Did I tell you all that I'm a DT of Pandora Willow Tree as well? It's actually a very newly opened online store by a friend of mine. It will be one of the first to carry magnolia stamps in the States. Here's another project that I've created for Pandora Willow Tree and the magnolia is a stamped image from a great friend of mine! Thanks Ying! (I'm actually still waiting for the first batch of magno
What do the US, Oman, Indonesia, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates have in common?Well, nothing, apart from a legal drinking age of 21, the highest in the world. To put it another way, the US is the only non-Muslim country we're aware of (though in some parts of the Ukraine, they enforce the age of 21 though by all accounts it's roundly ignored) where to consume a beer, you must be old enough t
Fancy a bit of altering?I enjoy doing altered art because it uses everyday items that would otherwise end up in the bin and challenges me to come up with incorporating multimedia techniques into the finished article. This bit of art was done as part of a swap between members of UK Stampers Forum. The swap was to alter a 'Pringles' container. I chose one of the small snack size containers this time
Have you ever taken a photo that was just captured the essence of who your child is, only to discover that some of the elements in the photo were less than desirable?
Take this photo of my youngest child, for instance. I snapped this one day because I had just pulled her hair up into the first set...

Here is a slide mailer I have recently done as a swap on UK Stampers Forum I have used a number of stamps to complete the project, a couple of flourishes, a 4 face stamp, a pensive lady, eyes stamps and a couple of sentiments ( follow your heart & discover). All have been stamped in black stazon except the discover sentiment which is in sepia Versafine ink. The background colour was made by
Researchers have created ‘living computers’ by genetically altering bacteria. The research demonstrates that computing in living cells is feasible, opening the door to a number of applications including data storage and as a tool for manipulating genes for genetic engineering. Stressful life events are known to be associated with flares of both inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) but the mechanism has been unknown. Accumulating research indicate mucosal mast cells are involved in the process through release of chemical mediators that increase gut permeability (leaky gut), cause increase intestinal contractions (cramps), increase fluid secretion (diarrhea), and inflammation of the intestine. The latter not only results in a vicious cycle of increased leaky gut allowing food and microbe proteins through the bowel wall but may trigger a chronic autoimmune or immune inflammatory process in the presence of the right genetics. Animal studies with mice have shown increased colon paracellular permeability (CPP) from stress. The mechanis

A Senate bill originally designed to combat use of human growth hormone by athletes and celebrities has been altered in recent weeks to protect another group: children who use HGH to counter growth deficiencies.Senators Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, have dropped language in the bill that would have put HGH on the same legal plane as anabolic steroids, a move that would have severely limited access to the synthetic hormone. For example, under the bill's original language, HGH would not have been widely available through the mail and would not have been available in longer than six-month supplies. Because doctors specializing in childhood growth disorders often are far from patients, such controls could have caused hardship for families with children using the drug."We'

Here is another altered double slide mailer I have completed.I gave the whole of the outside a coat of pale green acrylic paint and once dry gave the whole of the inside a coat of Lumiere metallic in Citrine. Once dry I stamped the front with an Intaglio stamp from Stewart Gill in Lime and Moss Green Chalk Ink. Using a very small leaf stamp I used Versamark and metallic emerald green Embossing Powder which I melted with a heat tool. The inside front was embellished with two self adhesive dye cut 3D roses. The slide holder frames were stamped with another small flower stamp in Olive Green Stazon. All the edges of the slide holder were then finished in dark metallic green marker as a contrast. The slides were made from a single glass slide in each case which was stamped with leaf stamps and a
Inflammation is a hot topic in medical research, with studies showing links to heart disease, dementia and longevity. Depression is a relatively new addition to the list of inflammation-associated diseases, with two recent publications demonstrating altered levels of inflammatory molecules in the blood of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Both studies evaluated the levels [...]
Well I have been quiet for a while again. Actually have had little time to craft but now I have finished my first altered 'Pringles' container.I first prepared the contained by giving it two coats of white gesso, allowing to dry between coats.I used two rubber stamps, one of a rose and the other of a decorative heart and stamped both onto pink tissue with black and blazing red Stazon ink. Once dry I tore the tissue around the stamped images in a random fashion and then adhered this to the gessoed surface of the container with matt paper Mod Podge. I applied ModPodge to the container first and then adhered the tissue with another layer. Some of the layers overlapped producing a pleasing darker shade of pink from the tissue. Also there is some texture produced by not totally flattening the s

