Via Overheard, the blog at Park Cities People, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and former Texas Railroad Commissioner Tony Garza will be named a Distinguished Alumnus of Southern Methodist University:
International and civic leaders, a former athlete turned dentist and an emerging Broadway star will receive the Southern Methodist University Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor the university bestows upon its graduates.
The 2007 recipients include Linda Pitts Custard, James B. Gardner, the Honorable Antonio O. Garza Jr. and Rick Herrscher. Nathan H. Allen will receive the Emerging Leader Award, which recognizes an outstanding alumnus or alumna who has graduated within the last 15 years. The Distinguished Alumni Award banquet and ceremony is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Fairmont Hotel, 1717 N. Akard St.
I expect the Garza announcement will be somewhat controversial, for various reasons–including but not limited to Bush’s obvious Garza ties and the ongoing Bush L

I got this email earlier this summer about receiving an award from my undergraduate college, LaGrange College. I was to be included on the wall of outstanding alumni. I had never heard of the wall and I did not think it was that big of a deal. When the college then sent me a packet of stuff to fill out and addresses to send out invitations to friends and family, they needed a specific kind of black and white photo, and shared the details of the ceremony I realized it was a big deal. This past Saturday my family and got it together and drove down to LaGrange to receive the award during the homecoming celebration. My Mom and Dad drove 8 hours round-trip just for a 4 hour visit in Lagrange, I'm truly loved! Here are some highlights in pictures.President Stuart Gulley presenting to me the award of outstanding Alumni. Five others got the same award. President Gulley said I was one the the youngest recipients ever. This is the framed print I received. On the back they put the oratory that the
There is news today that over seven thousand former students of the University of Cincinnati were affected in a data breach. A flash drive with sensitive information on 7366 students and graduates was stolen from an employee’s desk.
One of the people interviewed for the article, Cybil Pearson, stated that she had not been at the University of Cincinnati since 1997, so this is a surprising and annoying development for her. Like many people entering their thirties, she’s probably in a state where she monitors her credit carefully as her carrier takes off and she begins to have several opportunities for investing assets, be it a new home or otherwise. If somebody were to take over her identity, it will be a huge setback for her. Trying to get things straightened out would not be easy, as detailed numerous times in the media.
One might wonder, why is a university hanging on to this information in years after graduation? In many ways, purging information o
Today I had the chance to take my two boys to a Red Sox Illumni vs the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Officers Association in a softball game for charity. We saw Bob Stanley, Oil Can Boyd, Rick Wise, and other Red Sox players that I grew up watching. Of course my boys didn’t know too much about these players, but they were excited to go to this event.
We had a great time. There was a guy on the PA system doing play by play of the game and it was fun watching the players interact with the people in attendance and the other players.
Behind the home plate area and next to the concession stand I was surprised to see that they had a booth set up for the National Guard. They were giving away free stuff like pens, mousepads, and keychains. The public was invited to talk to them about a career in the national guard. There were four to five members of the Guard behind the booth to answer questions from anyone interested.
As I watched the game with my boys I kept turning my
Two days ago, I visited my third year Filipino teacher. Word quickly spread that she was confined somewhere in Manila due to her long-standing heart condition. The pathology was first diagnosed back in 2000 after consulting her physician due to easy fatiguability and slight dyspnea (difficulty in breathing). Apparently, it wasn’t an acute disease process. My teacher had rheumatic heart disease and her mitral valve (the bicuspid valve) was already damaged (stenosis AND regurgitation). She probably got it as a young girl and the symptoms only revealed themselves shortly after she turned 40.
The other members of the faculty tried to help her by organizing a raffle to raise funds for her mitral valve replacement. Though the effort was largely successful, she had her qualms about going under the knife.
Early this week, she had a hard time breathing. Her family brought her to the Emergnecy Room of PGH. Fortunately, she’s doing much better now thanks to the superb
Yahoo is testing a new job based social network "Kickstart" which aims to connect college students with alumni at the companies that they are interested in a very powerful concept i can say this because alums are the best way to know about the jobs that you are interested in and Kickstart also provides a chance for alums to do something for the college they passed out from.Overall look of Kickstart seems very professional and Linkedin type however Kickstart is still in concept stage and they are still testing Kickstart in universities. Kickstart is a very solid concept and a game changer all those job websites and social networks like our own techtribe, ndtv jobs and minglebox must sit up and take notice. Kickstart is quite a concept and when backed by yahoo can seriously change job networking this is a direct threat to linkedin.A detailed review of Yahoo Kickstart is available at News.com
After the alumni magazine entry and your responses I have decided to create a meme. Can one do that? Just create a meme? Or is there some meme committee that needs to be consulted?
Write two versions of a blurb to your high school or college alumni magazine. (If your school doesn’t have one, fake it. It’s just a genre.) The first should be the perky kind you always actually read in these things and the second version, well, less perky and more brutally honest.
Tag people.
Link to this post and give me credit for my brilliant meme. Then, of course, if the meme committee gets their noses out of joint that they weren’t consulted, they’ll know where to find me.
