By Andrew Cawthorne Reuters, NAIROBI (Apr 23 2008) - Amnesty International accused Ethiopian soldiers on Wednesday of killing 21 people, including an imam and several Islamic scholars, at a Mogadishu mosque and said seven of the victims had their throats slit. The rights group said the soldiers had also captured dozens of children during the raid on the Al Hidaaya mosque in the north of the Somali capital earlier this week during operations against Islamist insurgents.Ethiopia has thousands of soldiers in neighbouring Somalia to bolster a Western-backed government against rebels fighting an Iraq-style insurgency in the Horn of Africa nation. The Ethiopian and Somali governments have not responded publicly to accusations of atrocities at the mosque. Amnesty International's Waterboarding Ad
Wasn't there a time in the past when other countries used to be condemned for resorting to barbaric acts? How did we ever get to this point?

Amnesty says torture widespread in Indonesia
Torture and other human rights abuses are still widespread in Indonesia 10 years after the fall of dictator Suharto, Amnesty International says.Though the government ratified the UN Convention Against Torture and instituted key legal reforms after Suharto's demise, Amnesty receives reports of abuse "on a regular basis," according to a briefing paper by the rights group."As of early 2008, old and new national laws continue to offer inadequate safeguards to deter the use of torture and ill-treatment in all circumstances," the report says."This context of widespread use of torture and other ill-treatment is aggravated and supported by a pattern of impunity throughout the country, which can be perceived by perpetrators as giving them license to continue violating human rights."Indonesia News B

AP photographer Bilal Hussein granted amnesty
Bilal HusseinThe only problem with this bit of news is that the US military doesn't answer to the Iraqi judicial system. They can hold Bilal Hussein as long as they please. AP Photographer Granted Iraqi Amnesty By Robert H. Reid Associated Press BAGHDAD (AP) — An Iraqi judicial committee has dismissed terrorism-related allegations against Associated Press photographer Bilal Hussein and ordered him released nearly two years after he was detained by the U.S. military. Hussein, 36, remained in custody Wednesday at Camp Cropper, a U.S. detention facility near Baghdad's airport. A decision by a four-judge panel said Hussein's case falls under a new amnesty law. It ordered Iraqi courts to "cease legal proceedings" and ruled that Hussein should be "immediately" released unless other accusatio

Cameron slaps down Boris over illegal immigrant amnesty remark
David Cameron has weighed in to the London Mayoral contest by effectively trying to silence Boris Johnson, the Conservative contender, on matters of immigration. Johnson said that he thought it would benefit the capital if illegal migrants were offered a one-off pardon. Cameron thinks this would just let others think they can come into the country illegally leading to demands for further amnesties. Both sides have a point. The truth is, though, that we don't have total control over immigration now that the EU gets its 90 cents worth of nose-poking into the issue. Immigrants are required for our economy, because a lot of people won't work in the places and for the pay that the migrants are prepared to. The government is going some way to relieving the problem of unabated, unregulated immigra

      Amnesty, Abortion and Acid: Redux

Later Novak reported in a column that an unnamed democratic senator had talked to him about McGovern. "The people don’t know... Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's offers Amnesty Program
Only 300 so far have availed of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's offer of amnesty to erring public utility drivers, with only a few days left to the amnesty program.MMDA Traffic Operations Center Director Angelito Vergel de Dios said on Sunday he was a bit surprised at the low turnout, but added that he expected the figure to go up by the end of the month."We expected at least 1,000 drivers with outstanding traffic fines but we have a week to go. There's still time for the other drivers to apply for amnesty until March 28," he said in a phone interview.Earlier this month, the MMDA announced that it would be granting amnesty to drivers of passenger jeepneys, buses and taxis with unpaid traffic fines dating back to 1995 until Feb. 13 this year. Those who want to avail of the of

      Concluding Blogroll Amnesty Day
All weekend, I've been linking to other small blogs in honor of today's Blogroll Amnesty Day. There are still a couple more blogs from my blogroll to which I want to give some special attention, but which I was unable to give full posts this weekend. Below are a couple of recommended posts from those blogs. If there is anyone else on my blogroll who would like to have a post added to this list, let me know. For the record, not all of these blogs are smaller than me, and one or two are even substantially larger than me. Blogroll Amnesty Day
Per Jon Swift, I learned that this weekend is the Second Annual Blogroll Amnesty Day. The first such day occured prior to my foray into the blogosphere, so it's not my place to explain the circumstances behind this event, other than to say that it is a day/weekend for left-of-center blogs to open their blogrolls up to all comers and give some blog-love to their smaller counterparts. In any event, the modest success I've had on this blog the last few months has been far more than I ever thought I'd have. Much of that success has been due to the liberal policies of other blogs, and to the surprising amount of blog-love they send my way by linking to my posts on a semi-frequent basis. Without their assistance, I doubt this blog would have ever gotten more than a few dozen hits a day.In particu