I COULD BE HAPPY(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" DANCE MIX) Altered Images were a Scottish new wave band whose members were ex-school friends with an equal interest in the UK post-punk scene. After being championed by legendary DJ John Peel, they quickly garnered enough attention to be offered a deal with Epic Records, but mainstream success was not immediate; their first two singles failed to reach the top 40.After the band's 1981 success of their first album, Happy Birthday, and an equally successful tour, they released their 1982 album Pinky Blue. The album showed them following a more pop route. The lead off single, I Could Be Happy, went to #7 in the UK with the album reaching #12, making it more successful than their previous effort. Despite this success many critics who supported them previou
Here is a double slide mailer, (4inches x 3inches) that I have altered. The slide mailer was covered with gold leaf on the outside and decorated on the inside. The front panel was made separately with board and distress inks with a central panel rubber stamped and heat embossed with marquesite EP. Three gold beads were added with glossy accents and two die cut flowers, painted first in copper acrylic paint with glitter glue added and wrapped with copper craft wire. The inside front was covered with printed paper (basic grey) and a roman sculpture image (Crafty Individuals) was added before sealing with mod podge matt. This was then overstamped with a swirl border stamp in black Stazon and the word 'Treasure' in black cherry Stazon. The other side was coloured with Adirondak raisin ink and

Here's Mark Hebert's story on the audit of writing portfolios from Wednesday: (WHAS11) - An audit of last year’s CATS test has found that nearly half the student’s scores on the writing portfolios were inflated. Critics of the CATS test say that’s proof that the whole test needs to be dumped or at the very least, the writing portfolios need to go. But some teachers say that would be a bad idea......A state senate bill that would abolish the CATS test has virtually no chance of passing the house and would face a veto by Governor Beshear if it ever got to his desk.Video here.

Hmm.... I was inspired to make this yesterday, due to my desperate desire to use up the felt scraps. I cut out circles from different coloured felt scraps, sewed them onto a piece of black felt. Then, I embellished the piece with beads, sequins, a vintage button and a plastic monkey. :DThe whole embellished piece of felt was then glued to the tin with sepcial fabric-metal glue. I'm not sure if I mentioned it before here. I got this glue from Kinokuniya at RM13+. It's a large tube, around 100-150g. Made in Japan. Works wonders. :DThe back-side of the tin where the ends of the black felt piece meets is covered with red velvety fabric tape, the same one which I used for the recycled bags. Kept it simple, because I want it to be able to be personalised - you can stick on a name-tag, laminated photo, the like. It is intended as a keepsake box. :) Put in la whatever is dear to you. :)

