ABA Retracts 'Lawyer of the Year' from Fascist Alberto Gonzales
CHICAGO Dec. 14, 2007 -- The ABA Journal posted an article titled "Lawyers of the Year 2007 & 2008" on ABA Journal.com, on Dec. 12, 2007. The article defined that term as the year's biggest legal newsmaker, identifying former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as the major newsmaker of 2007. The Journal regrets that we did not make this theme clear.
We appreciate the feedback we've received, and we're acting on it. So that there can be no confusion, the term "Lawyers of the Year" has been changed in the headline and story to
Well, the American Bar Association has stripped Alberto Gonzales of the title of Lawyer of the Year in a rare instance of ethical concern on the part of lawyers.I guess they realized having a lawyer who may be charged as a criminal within the next year may not be the best way to have their association represented. They have instead given him the title of "Newsmaker of the Year", which translates to "Scandal Magnet of the Year" in cynical-speak.

It was a foregone conclusion that the embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales would be leaving his post it was just a matter of when. He had lost support from almost everybody in the administration except President Bush himself. As I have said before, Alberto Gonzales was in way over his head as Attorney General. But he had the support of the President and in this administration thats all that really matters. Have I used the terms political hack and cronyism enough in previous posts about Gonzales? I am sure I have not when compared to how much it happens in the Bush administration. The administration has even been floating the idea of another hack, Michael Chertoff, taking Gonzaless place at DoJ. This is the same guy that told DHS investigators they couldnt use the term radical Islam in their reports as it might offend some muslins. Welcome the new boss same as the old boss? I hope not. Maybe for once the Bush administration will not pull a Harriet Miers and will
Solicitor General Paul Clement is going to, at least temporarily, take over for Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General when his resignation takes effect September 17th. But is this good news or bad news?Let's get the bad news out of the way. As described by law.com, Paul Clement "has a perfectly appointed conservative resume." This resume includes clerking for Justice Scalia, being a former member of the Federalist Society, working with Kenneth Starr, and of course, being appointed to his current position by President George W. Bush. During his tenure as Solicitor General, he has publicly argued that President Bush has the power to imprison those he deems enemies indefinitely and deny them access to legal council. Possibly most concerning, however, is the revelation by TPMuckraker that it has been Paul Clement who has been determining which documents are given to Congress and which ones are not, and let's just say that the Justice Department and the White House have been airing on the
Today Alberto Gonzales announced his Resignation from his position as Attorney General of the United States. While many on the Right will move to defend Gonzales, I am certainly not one of those people. Alberto Gonzales was an abject failure, who demonstrated utter incompetence. Had Alberto Gonzales not held the position, virtually none of the fake scandals would have arisen. There are some major benefits to Gonzales’ resignation, however, other than a competent person taking his place. The first benefit is that the Democrats are not going to be able to deflect attention from their own shortfalls. With Karl Rove and Alberto Gonzales gone, this may require the Democrat Party, led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, to actually accomplish something. Since Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took office, not only has this Congress become one of the most corrupt in history, but neither The Speaker or the Majority Leader can get their Party in order. Now the American people can tell Reid and Pelo
The most important thing about the Alberto Gonzales resignation is it illustrated ,once again, how clueless and incompetent the president is.George Bush marched out and gave a speech, basically saying how he had reluctantly accepted the resignation of Gonzales. And lectured us on what a sad day it was when as fine a person as Alberto is would be dragged through the mud.The problem with Gonzales was not that he went and browbeat John Ashcroft, while he was in his sickbed, into signing off on the warrantless wiretapping regulations.Nor was it even the mess he created in the justice department as a whole. The real problem is he is just one sorry ass lawyer. And the president doesn't get it.I wouldn't hire that guy to bail my dog out of the pound. But he was not only Bush's personal lawyer, but is the chief law enforcement officer in the Republic. We all know why they canned the five U.S. Attorneys--they weren't vigorously towing the party line. There were various specific concerns--no
The New York Times is reporting Alberto “Torture Guy” Gonzales will announced his resignation this morning over at the President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas. (h/t from Matt Ortega and Think Progress). According to the Times, Gonzales submitted his resignation to President Bush by telephone last Friday, but it was not announced until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.
