However, many definitions of alcoholism exist, and only some are compatible w

If you suffer from alcohol-related problems now, it’s likely that you started drinking when you were younger. But about 30 percent of older drinkers start abusing alcohol after age 60. These late-onset drinkers tend to explain their drinking as a reaction to retirement, the death of a spouse or other stresses of older age.

Reshaping of the DNA scaffolding that supports and controls the expression of genes in the brain may play a major role in the alcohol withdrawal symptoms, particularly anxiety, that make it so difficult for alcoholics to stop abusing the drug. The finding is reported by University of Illinois at Chicago and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center researchers in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. DNA can undergo changes in function without any changes in inheritance or coded sequence. These "epigenetic" changes are minor chemical modifications of chromatin dense bundles of DNA and proteins called histones. "This is the first time anyone has looked for epigenetic changes related to chromatin remodeling in the brain during alcohol addiction," said Dr Subhash C. Pandey, professor
Alcoholism is a fatal chronic illness affecting the lives of 20-30% of the homosexual population. Studies have found that 35% of lesbians had a history of excessive drinking, compared to only 5% of the heterosexual women. In addition, further studies have shown that 30% of lesbians and gay men are addicted to drugs, suggesting that the gay and lesbian community constitutes a high-risk population

Most people, and certainly most smart people, avoid looking too closely at their alcohol use. Frequently that’s a good idea, at least in the short run. Unhappily, over the long haul this can lead to problems, both real and mythical, that early and productive awareness might have helped avoid.

Alcoholism is a silent killer; it's not well known like many other diseases and it's often left untreated until its victim dies from cirrhosis of the liver. There are millions of people across the world that...

Wednesdays I read the Daily Princetonian. The time I have between classes is not enough to go eat at home and the next class is too late to eat afterwards. So I go to the cafeteria and while I’m there I grab a copy of the Daily Princetonian and read it. So for me it’s the Wednesday Princetonian. I know no other. This Wednesday they had a (yet another) article on under-age drinking at the eating clubs. The whole course of events seems unclear to me. Based on the description provided in the article, it seems more than plausible that some under-aged students had been drinking at the Eating Clubs, and that stories have been fabricated for acquittal – quite the opposite from what the article was trying to portray. The most suspicious bit of information from this aspect is the assertion that "once they sober up, the truth comes out". Up to now, I thought it to be common knowledge that the opposite is true: "Once wine goes in, secrets come out" (Talmud Bavli, Sanhedrin 38:1). Such an int
A researcher at the University at Buffalo’s Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) is initiating a study of “mindfulness-based stress reduction,” a technique often used in behavioral medicine for stress reduction but not before as an adjunct in the treatment of alcohol use disorders.
“By adapting and applying mindfulness-based stress reduction or MBSR in alcoholism treatment, we hope to develop an increased ability to cope with stress and enhanced psychological well-being among alcohol-dependent individuals,” said Gerard J. Connors, Ph.D. “For people who often deal with stress in their lives by turning to alcohol, this could be a very positive alternative.”
Connors is a clinical psychologist and principal investigator on the study as well as the director of RIA. He also is a professor in the Department of Psychology in the UB College of Arts and Sciences and research professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the UB School of Medicine and Bio
Not too long ago I discussed life insurance exam labs results. I mentioned that the tests were not always tests that would lead to a diagnosis of a specific problem, but were tests that often exposed the tip of the iceberg, where a more serious problem might lie hidden beneath.
One such case would be with the liver function test call a GGT, Gamma Glutamyl Transferase. This isn’t a test that you would normally find on your annual exam with your doctor. The truth is that doctors don’t run it and don’t see the value in it. They say it is too “nonspecific” to be of value.
The GGT simply put, measures irritation of the liver. Irritation of the liver can be caused by over the counter medication such as Ibuprofen. Elevation can be caused by drinking and of course, the irritation can potentially be just the beginning stages of something more serious such as cancer.
One of the most common culprits for an elevated GGT is heavy drinking. Not so heavy that extensive l

Despite over a hundred years of research and scores of potential treatments, alcoholism remains America's most common addiction and the most notoriously difficult to overcome.According to a new study released this in July by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, more than thirty percent of American adults have abused alcohol at some point in their lives or suffer from alcoholism. The same study says that only 25% of those afflicted received any treatment. And other studies show that, at best, only a small percentage of those who seek treatment manage to abstain from alcohol for a year."Alcohol problems are not just something that affects Hollywood stars," said Dr. Robert Swift, a psychiatrist at Brown University who specializes in alcoholism. "We're talking about a chronic, relapsing condition. And we still have a long way to go in treatment. It's like treatment of cancer-some people can be helped but others just cannot."Science is learning that alcoholism, like add
In somewhat of a "man bites dog" kind of a story, Anheuser-Busch has made a $300,000 donation to the University of Mississippi to fight alcohol abuse on the school's Oxford, Miss., campus.A-B is going to help fund a social norming research study started three years ago by the Ole Miss Center for Health Promotion. The project involves research and education designed to dispel myths among college students that most of their fellow students drink heavily. The program's goal is to give students accurate information and help them make responsible decisions about consuming alcohol. Some at Ole Miss are against accepting A-B's donation and argue that the social norming solution does not work as well as mandatory freshman alcohol awareness programs and strict enforcement of laws regarding underage drinking. The fact of the matter is that the anti-alcohol crowd is showing its true colors in this case by calling on the University of Mississippi to reject the donation. A-B's willingness to ste