This is my latest project. Altering wooden snowflakes! A friend of mine is so kind to send me two of the wooden snowflakes for me to experiment with it. I've actually not much experience in altering but these wooden snowflakes are so much fun and would love to make something out of it to decorate my Christmas tree this year. If attached pattern paper to both snowflakes after I've stamped and doodled on them. For the first red snowflake, there are actually three layers. I've stamped a floral stamp on a card stock and cut it out for the second layer. I've add some doodling on it too. As for the third layer, I've hand drawn a snowflake on a white card stock and cut it out. I've added some blings on it to give some sparkle effect to it. I've used some of my favourite photographs to attached from the back of the second layer. The second brown snowflakes has three layers too. The second layer is a long legged star where I've cut out from a card stock. The third layer is a fold in fo
Anyone who reads Flavorpill’s NY version, would have seen a photo today of a man’s face covered in Chinese calligraphy as its banner. The man in the image and the artist himself is Zhang Huan. Hailing from Anyang, Henen, China, Huan works in almost all medium; classically trained in painting, he also does photography and sculpture but is best known for his performance art. Fifty-five of his pieces are currently on show at the Asia Society in an exhibit called Zhang Huan: Altered States that will continue through January. I highly suggest you check him out.In the vein of most performance artists Huan is known for nudity in almost all of his works and masochistic acts in many of them. While these two things are nothing new, there is a certain bravery and fragility about his performance work that I don’t commonly feel when seeing someone lacerate themselves on a block of ice or something along those lines. While some of it is based upon a visceral reaction to the art alone, I will be
This is an altered puzzle addresses that I've made for a COF that I'm in. For more explanations on the how-to, you can refer to "Altering Puzzles" in my tips and tricks section. As I'm all about stamping, I've stamped each piece with a different stamp. These twelve stamps are my favourite at the moment. I've decorated each pieces with some sequins and flowers for some. I've also used bubble stickers and crafting foams on some of the pieces.
If you thought you was a dedicated gamer then you should check out the mice in the above photo, gaming old school style.
Jokes aside this is a subject that a lot of people are not happy with as scientists at Johns Hopkins University have been playing with the DNA of lab mice egg cells.
They have genetically engineered the mice to give them a mental illness (SCHIZOPHRENIA) which they hope will help humans.
Feel free to comment on this mental illness and the way they are studying it.

(I didn't want to mention Photoshop in the title, just in case you want to use another graphics program). But here it is: A simple, but not too simple, image that we can use to flex our creativity muscles.Copy the image or open it with your program (I'll be using Photoshop), and do something with it... anything goes. I've left the image as is, it's large and has a high resolution, so feel free to alter the size as well to fit your needs and your computer's capabilities. Most importantly, try to remember (or write down, Rima) the steps, so we can appreciate the final result even more. Minimum alteration: 4 steps! Comments and critique are part of the deal - it will help us all get comfortable with this medium, and see things from different perspectives. Post the results on your blog or send it to me at rima@marayagalleries.com and I'll post it here instead (or as well). It would be nice if we could put them all side by side on one page on the Gallery website too - let me know what
On most evenings on a leafy street in the Indonesian capital's exclusive Menteng district, a running television set can be seen through the huge bay window of the biggest house on the block. Inside sits former President Suharto, who once saved Indonesia from an armed Communist takeover in 1965 but whose ultimate legacy is a mixed bag of massive economic growth, human rights abuses and corruption. While his rise to power was subtle and crafty, his downfall three decades later was sudden and violent.'It was a critical factor why we could bring him down,' said Jusuf Wanandi, vice chairman of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. 'With 8 or 9 per cent [annual] economic growth, despite the corruption, Suharto was able to co-opt the elite. With the financial crisis, he could not fulfil that, so we had a better chance to get rid of him.'