The sad news is that U.S. News reported he will be replaced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.
The buzz among top Bushies is that beleaguered Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally plans to depart and will be replaced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Why Chertoff? Officials say he’s got fans on Capitol Hill, is untouched by the Justice prosecutor scandal, and has more experience than Gonzales did, having served as a federal judge and assistant attorney general.
The news of his resignation is very surprising considering
Former Senator and current presumed GOP Presidential candidate Fred Thompson is already shaking up his campaign staff.
General Petraeus wants to keep U.S. troops in Iraq until at least 2009. It looks like he will have some explaining to do in September.
This isn’t really news, but, the Attorney General of the United States is completely shameless.

From cave drawings, to picture books, to a ghost tale spoken in hushed tones around a campfire, human beings are always interested in a good story. We begin to truly communicate when our stories have pictures that our audience can see or imagine. It is how we empathize, which is the highest form of listening.
The reason I’ve been thinking about all of this is because of the recent testimony by Deputy Attorney General James Comey, and the impact it’s had on the Alberto Gonzales attorney scandal. Comey’s testimony took an experience that doesn’t conjure up mental imagery—a constitutional crisis of the highest order—and transformed it into a universal image. After all, who can’t imagine an older man, sick and slightly disoriented in his hospital bed, with two able-bodied (and perhaps ill-intentioned) men bursting through the door? That’s certainly much easier for the average American to envision and develop an emotion around than abstract concep
(Washington D.C.) Over the weekend, President George W. Bush unveiled a new plan to deal with the enemies of the United States. The plan, called the Strategy To Undermine People Irritating to Dubya or S.T.U.P.I.D., was immediately put into action, when the President removed Osama Bin Laden as the head of Al-Qaeda and replaced him with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. For those confused with the new directive, President Bush offered this to clear the air.“Look I finally realized that we, my administration, are completely incompetent. We don’t know what the hell we’re doing. And not knowing a damn thing starts at the top, with me,” said President Bush

On a slow news day Alberto Gonzales never lets me down.Today it was revealed the insane fearmongering John Ashcroft is an honest to god defender of the constitution, at least compared to Gonzales and his employer. For those of you who have been able to put Ashcroft out of your mind, he used to be the Attorney General, a job he got as a consolation prize, when he was unable to beat a dead guy in a Senate race.As you also recall, Dubya had this domestic wire-tapping program going which did not require any silly warrants or approval by those wretched judges. But as time went by, a few people in the White House got to thinking in order to cover their ass they ought to get the Attorney General to sign off on it.So they went to John Ashcroft. Apparently, he had a few reservations and wanted to think about it. I don't know for sure, but perhaps he was concerned the program was blatantly illegal.Anyway, before the AG could get it straight in his head, he fell seriously ill with pancreatis and
Alberto Gonzales has recently proposed a new series of intellectual property protections that would increase criminal penalties for copyright infringement. The new protections (known as the Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2007) also includes a thinly veiled new crime for "attempts" to commit piracy, which was non-existant under old legislation. Though this is something that may not affect a lot of gamers, the strengthening of the DMCA Anti-Circumvention Regulations do have some startling effects on the current import, homebrew, and mod-chip market. The new proposal will increase the penalties that the DMCA currently has that holds individuals accountable to up to ten years in prison and fines of up to $1 million for altering hardware or software to bypass any copyright protections. This includes mod chips, custom firmware, and other means currently popular by gamers to use back-ups or illegal copies of games on a system that has a protected method in place to prevent copied

2. Karl Rove is pushing for his dismissal.
3. You can read the secret document Gozalez wrote which created the conditions that sparked the U.S. Attorney firing scandal here.
