I just found out some horrible news today that a former co-worker, and someone I considered to be an all around good guy and friend has passed away.Kip Allan passed away on Sunday here in Minnesota due to some liver problems, as well as a bad case of pneumonia.I worked with Kip at my current job a couple of years ago, and at first glance he could be quite intimidating. Calling Allan Heinberg a bad writer is like calling root beer a bad vegetable. I can’t think of a positive thing to say about his writing. Similarly, I can’t think of a single positive thing to say about Terry Dodson’s art. Dodson draws terrible faces, odd body proportions (any Dodson supporter needs to leave Rob Liefeld alone) and his action scenes are boring. Except all of “Who is Wonder Woman?” is boring–the only moment with any tension is the moment I created tension for–I hoped for a Batman and Wonder Woman kiss, just because it’d at least make things interesting.

Born as Allan C. Haozous, this artist was to become known as Allan Houser, one of the 20th Century’s most important artists. Allan’s father was with the small band of Warm Springs Chiricahuas when their leader, Geronimo, surrendered to the U.S. Army in 1886 in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. At an early age Allan became interested in Apache traditions and cultural life, which he celebrated in his life’s work. In 1934 a notice for an art school in Santa Fe attracted his attention, and he enrolled in the Painting School at the Santa Fe Indian School. Commonly known as the Dorothy Dunn School after its prominent teacher, Allan became its most famous student and by 1939 his work was exhibited in San Francisco, Washington D. C., and Chicago. In the mid-1970's, guitarist Allan Holdsworth and keyboardist Alan Pasqua
played together in the late drummer Tony Williams' New Lifetime band.
This was a classic fusion band that turned a lot of people on to Allan Holdsworth for the first time. Holdsworth and Pasqua have collaborated several times since those days, but in 2006 they joined forces with Chad Wackerman on drums, and Jimmy Haslip on bass for a special tour to pay tribute to the music of Tony Williams. The September 29th show at Yoshi's in Oakland CA was filmed by Altitude Digital for this DVD, and the result is the best Holdsworth footage I have ever seen.
First off, this is a beautiful looking video. It's a standard DVD, but it was filmed in HD, and looks fantastic on an LCD HDTV. The footage is crystal clear, and the audio is great (for those of you wondering, there is a 5.1 surround sound option). The editing is a bit quick in some spots, but it wasn't a distraction for me.

This short clip is one of several from the DVD that Altitude Digital has uploaded to YouTube. The DVD was recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland California last year, during a tour Holdsworth and Pasqua did with Chad Wackerman (drums), and Jimmy Haslip (bass). On the tour, the band played material from the old Tony Williams New Lifetime band, which Holdsworth and Pasqua were both members of. The show was filmed in HD, but it's not clear from the pre-order page if this is a standard DVD, or an HD-DVD. I'm assuming it's standard. There's no release date listed either, but all indications are it should be released soon.

Per Allan Holdsworth's website, the live DVD recorded recently at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA will be released in eary 2007 by Altitude Digital. That same lineup (Holdsworth, Pasqua, Wackerman, Haslip) will play some more live dates in Europe in early May 2007.
Also, Holdsworth's trio (with Chad Wackerman - drums, and Jimmy Johnson - bass) will be touring the northeastern US in March 2007. Dates and venues TBA.
I've always believed it is not a coincidence that Halloween and Election day are so close together. The results of an election can be more frightening than anything the goblins can cough up. With that frame of mind, I now present a new poem.