I love hols because I have countless time to use as I please. But the drawback of it is, everything I planned to do was finished quickly, leaving me quite aimless and at lost of how to occupy myself with the remaining time. However, the realization that holidays are not forever and this one is coming to an end in just 3 weeks, pushed me forward to produce more crafts and what-not. I want to make full use of the free time granted to me at the moment - to do anything I want, without having to worry about lab practicals and class tests. This afternoon, I decided that I should clear out extras from my kawaii collection, while making some $$ at that. I made a felt cover for an Altoids tin (washed and sun-dried, so no cleanliness issues!), with the usual bling and bejeweled look. The theme is SUSHI~{Click on the pictures to view the listing on Etsy}The cover is very firmly glued to the tin top. The 'California Roll' tag is actually from a sushi fabric designed by Robert Kaufman. I bought a y
Wait.. I forgot what I was going to say But hell it’s really been a long day And I have a lot of bills to pay And I can’t be expected to be on all day. We don’t use all of our brain Is that what they say? That’s not my brain’s way I use all of it everyday. So excuse me if I forgot you today I meet a lot of people every day And I don’t always know what to say After the work day burns through my head And makes it sometimes play dead To recharge for more days of work ahead. And don’t mind if I forgot what to say I live in the electrical internet world each day And I have really too much to say To worry about any particular day When my brain had too much to pay And I forgot what I was going to say. It could be the whiskey I drank today I enjoyed drinking that all day That has gotten in the way Of what I was going to say. Or maybe it’s the haze Created by a mary jane daze Can’t remember what I said Is this something to care about
Scottish new wavers Altered Images formed in early 1979, consisting of vocalist Clare Grogan, guitarist Tony McDaid, drummer Tich Anderson, and bassist Johnny McElhone. The teenagers cut a demo and sent it to Siouxsie and the Banshees, who were impressed enough to have the band open for them for several dates in support of their Kaleidoscope record. Two impressive BBC Peel Sessions helped the band land a contract with Epic. The Banshees' Steve Severin took them under his wing, producing their first two singles. Though both didn't do well, "Dead Pop Stars" gained controversy for its release shortly after the assassination of John Lennon. (The song was recorded prior to his death.) Both singles were striking for their dark post-punk leanings, which oddly went well with Grogan's youthful, chirpy voice. (See Cranes for another example of this juxtaposition.) Severin continued to help the band with their first full-length, but the label brought in Martin Rushent, who would help the band
Again inspired by a class on UK Stampers Forum I used one of Marks & Spencers Curiously Strong Mint Tins as a base for this creation. I rubbed the tin down well with fine sandpaper and then coated with white gesso and allowed to dry. I then used colonial green acrylic paint (DecoArt) and applied with a natural sponge and allowed to dry. I then stippled with Adirondack dye inks in bottle and oregano and dried thoroughly with a heat gun. In the meantime I stamped some leaves from the See D's leaf set in black Stazon on white tissue paper and then hand coloured with Lyra Aquacolor crayons and a water brush (drying with a blast from the heat gun). These were then cut out and adhered to the surface and sides of the tin with Golden gloss gel medium and a soft brush ensuring that they were covered on both sides. Once dry I coated the entire surface of the tin with more Golden gel medium watered down slightly, missing the edges of the tin in order to ensure the tin would close afterwards. I f

In the New York Times, the Pentagon manipulated the casualty totals on their website, reducing the figure from 47,657 to 31,493.
Excerpt from the article below:
The old method lumped many problems under the label "casualties," including illnesses, minor injuries and injuries from accidents, as well as wounds sustained in combat. But the public may assume that every casualty is a war wound, Dr. Kilpatrick said, so the site was changed to avoid misunderstandings.
On Monday, the bottom line of the Defense Department's Web page on casualties in Iraq listed a total of 47,657 "nonmortal casualties"
By Tuesday, the same page no longer showed a total for nonmortal casualties. The bottom line is now "total — medical air transported," and the figure is 31,493.
The new total excludes 16,164 troops who were wounded but did not require medical air transport because their injuries were minor. The total does include combat wounds, nonhostile injuries and diseases serious enough for

Three rednecks head into the backcountry intent on catching an alien. As they blunder about the woods heavily armed, they come across the alien they were in search of. Finally catching their prey, they tie him up, throw him into their van, and head back to town. In fear of being followed by angry aliens, redneck ringleader Duke (Brad William Henke) commands his loveable sidekick Otis (Michael C. Williams) to veer off onto a dirt road. Knowing not what to do, they head for the closest thing they have to an alien expert, Wyatt (Adam Kaufman), the local alien conspiracy nut, hiding off in the deep woods of their lonely country town. As the plot unfolds we realize there is a history here involving said aliens and said rednecks. Soon, our mulletted heroes are setting off to save the world from alien annihilation. The first post-Blair Witch project for director Eduardo Sanchez, Altered veers far from the spooky mockumentary style of Blair Witch and aims for the loftier realms of horror

