However, this story about a new appointee to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is just too interesting to pass up. Check this out: Steven Weinberg said he was surprised when a member of Gov. Rick Perry’s staff called to say the governor was offering him a spot on the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. “I told them that I, personally, don’t drink,” said Weinberg, 65, a semiretired surgeon and attorney who lives in Colleyville. “They said that was good, because I’d come to the issues with an open mind.”

No, not because of my excessive flatulence, but simply gales and the like, which knocked down this absolutely massive tree in my neighbor’s yard. Hurrah, thinks I, because it had long cast huge shadows on my garden, causing the grass to be patchy and my roses to not bloom at their fullest. So this massive tree is now lying across my neighbor's garden, and the one next to that.So my neighbor, Mr X, a nurse in his late thirties, rings my doorbell and says he wants to talk about what we are going to do about the tree. I have to admit that I don’t like Mr X. I suppose it might be because he often stands outside his front door in pyjamas and a jacket, smoking a cigarette and peering at everyone who passes by in a suspicious fashion. Th

      Addictions - Recognising an Alcoholic
Learning that your life partner or a close friend or family member is an alcoholic can come as a severe shock. This is particularly true when you have failed to notice that anything was wrong with them over a long period. However, you shouldn't blame yourself because the nature of an alcoholic is to be secretive and devious so as not to be caught out.In some households, it is normal practice to have a couple of drinks after work, wine with dinner and maybe even a nightcap. If yours is one of those, then it is even less likely that you will notice if someone is an alcoholic. The same holds true for couples or families who socialise a lot in pubs or restaurants or other establishments, which serve alcoholic drinks. In these circumstances, if someone seems a little tipsy occasionally, the ass

Phoenix, Arizona Alcoholic Anonymous: The Tenth Step Promise
(Working the Step)This thought brings us to Step Ten, which suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our lifetime. Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code.(The 10th step Promise) And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone, even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find th

Arizona - Alcoholic Anonymous: The Spiritual Malady
The Missing Piece: The Spiritual Maladyby Mike L., West Orange, NJ"Carry THIS Message" Group, West Orange, NJ It is agreed that the "mental obsession" is the part of our "disease" which leads to the first drink; and it's the first drink that triggers the "phenomenon of craving." But, what part of my "disease" that triggers the mental obsession in the first place? We know the physical craving does not cause these people to drink because it's been medically proven that after a few days of not drinking the alcohol is processed out of the body. And, if you've been in the AA Fellowship for a while, for most people, the mental obsession dissipates. So why is it that after a long period of sobriety many people in our fellowship return to drinking - EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T WANT TO? What is the third fold of our illness that triggers the mental obsession - WHEN NOT DRINKING - HAVING BEEN SEPARATED FROM ALCOHOL FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME? Through closely examining our Big Book, along with

Changing old, imbalanced patterns is possible only if invidiuals feel they have chooices. Discouraging voics of doom and gloom need to be quited for recovery efforts to be implemented. Self-pity, vicim roles, and the poor-me syndrome prevent adult Children of Alcholoics(ACA) from even entertaining a choice to change. The old familial belief system whispers in the ACA’s ear: “Change is not possible, so why even try? You’ll just waste time and energy and fail, anyways, just as you always have in the past.” Changes involve integration and congruency with feelings and choosing not to respond in dysfucntional, codependent ways. There is the acknoledgment that change is dificult, takes time, may involve pain, and requires support. Sometimes small changes and positive choices can establish the foundation for more significant growth-related choices later. A variety of therapeutic issues must be explored before the ACA can improve interpeersonal relationships. Some of t

      Non-alcoholic drinks
Not everything is rhum and chilled beer in Dominican Republic: tropical fruit juices are a delight; for example those made from guanábana (Soursop) juice, chinola (passionfruit), tamarind or delicious combinations such as Morir Soñando, with orange juice, ice cubes and condensed milk (or evaporated milk plus sugar).Of course the ubiquitous soft drinks like Coca-Cola are present here, together with a local brand, Red Rock.Dominican Republic is also renowned because of its coffee, from the arabica variety, soft and aromatic, with medium body and medium to high acidity. The coffee bush is cultivated in mid-mountain areas, and always under the shadow of bigger trees. Santo Domingo is one of the main Dominican coffee brands.
