"After the Olympic Games, the fight for human rights must go on."Extremely powerful and moving ads from the advertising agency TBWA out of Paris, France and art director Philippe Taroux. L'acqua che scende dall'alto è limpida. Un fiotto compatto. Inesorabile.
Today the human rights organisation Amnesty International has published the number of people in 2007 that were executed. At least 1,250 were killed, while over 3,340 are still waiting to recieve their death sentence.Top of the grim list was China, where 470 were executed. Then came Iran (317), followed by Saudi Arabia (143), Pakistan (135), and then the United States of America (42).Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said:Yet again China has executed more people than any country in the world and even now, in Olympics year, China is secretly executing people after unfair trials and alleged torture.Last year also saw the first ever UN resolution in favour of a global moratorium on executions. It was voted through by over 100 nations.Amnesty International blog on this topic

I don't actually read USA Today, but I found this just browsing around on ThinkProgress today. It's a full-page ad that Amnesty International placed in the paper. I think the picture is phenomenal.
The purpose of the ad is to commemorate the one year anniversary of the Military Comissions Act, which essentially removed the right of habeas corpus. The bill was passed under the guise of "protecting us from terrorism". In reality they're just eroding the protections that many people have fought and died for...

This blog focuses on home exchange and I try not to stray off topic too often. However, today is a special day for bloggers around the world, a day when many will be publishing posts about abuse in all it's terrible forms - from domestic violence, cruelty to animals, school bullying, prisoners detained without fair trials, in fact, to abuses of all kinds.
This day, when bloggers are uniting to draw attention to abuse, came about from a call for joint action a few weeks ago on the discussion board of BlogCatalog, a social blog directory. Bloggers Against Abuse September 27th, 2007 snowballed as the idea was forwarded to many others in the vast blogging community worldwide.
Every blogger will have their reasons for focusing on a particular form of abuse today, some no doubt from painful personal experiences, others from a concern for a local or widespread abuse that has particularly affected them.
I would like to draw attention to the work of Amnesty International. I have sign
When I first saw these ads, I didn’t know much about Amnesty International and their mission in the world. After some digging I’ve learned that the Amnesty focus on five key areas: Women’s Rights, Children’s Rights, Ending Torture and Execution, Rights of Refugees and Rights of Prisoners of Conscience. Their primary mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

Amnesty International (AI) has confirmed that it has dropped it’s neutral policy in regards to abortion and now supports access to abortion services as a human right. The pro-”lifers” aren’t happy about it. In fact, the right reverend Michael Evans has resigned because it’s not right when a human rights group quits being “neutral” about the rights of women.
The Vatican has started it’s smear campaign and is threatening a worldwide boycott of AI. Of course, the Vatican isn’t as stupid as some of us like to believe or hope. The official policy is, more or less, to support the decriminalization of abortion and not much else from what I can tell from the press releases. The Vatican has to know due to it’s decades long assault on reproductive freedom for women that AI is going to find out that decriminalization isn’t good enough when you’re dealing with laws such as the ones in America.

Amnesty International has issued a "Call to Bloggers', asking them to get online and stand up for freedom of expression on the internet. The organisation says this is a critical time when fundamental rights - particularly freedom of expression and privacy - are under threat from governments that want to control what their citizens say, and what information they can access.
The call comes as the online world prepares to meet at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF, Athens 30/10 - 2/11) to discuss the future of the internet. Amnesty released a statement to the IGF today and is sending a delegation to ensure that human rights are not sidelined and remain at the heart of the forum's discussions.
Amnesty's International’s statement also coincides with an urgent appeal on behalf of a blogger in Iran who was detained this month. Kianoosh Sanjari was arrested earlier this month while reporting on clashes between security forces and supporters of Shi’a cleric Ayatollah
