James Nichols, D.D.S or Russell Morrell, D.D.S. I know over a dozen good dentists, but these two I'd highly recommend.5.

Chicks at the Imaginarium in Anchorage
What is it about babies that is so appealing? I'm not much of an animal person, they make me a little nervous, but even I'll admit that anything in baby form is adorable. Crocodiles, armadillos, rats, they're all cute when they're tiny.Lillian's been bugging me for a while to take her downtown to the Imaginarium so she could see the annual chick exhibit where children can hold the newly hatched chickens, learn about the wonders of nature and then bug their parents about letting them have a chicken for a pet.Not being Supermom, I put off the trip until one morning I realized that the exhibit might be gone because--I have it on good authority--chicks eventually grow up and become chickens. I was afraid we'd missed the chicks. But luck was with me and the minute we were through the doors Lillian pointed to the display you see pictured above and said, "MOM! LOOK! There's a mommy laying her eggs right now!" I hated to burst her bubble by telling her that no, that mommy loon was

You've come to appreciate the smell of break-up season and that lovely rotting-putrid smell that means spring is coming.7. You have at least one neighbor who owns more than three dogs.8. You think formal wear includes, but is not limited to, denim and flannel.9. Democrat or Republican, you'd open ANWR with your own backhoe if they'd just give you a chance.10.