A just published article in the journal Gut reports abnormal claudin protein levels result in patchy loss of barrier function or tight junctions (leaky gut) in Crohn's disease. This report highlights the growing importance of gut permeability or leaky gut in Crohn's and colitis as well as celiac disease. In the same issue Dr.'s Weber and Turner write a review that is titled "Inflammatory bowel disease: Is it really just another break in the wall?" that "tight junction permeability is the rate limiting step that defines the overall epithelial permeability". They go on to say that "tight junction defects may be an important source of the overall intestinal barrier defects - that is, permeability increases - seen in patients with IBD" Finally they add that "Zeissig et al provide strong evidence that the tight junction barrier function is altered in IBD". In a separate online article I review the basics of tight juntions, the proteins zonulin, claudin and occludin and ho
Saccharomyces boulardii is probiotic yeast that has been shown effective in the treatment of several diarrheal intestinal illnesses including antibiotic associated diarrhea, travelers diarreha and HIV/AIDS diarrhea. Saccharomyces boulardii has been shown to be effective in preventing relapses of Crohn's disease and treating pouchitis, a form of intestinal inflammation in surgical pouch created in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. A recent French study provides new insights and hope in the use of probiotics in the treatment of IBD. Functioning like a traffic cop, Saccharomyces boulardii prevents T lymphocyte white blood cells critical to development of Crohn's disease from migrating from lymph nodes surrounding the bowel and thereby prevents colitis in an IBD mouse model. The effect is curative relative to the amount of the yeast administered. Human studies have confirmed that a steady state of Saccharomyces boulardii is reached in the gut in about 3 days but eliminated within 2-
What are Crohn's and colitis blood tests? Currently available blood tests utilized for the diagnosis of Crohn's disease and colitis include pANCA, anti-ASCA, anti-OmpC, and anti-CBir1 flagelin antibodies. Future blood tests will likely include antibodies against certain sugar (mannose) residues that are present in the cell wall of the yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae. Anti-Laminaribioside and anti-Chitiobioside antibodies are present in some Crohn's patients who are anti-ASCA negative. Such tests will likely help further distinguish people with ulcerative colitis from Crohn's disease, a problem in about 10% of people with IBD. What is pANCA antibody?pANCA is peripheral anti-nuclear antibody. It is an antibody to protein in the nucleus of the cell. People with ulcerative colitis develop a positive pANCA frequently though it may be present in some people with Crohn's disease and rarely in normal people. The pANCA antibody has been further divided into subsets by Prometheus Laborator
Leaky gut and bacteria in the gut are important in the progression of AIDS after HIV infection. Benchley et al report elevated levels of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), a component of the cell wall of gram negative bacteria in the gut, in people with AIDS versus those HIV infection without AIDS. Lower levels of LPS therefore less bacterial translocation and leaky gut were observed in people with HIV infection treated with combination anti-viral medications and in monkeys with AIDS like virus who were treated with antibiotics to reduce gut bacteria. Signs of chronic systemic immune activation including severely depleted T-helper type CD4+ white blood cells are associated with HIV progressing to AIDS. Immune activation in AIDS is then believed the result of the breakdown of the gut mucosal barrier or a leaky gut by HIV infection. Elevated LPS in the blood is a marker of bacterial translocation that is associated with increased gut permeability. Translocation is movement of bacteria or bacte
Why celiac disease develops in 1% of people in the world who eat gluten-containing grains but not in the other 35-45% who are genetically at risk is not known. Having abnormal levels of gut bacteria levels is a risk. A 2005 study from Sweden revealed that altered short chain fatty acids (SCFA) levels produced by gut bacteria are a new piece to the puzzle. This also provides further support for the use of probiotics in the treatment and prevention of celiac disease. The healthy human gastrointestinal tract contains millions of live microbes that aid in digestion and produce various nutrients including SCFAs. These short fragments of fats when unbranched are health food for the intestine. Altered levels of SCFAs are measurable and result from an inbalance of gut microflora. Tjellström et al measured short chain fatty acids levels as an indicator of gut bacteria levels in children with celiac disease and healthy children and found significant differences. The found both untreated CD an
