John Amaechi Is Already Having An Effect
First soccer officials decide that the conditions in some of Italy's stadiums are not fit for fans so they decide to play games in front of empty seats. Understandable considering a police officer was killed in the melee at a recent game. But now, soccer officials in England have just gone too far. 'Homophobic chanting' to be banned at English football grounds (Press Association) Homophobic

      John Amaechi
John Amaechi would have to be one of the legends in basket ball... gee he's been doing it long enough, and then coming professionally later on in his career would be a step in the right direction."I am not a hero nor am I special in any regard," Amaechi told ESPN in his first television interview. "I am simply doing what a good person of conscience would do, which is making people aware that gay people don't just look like Jack from 'Will and Grace,' and that they don't want to jump your bones every occasion and that some are camp and some are butch and that we're different and we're useful and we are here."The beauty of John Amaechi is that he makes a good role model for young people... there's not many of those around. more // ABC Foundation // NBA stats

Thoughts on John Amaechi and American Sporting Society
As we all know, former NBA player John Amaechi announced to the world he was gay to the world, a few days before his book, "Man in the Middle' is due to come out. This week, he's gotten more than enough press via the television, in print, and on the internet via news sites and blogs. The question is, are we in the United States ready for an athlete in a team sport to come "out of the closet' and announce that they are homosexual? In the past, athletes who announced to the world their homosexuality as a member of a team sport have been retired. No active player in a team sport has come out of the closet. The only prominent athletes who have come out and announced their homosexuality have been from individual sports, such as Martina Navratilova who played tennis, Greg Louganis who was a diver, and Rudy Galindo who is a figure skater.A lot of the reaction to Amaechi's announcement has been all across the board. Here are some of the quotes I have found around the web."I haven't b

      Amaechi Replys!
I love Amaechi, how he has replied to Hardaway's comments, he's wise. Why is it that professional sportsman and woman have such a problem. Aren't they meant to be actually professional, from Hardaway's comments he's hardly that. The following is Amaechi's response to Hardaway.Amaechi added: "His words pollute the atmosphere. It creates an atmosphere that allows young gays and lesbians to be harassed in school, creates an atmosphere where in 33 states you can lose your job, and where anti-gay and lesbian issues are used for political gain. It's an atmosphere that hurts all of us, not just gay people. Famously, they're saying in 2007 that homophobia is not an issue. While (Hardaway) is not a representative of the NBA or of straight men, there's no point pretending it's not an opinion that is out there."Amaechi also spoke to Dan Le Batarad (the host of the show on which Hardaway spewed his hate) at the Miami Herald on Wednesday evening saying that Hardaway's comments open a

John Amaechi Comes Out of the Closet
Former NBA center John Amaechi, who played for Orlando, Utah and Cleveland in his NBA career that ended in 2004, will publicly come out as a gay man in his new autobiography, Man in the Middle. With his pronouncement, Amaechi becomes arguably the most visible male athlete to come out to date.Amaechi was never a star in his brief NBA career, but he is a name that NBA fans will recognize - he was a key contributor to some overachieving Orlando teams back in the Doc Rivers era some 5 years ago. And his name is one that is known on two continents: in addition to the United States, the native Brit is well-known in the UK.The first thing that I thought of when I heard this news is that we're still nowhere close to the point where an athlete in a major professional league could openly declare his homosexuality in the middle of his career. It's no secret that in the NBA, as is the case in any sport really, intolerance of homosexuality is rampant. I don't need to be an NBA insider to know th
