Third Amnesty. They seem to be picking up steam. Amazing ad by group DBB. Unsure if this is a one-shot ad, or if they are the new group behind Amensty International, responsible for all of the new advertisements that have been so well done. If not, kudos to the ad/marketing group. If so, this is starting to remind me of when Chiat/Day seemed to hit it's peak about 4 years ago.

L'acqua che scende dall'alto è limpida. Un fiotto compatto. Inesorabile. AP Photographer Granted Iraqi Amnesty By Robert H. Reid Associated Press BAGHDAD (AP) — An Iraqi judicial committee has dismissed terrorism-related allegations against Associated Press photographer Bilal Hussein and ordered him released nearly two years after he was detained by the U.S. military. Hussein, 36, remained in custody Wednesday at Camp Cropper, a U.S. detention facility near Baghdad's airport. A decision by a four-judge panel said Hussein's case falls under a new amnesty law. It ordered Iraqi courts to "cease legal proceedings" and ruled that Hussein should be "immediately" released unless other accusatio
David Cameron has weighed in to the London Mayoral contest by effectively trying to silence Boris Johnson, the Conservative contender, on matters of immigration. Johnson said that he thought it would benefit the capital if illegal migrants were offered a one-off pardon. Cameron thinks this would just let others think they can come into the country illegally leading to demands for further amnesties. Both sides have a point. The truth is, though, that we don't have total control over immigration now that the EU gets its 90 cents worth of nose-poking into the issue. Immigrants are required for our economy, because a lot of people won't work in the places and for the pay that the migrants are prepared to. The government is going some way to relieving the problem of unabated, unregulated immigra

Per Jon Swift, I learned that this weekend is the Second Annual Blogroll Amnesty Day. The first such day occured prior to my foray into the blogosphere, so it's not my place to explain the circumstances behind this event, other than to say that it is a day/weekend for left-of-center blogs to open their blogrolls up to all comers and give some blog-love to their smaller counterparts. In any event, the modest success I've had on this blog the last few months has been far more than I ever thought I'd have. Much of that success has been due to the liberal policies of other blogs, and to the surprising amount of blog-love they send my way by linking to my posts on a semi-frequent basis. Without their assistance, I doubt this blog would have ever gotten more than a few dozen hits a day.In particu

This blog focuses on home exchange and I try not to stray off topic too often. However, today is a special day for bloggers around the world, a day when many will be publishing posts about abuse in all it's terrible forms - from domestic violence, cruelty to animals, school bullying, prisoners detained without fair trials, in fact, to abuses of all kinds.
This day, when bloggers are uniting to draw attention to abuse, came about from a call for joint action a few weeks ago on the discussion board of BlogCatalog, a social blog directory. Bloggers Against Abuse September 27th, 2007 snowballed as the idea was forwarded to many others in the vast blogging community worldwide.
Every blogger will have their reasons for focusing on a particular form of abuse today, some no doubt from painful personal experiences, others from a concern for a local or widespread abuse that has particularly affected them.
I would like to draw attention to the work of Amnesty International. I have sign
When I first saw these ads, I didn’t know much about Amnesty International and their mission in the world. After some digging I’ve learned that the Amnesty focus on five key areas: Women’s Rights, Children’s Rights, Ending Torture and Execution, Rights of Refugees and Rights of Prisoners of Conscience. Their primary mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

Once again we find ourselves in the Political Party conference season. This week finds the Liberal-Democrat Party on a charabanc trip to Brighton for their annual beano-by-the-sea, and I feel that it will be particularly memorable for producing one of the most ridiculous ideas I have heard in many years. Party spokesperson Nick Clegg has announced plans to allow illegal immigrants in Britain who have been here for ten years or more the opportunity to come clean and apply for citizenship. That of course is providing that they can prove that they have been in Britain for ten years, that they are fluent in the lingo, and that they have no criminal record!Anybody entering a country illegally is committing a crime and is entitled to a free membership of the "Illegal League" with immediate effect, and anyone who has managed to stay under the radar for ten years is going to have committed a lot of other crimes along the way. If they have a genuine reason for being in this country they would h

This relates to an earlier story about the dispute between Amnesty International and the Catholic Church. The Vatican urged Catholics to stop donating to Amnesty on the basis that Amnesty does not see the criminalization of women who choose to abort their pregnancy as a productive policy.
Ms Gilmore, Amnesty’s Deputy Secretary General in an earlier interview stated:
“We are saying broadly that to criminalise women’s management of their sexual reproductive right is the wrong answer.”
The full response to the Vatican can be found here. In it they say:
“Amnesty International’s position is not for abortion as a right but for women’s human rights to be free of fear, threat and coercion as they manage all consequences of rape and other grave human rights violations.”
Amnesty chairman Paolo Pobbiati insisted its new position had been misinterpreted by Vatican:
“It was partly inspired by our experience in Africa where soldiers rape women in communities they attack
Amnesty International (AI) has confirmed that it has dropped it’s neutral policy in regards to abortion and now supports access to abortion services as a human right. The pro-”lifers” aren’t happy about it. In fact, the right reverend Michael Evans has resigned because it’s not right when a human rights group quits being “neutral” about the rights of women.
The Vatican has started it’s smear campaign and is threatening a worldwide boycott of AI. Of course, the Vatican isn’t as stupid as some of us like to believe or hope. The official policy is, more or less, to support the decriminalization of abortion and not much else from what I can tell from the press releases. The Vatican has to know due to it’s decades long assault on reproductive freedom for women that AI is going to find out that decriminalization isn’t good enough when you’re dealing with laws such as the ones in America.
The fact of the matter is

We need everyone lighting up the DC phone lines and voice mails TONIGHT and THURSDAY, with an urgent message.
“Senator _______, do NOT allow any immigration legislation to be added to other bills! We are watching and these measures have already been defeated and should not be placed into law in sneaky ways!