4. He has very little professional experience in which he wasn’t working under George W. Bush.
5. He has been urging Internet Service Providers to spy on their customers for quite some time now.
All of these links are worth reading in full. This man has no business as Attorney General of the United States.

Earlier this week, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales met privately with public safety, education and mental health officials in Jackson, Mississippi to discuss ways to make schools safer. What can we do? Some, like former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich have noted how students with concealed weapons have stopped such shootings on other campuses.

Saturday Night Live takes on the Alberto Gonzales testimony, and asks the question..As a lawyer shouldn't he have been better prepared..or are you just a Bush puppet(okay the last line is my question)..
Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) opens the Alberto Gonzales hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, on April 19, 2007. Patrick Leahy addresses the crowd about the purpose of the hearings. Leahy stats that the purpose of the meetings is to determine the reasons of the dismissals of the eight U.S. attorneys and to determine if the firings were political or not. "If the White House did nothing wrong than prove it. If nothing to hide then the White House should stop hiding it. Quit claiming the emails cannot be produced. ...Show us the documents," Leahy said. Senator Kohl (D-Wisconsin) questions Gonzales about possible voter fraud in Wisconsin and why that U.S. attorney was not fired for not prosecuting those cases. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) questions Gonzales about recess appointments of U.S. attorneys and Patriot Act revisions.
Washington Post story link Nothing ImproperBy Alberto R. GonzalesSunday, April 15, 2007; B07My decision some months ago to privately seek the resignations of a small number of U.S. attorneys has erupted into a public firestorm. First and foremost, I appreciate the public service of these fine lawyers and dedicated professionals, each of whom served his or her full four-year term as U.S. attorney. I apologize to them, their families and the thousands of dedicated professionals at the Justice Department for my role in allowing this matter to spin into an undignified Washington spectacle. What began as a well-intentioned management effort to identify where, among the 93 U.S. attorneys, changes in leadership might benefit the department, and therefore the American people, has become an unintended public controversy. While I accept responsibility for my role in commissioning this management review process, I want to make some fundamental points abundantly clear
Alberto,Can I call you Alberto? Al? Senor lawyer-guy? Or how about the-dude-who-is-totally-up-shit's-creek? Cuz that's what you are. You know that, right? Yeah, all that "nothing to hide" shit is cute and all, but you are deader than my career. In fact, you're deader than my son's career. You know what? That's dead. Dead, I say.You want some advice? Just fess up and tell them that you snorted the drugs. Wait, that's not why you're in trouble. Oh yeah, the lawyer firing stuff. You know, I'm not really a politics guy, but it seems to me that everything you've ever done in the history of your life, including this firing stuff, was wrong. Therefore, you should resign your office and pay off my extensive credit card debt. Yup, resigning office is not going to be good enough. You also need to pay MY bills, because that's what the American public would want. How do I know that? I'm an American, gosh darnit, and I know what my people want. Sure, you're an American
The Democrats have delayed Alberto Gonzales’ testimony in the made up controversy that is the US attorney firings. The white house had wanted to move the hearings up to get them over with. The Democrats denied that request. The white house knows he did nothing wrong, so they want to put it in the past and get on with business. Now they have delayed the original date.
The reason I believe they did this was to drag out the trumped up controversy. They know no wrong act was committed here, they have even admitted it. But they know that Americans who don’t pay close attention to politics will be listening and they hope to make them believe criminal activity took place here. The longer they can drag this out, the more they believe it hurts the president, and that’s the true goal.
