Alberta Budget 2008: Health Care Premiums are History
Finally. Effective January 1, 2009. That's the biggest sound bite to come out of Tuesday's budget. Considering the fact that this province has been swimming in oil money for so long, that move is long overdue. The Calgary Herald has more:Spending up 12%Finance Minister Iris Evans' first financial blueprint projects $37 billion in operating and capital spending this year and a relatively small surplus of $1.6 billion, based on extremely conservative commodity prices, such as oil averaging $78 per barrel this year. The Cons always low ball the oil money projections so they can claim "success" each year when they pretend to act surprised at how much of a surplus actually results from that little game. Then they use that little trick to talk about how wonderful they are. It's gotten pretty old.

Report predicts slowdown in Alberta real estate market
CALGARY - A report released today by TD Bank Financial Group says housing starts in Alberta as well as the number of homes sold will retreat in the next two years as the country on the whole experiences a cooling trend in the residential real estate industry. Also the yearly pace of resale home price growth in the province will slow down substantially from the highs recorded in the past two years."A soft landing is anticipated," said the report about the Canadian housing market. "This moderation will reflect the fact that the past rapid price appreciation has eroded affordability and has encouraged additional supply from new listings and new home construction. A weaker domestic economy will also contribute to the cooling."

Wide and unobstructed looking east across the plains, and framed by a line of mountains to the west. It is a breathe-taking part of this lovely land we call Canada. But Alberta is dying. The oil companies and the industries that spring around them are killing the land. Alberta is dying. There is nothing uglier to see than a human feeding frenzy; the orgy of environmental destruction, greed and mad plunder. Alberta is indeed a sad beauty.

      Alberta revises nurse recruitment tactics
The Canadian federal government has given Alberta the go-ahead and C$530,000 in funding to fly overseas and recruit foreign nurses. Officials from Alberta will be able to recruit and assess nurses without requiring these nurses to fly to Calgary's Mount Royal College first to take assessment exams, CBC reports. The move is intended to help Ottawa fill thousands of nursing vacancies. The pilot program is expected to save time and money as assessors can now go directly to places that have traditionally supplied nursing manpower and evaluate them in their own countries. During the assessment program, assessors look at the nurses' experience, education, and English skills. If an education upgrade is required of a nurse, classes can be taken that lasts from a few weeks to a year.**Personal Note**This is good news for Philippine nurses who want to try their luck in Canada. Both are enraptured by US country blues/soul, gospel and ’70s folk rock, as proven on their seven track EP of strong songs called ‘The Thief & The Heartbreaker’. However, faithful reproduction is not their way and although the title track leans heavily on Neil Young’s ‘Down By The River’, My Morning Jacket and The White Stripes loom as large in their record collections as Gram Parsons and The Band. For proof, listen to “I’ve Known for Long”, although the soulful opener title track is an undeniably effective introduction to the band. Several years ago, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club made a similar album of excellence with ‘Howl’. With ‘The Thief & The Heartbreaker’, decades seem to blur away and the music has a feel that belongs to listeners both young and old. Alberta Cross and their intro EP splash big, rewarding promise to music fans everywhere. Enjoy

Haunted Alberta - Spooky Real Estate
Who could resist? I should write about ROI's or the two great new properties we have picked up recently but all work and no play makes people axe murders! With help from two great sites, The Shadowlands and Zuko - Weird And Spooky Places, I was able to compile a few Albertan haunted houses. From Zuko:1.Banff Springs Hotel - "One very sad and tragic tale involves a young bride and her elegant wedding party in the hotel's grand ballroom. It seems that on the day of the young woman's wedding, she was descending the ornate marble staircase in her beautiful flowing white wedding gown. And, as the story goes, an unexpected breeze (presumably from an open door or window) twisted the gown's flowing train into her path, causing her to stumble. Attempts by the groom to catch-hold of his young wife were in vain, and she fell to her death on the polished marble tiles below. To this day, there are recurring reports of a fleeting vision of a beautiful girl in a long flowing white dress dancing i

      Shuck Alberta
Alberta is one big sandy irritant, well at least that’s what Al Gore would have you believe. I’ve been hearing a lot from Mr. Gore recently about the oil sands and their role in contributing to global warming.First and foremost I think we as Canadians care about the environment and have always taken the steps needed to protect our beautiful country. Secondly, in my opinion the off shoot of the economic world growth, especially in China and India, will ultimately help improve living conditions around the world and over time, better equip us as a global community to deal with climate changes as well as decrease global warming.Alberta is an irritant, just not the kind Mr. Gore implies. As a kid I remember going to Hawaii and on every street corner there were Hawaiians selling oysters from big icy barrels. They were something like 3 for $5, maybe more I can’t remember exactly. You had a chance to grab an oyster with a pearl in it. Every tourist bought them. Sure enough, every time, y

Do You Know The Alberta Advantage?
A marketing term, "branding" if you will, of a province by the genius that is Ralph Klein. The Alberta Advantage was used to promote, well, Alberta's advantages to the world. From giving Alberta shaped cheques (can't find proof of this but I heard it on a podcast -urban legend?? folklore??) to charities to opening Alberta offices in countries around the world; Klein started a highly successful marketing campaign for a province like it was the hottest new product around. And do you know what? It is."Entrepreneurial-ism" and business are what Klein promoted; one look at Alberta's blockbuster economy shows that he was more than successful. This is the Alberta Advantage from Wikipedia :"The Alberta Advantage illustrates, using widely accepted performance indicators, that Alberta is leading the way in these areas and is progressing toward its vision by capitalizing on the exciting opportunities that are available… * a strong and vibrant economy * a young, skilled and productiv

