      Friday's Alphabet
A new candy store opened a few weeks ago near Haiya Baihuo here in Nanshan. It seems they took it upon themselves to change the alphabet. When I first saw this sign, I thought it said "SWTET," but a friend pointed out that it looks like the letter is a cross between a T and an E (and possibly an F).Recently, I've come across a few articles that discuss the changes of English language due to the r

      Alphabet
You might imagine that something as simple and basic as the alphabet would have been around forever. But of course it hasn't. As you may well know, the elaborate pictures of Egyptian hieroglyphics and the intricate reed-poked-into-clay marks of Mesopotamian cuneiform used to be the way people communicated in writing. Gradually these were simplified into syllable symbols instead of word symbols, but were still fairly daunting and only a few scholars ever learned to write. We are often told that the Phoenicians invented the alphabet, though some debate this. Regardless of who put pen to papyrus to create it, the Phoenician contribution was none-the-less major and critical. They were the major sea-traders of the Mediterranean, and they went everywhere.Every country which had a seashore se

How To Get By Without 25% of the Alphabet With A Little Help From Your Friends
A few weeks ago we had our first Parent-Teacher conference with Jack’s Kindergarten Teacher, the lovely and conveniently named Mrs. Rogers. Ahhh…Mrs. Rogers, I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you. If only I was 32 years younger I’d let you teach me a thing or two about phonetic awareness. So, at first I was relieved to learn from Mrs. Rogers that Jack has a strong recognition and application of rhyming words which to me indicated that he has inherited the M.C. Shadöe gene. However, it was while I was picturing Jack in an Adidas sweat suit and matching Kangol hat that she told us that when last tested there were certain letters that Jack had some difficulty recognizing. We were directed to the appropriate section of the assessment sheet and sure enough, under “Letters that your child does not recognize:” were the lost characters of Jack’s alphabet. D, G, L, O, Q, T, V, and Z. He didn’t know his ABC

Three Keys To Teaching Your Child The Alphabet
By: Deanna MascleLearning the alphabet is a key part of your child's education especially when it comes to learning to read and write. It is important that children learn not only to recite the letters in order, but also to recognize letters out of sequence. In addition, after mastering basic recognition, children will need to learn the sounds each letter represents and how to write it.While many parents recognize how important learning the alphabet is to their child they are not always sure how to go about teaching the alphabet to their child. Many parents spend a lot of money on expensive products and programs designed to teach the alphabet but that really isn't necessary and in fact may well be counterproductive. As a literate adult you don't need any tools, programs or books to help you in your quest to teach the ABCs to your child. You already possess all you need in your head (your own knowledge of the alphabet) and in your house. There are three simple keys to teaching your ch

      Alphabet Mama Soup
My brother and I have figured out a great new game. We buy about ten cans of alphabet soup and each get two bowls that we split all the soup into. Our friend starts a stopwatch and we each have two minutes to create the most insults possible (usually one is all we get). It’s pretty fun, though. We got the idea checking out the search engine for the lab. We just put in the word “soup” and they came up – five pages of insults. While we were reading them and laughing our little brother started singing the “A B C D” song. Then we had the idea. The cool thing about the game is that if you match insults that appear in battle ring you get twice the points (each insult is worth ten points). The way to get the most points is to spell the names of the best battlers in the VIP room. That’s the hardest challenge and whoever loses that one has to eat the other one’s insult. The only bad part about the whole thing is that we can’t really insult each other, cause we’re

      Illustration Friday: Alphabet
The summer before my last semester of college, I had homework for my portfolio class: to create 100 sketches for proposed logos for my personal identity package. I remember being nervous that I had only done 97, but I honestly couldn't think of anything else. (Of course, once I got to class, I found that many others in the class had done about 5 ... I have always been a geek par excellence!) Anyway, once we got to the class, we all had to pin up our sketches and logos and have the rest of the class critique them. I had all these great logos, things I thought were totally sophisticated and designy looking, and instead of the cool ones, the whole class pointed to the one of this little girl with braids, riding exuberantly on an E. "That's the one," said the teacher. No, no, I protested, and tried to point to something more mysterious. "Nope." said another classmate. "The E one, that's you." I think I tried again to sway the class and was resoundingly outvoted! I'd known everyone in

Info about the Devanagari Alphabet on Omniglot.com
Just ran across info about the Devanagari alphabet on Omniglot.com. From the site: The Nāgarī or Devanāgarī alphabet descended from the Brahmi script sometime around the 11th century AD. It was originally developed to write Sanksrit but was later adapted to write many other languages. The name Devanāgarī is made up of two Sanskrit words: deva, which means god, brahman or celestial, and nāgarī, which means city. Hebrew Alphabet: Judaism 101
From the site: The Hebrew and Yiddish languages use a different alphabet than English. The picture below illustrates the Hebrew alphabet, in Hebrew alphabetical order. Note that Hebrew is written from right to left, rather than left to right as in English, so Alef is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and Tav is the last. The Hebrew alphabet is often called the "alefbet," because of its first two letters. Visit Judaism 101 read more

      Alphabet soup
One of my readers recently asked me about my inclination to use accented vowels in my posts. Stuff like ‘vis-à-vis’, ‘über’, ‘résumé’. It’s not really necessary, but to me it looks pretty. So there. She did ask me to teach her how to get these accented vowels (and consonants) to display on web pages. I think I’ll share it with everyone who’ll care to read through. (more…) HTML, special characters

Cyrillic alphabet The layout of the alphabet is derived from the early Cyrillic alphabet, itself a derivative of the Glagolitic alphabet, a ninth century uncial cursive usually credited to two Byzantine monk brothers from Thessaloniki, Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. It is widely accepted that the Glagolitic alphabet was invented by Saints Cyril and Methodius, the origins of the early Cyrillic alphabet are still a source of much controversy. Though it is usually attributed to Saint Clement of Ohrid, disciple of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius from Bulgarian Macedonia, the alphabet is more likely to have developed at the Preslav Literary School in northeastern Bulgaria, where the oldest Cyrillic inscriptions have been found, dating back to the 940s. Autumn Alphabet
This is by my Mom... Asters, bittersweet, corn.... The early autumn alphabet Promises something like Goldenrod, A nod to memory That marks time by temperature- Is it night now, or day?- Autumn heat Sings with dying. Asters fade to phosphorous blue. Bittersweet, to banked coals. To much heat. The world tumbles into night. Goldenrod blows in the wind, sun In a falling sky; we Dress for night