The Democrats are in no hurry to show the country nothing wrong happened here, they are just interested in making the administration look bad.
keith hit the nail on the head in pointing out the delicious hypocrisy of limbaugh accusing almost anyone of racism during his 'worst person in the world' segment last night:And the winner: Comedian Rush Limbaugh. Claiming criticism of Attorney General Gonzales... is racism."So you have the first Hispanic-American attorney general -- a minority -- under fire by white liberal racists in the Senate."Like Senator Salazar? Rarely does a day a go by without Americans learning about Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and the political strife over the firings of US Attorneys. Jerome Corsi has written so many good expose stories lately. He has been all over the scandal involving ex Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean and Bush's efforts at removing our national borders. This story of Alberto Gonzales, Johnny Sutton and many others actively covering up sexual abuses of children under state care reminds me of the Catholic Church covering up for their pedophile priests. For over 2 years this went on in Texas and Gonzales and Sutton turned a deaf ear to the cries of abused children. Like Jerome Corsi says below "Your government at work". The new head of the TYC is saying they are going to investigate 1200 allegations of sexual abuse. I must say, this is a gross oversimplification of an immigration policy that, I believe, is well-attuned to the political and practical exigencies of today's socio-market economy. I have outline the prosecutable parameters for multiple illegal entry into the United States. They are:1st offense: Individual will be afforded: 1) return bus ticket to country of origin; and 2) 8 x 10" photograph of George W. Bush signed, "Come again ya'll! George 'That's El Presidente To You' Bush."2nd offense: Individual can expect: 1) courtesy escort to country of origin; 2) complimentary "Hungry Hombre" plate at Nogales Denny's (gratuity not included); and 3) 5 x 7" photograph of George W. Bush signed, "I appreciate your initiative! George 'I'm Practically A Mexican Myself' Bush."3rd offense: Individual may receive: 1) verbal warning; 2) AAA map showing shortest route between Disney's California Adventure and Tijuana; 3) 3 x 5" photograph of George W. Bush signed, "I hear Canada's lovely this
Ok trying to cut through all the smoke and mirrors crap the four most salient points that I keep running across about the attorneys fired are these:Carol Lam here in California was fired for successfully prosecuting Randy Duke CunninghamJohn McKay was fired for not pushing the voter fraud issue hard enough in a very close Governors race in Washington state. David Iglesias of new Mexico was fired for not giving Republican Senators privileged information on Democrat candidates just prior to the mid term elections. Bud Cummins of Arkansas was replaced to make room for a Karl Rove associate. If this is true then it is a case of blatantly vengeful partisan politics against otherwise capable and highly rated US Attorneys. People speaking in the defense of the administration keep saying that Clinton replaced all 93 US Attorneys when he took office. That is true but so did George Bush when he started his first term. What the President has done that is highly unusual is to fire thos
In a stunning turn of events Republican Senator John Sunnunu of New Hampshire has asked for the President to fire Alberto Gonzales as head of the Justice Department. Surprisingly the President has only shown lukewarm support at best for Gonzales in recent interviews in spite of him being a long time Bush friend and loyalist going all the way back to Bush's days as Governor of Texas. The replacement of US Attorneys in and of itself is no big deal. Most new incoming administrations ask for their resignations en masse. It's nothing out of the ordinary, just politics as usual. In this case however there has been an added dimension of politics that goes far beyond the norm as revelations surface of lawmakers pressuring US Attorneys to selectively investigate Democrats rather than fellow Republicans. Initially the White House issued a blanket denial of involvement in this, but recent email revelations have shown that the White House counsel and the Presidents chief political architect K
United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was in town today looking at our bridges to Canada. He was here to announce just $900,000 in new spending here to combat human trafficking.
We have a Customs and Immigrations department. Isn’t that their job? This is exactly the kind of duplication of services that costs the taxpayers too much money.
The U.S. Attorney General position was created by the Judicial Act of 1789, Section 35. The original duties were “to prosecute and conduct all suits in the Supreme Court in which the United States shall be concerned, and to give her advice and opinion upon questions of law when required by the President of the United States, or when requested by the heads of any of the departments.” There was no Justice Department to support this position until 1870. Now, the Attorney General rarely handles cases in front of the Supreme Court, he has a Solicitor General for that purpose.