      Alberta's Environmental Strategy
The oil sands are striking when you see them. It is hard to imagine this area was once pristine prairie land and will ever be that way again. Many environmentalists worry that Alberta's environment will not be protected with the incredible growth in the province. CANADA: Blowouts, spills spike in Alberta oilpatch
Alberta's oilpatch recorded a dramatic increase in blowouts and spills last year, including a pipeline rupture worse than the spill caused by CN Rail's highly publicized 2005derailment near Wabamun Lake. The Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) says there were 45 incidents of uncontrollable emission of oil or gas in 2006, more than double the norm of about 20 annually and 30 per cent more than there were in 2005."It's something that we're looking at very closely," said EUB spokesman Darin Barter. "If there are areas of weakness in our regulations we need to determine that. Or is it an anomaly? That's what we're assessing now. We're very concerned about that number."There were also nearly 100 more spills in 2006 than the previous year, including a massive crude oil spill near Slave Lake that was originally reported as being about 1,260 barrels or 200,000 litres. But an EUB investigation report filed last spring revealed the spill was actually 1.3 million litres of oil.CN's spill at Wa

      Alberta Separatists New Best Friend?
The victory of newly-minted Liberal leader Stephane Dion has made some in the Alberta separatist movement sit up and take notice. After several months in snooze mode, with the provincial P.C. riding an eternal wave of popularity and a comfy federal minority Conservative government in Ottawa, most in the movement have been taking a 'wait and see' position. Dion's biggest test: Alberta's oil sands
Many people are waxing poetically about Stéphane Dion's environmental credentials. The new Liberal leader was praised for his progressive yet untimely legislation as environment minister, which was killed in late 2005 before it could be debated. As a Liberal leadership contender in 2006, it was Dion who first made the environment a prominent issue within his personal policy platform. Alongside the economy and social justice, the environment was a major part of Dion's "three pillars" strategy - which is similar to the Green Party's "triple-bottom-line accounting" - stressing that all three policy areas need to be part of a pragmatic balance, and that a zero-sum approach that stresses one or even two of these three areas can never lead to a balanced policy agenda. Iggy and others quickly followed suit regarding Dion's environmental lead, helping it to become a major policy area of the Liberal leadership campaign. Several candidates, such as former Tory Scott Brison, gave the envi

      The 'Nation' of Alberta
I was at a loss. That's right, folks: An issue appeared, and I was thrown for a loop. For those who aren't in the know, I have been really impressed by the federal Conservatives ever since they came into minority power in Ottawa. I was aware of Stephen Harper's credentials, and was familiar with many of the new Tory cabinet members. With sensible ideas and actions on such issues as our military, the softwood lumber dispute, and especially their refusal to give in to reactionary demand and continue with the Liberal gun registry, I was willing to give this federal government a chance. To be clear, I still believe that an independent Alberta isn't only a desire but an eventuality. But this government is Western-based. We might get some fairness after all, right? Then Rona Ambrose started showing the effects of Early Socialist-Believability Syndrome by allegedly weakening in her opposition to the deadly Kyoto Accord. This, after the Conservatives 'pulled an Oberg' and made a horrible

Bilinguisme obligatoire dans Alberta ? NON! (Forced Bilingualism in Alberta? NO!)
It had to happen. We knew it was just a matter of time. For years, Albertans have been waiting for the other shoe to drop, and now we are reeling from the thud. It is amazing that it didn't happen sooner, to be honest. In a case that just might end up in Canada's Supreme Court, a man who describes himself as an 'Alberta Francophone' is challenging a simple traffic ticket - because his request to have the ticket translated into French was denied. Gilles Caron, a truck driver from Edmonton, then attempted to have his subsequent trial in French which was also denied. Now, Caron has decided to turn a traffic ticket - make that, a three-year-old $54 traffic ticket - into a language issue. He has hired a lawyer with the intent of 'justice', but who does he think he is kidding? This is nothing more than a blatant attempt to make Alberta fall in line with the East's perception of Canada. If successful, this trial could have implications from coast to coast, and essentially place the doctr

      Alberta: America's New Best Friend
President Kennedy said it. Nixon, too. As well as Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and both Bushes. As far back as the days of Ike in the White House the promise to lessen the United State's dependence on foreign oil has been made. Administration after administration, Democrat and Republican alike, the issue was raised with the vow to give America more independence and self-sufficiency when it came to non-renewable resources. Today, America's reliance on oil from overseas has never been higher. The rising tensions in the Middle East has placed the U.S. in a precarious position. While dealing with radical oil producing nations and maintaining shaky alliances with shady Arabian nations such as Saudi Arabia, the U.S. has found itself playing the odds when it comes to the future of gas availability. The attention has recently been swayed over to the side of finding 'alternative energy sources' to not only help find a solution to the oil issue but to the environmental problem as wel

Plan to build pipeline from Alberta oilsands to BC Port of Kitimat
Plans are in the works for an oil pipeline from the Alberta oilsands to the BC port of Kitimat. To many this sounds wonderful: jobs for locals, profits for the companies involved and taxes for the BC and Alberta governments. To many, however, the nature and scope of the project is a disaster - in process and in consequence. If the plan goes ahead, the Gateway pipeline will be the largest petroleum pipeline project undertaken in North America in more than 50 years; at a cost of over $4 billion, it will be among the largest private infrastructure investments in B.C. history. Planned to begin construction in 2008, . . . that pipeline will employ 5000 full-time workers for two years, generating $25 million in taxes each year between B.C. and Alberta. In B.C. alone, the underground pipeline will be engineered to cross at least 1000 streams, rivers and lakes, each necessitating a separate file by Transport Canada.Read: Massive Gateway project faces serious legal obstacles.
