Visitando el estado de los plugins que tengo instalados en Wordpress, me encuentro con la siguiente sorpresa:
“There is a new version of Akismet available.”
Luego de actualizar la versión, me encuentro con que ahora puedes diferenciar el Spam que tienes tanto en los comentarios, como en los trackbacks.
En una nota anterior les mostramos un gráfico de cómo estaba creciendo el Spam en los comentarios de Wordpress, y como Akismet estaba luchando para evitarlo. Según sus estadísticas el 92 % de los comentarios que recibe un blog son Spam.

Hace tiempo que administro un foro con bastantes visitas y que recibe toneladas de spam, el único MOD para phpBB que me a ayudado con esto es el Spam Words con el hack para Akismet que hizo EADZ.
Como era un poco retorcido eso de modificar la modificación y hasta que salga phpBB 3 (y por tanto deje de funcionar) o un MOD exclusivo del Akismet (lleva en desarrollo mucho tiempo) decidí integrar en un MOD todo y de paso integrarlo en el control de registros y en el panel de control, a la par que añadía algunos fixes que había en el foro oficial.

Que hace el MOD:
Chequea cada nuevo mensaje que se envía contra Akismet (si se ha configurado una clave de API) y contra una lista de palabras tipicas, si se detecta spam o no se permite el envio o se permite pero se oculta el mensaje para que el admin lo borre o lo edite.
Chequa cada nuevo registro (firma, web…) de la misma manera que lo anterior solo que esta vez nunca se permite el
Se você ainda não tem esse plugin instalado, não pense duas vezes e já clique bara baixá-lo enquanto acaba de ler esse post. O único problema desse plugin é que para que ele funcione, você precisa de uma “API Key” do WordPress. Você pode conseguir a sua no site WordPress.com. Após conseguí-la (se cadastrando no site), entre na área administrativa, e em Plugins, entre na sub-área Configuração do Akismet. Lá, insira a API Key e pronto, o plugin estará funcionando.

Two weeks ago, I talked about ways to prevent comment spam on your blog. Most of them required installing some sort of plug-in or tinkering. Near the bottom of that post I briefly mentioned a Greasemonkey script that can make your weekly task of moderating spam comments much more efficient.
The script is called Auntie Akismet and it requires the Greasemonkey Firefox plug-in to be installed first (installation link). If you don’t have Greasemonkey installed, I highly recommend it since it can run a lot of scripts to modify behavior of different sites. For example, it can integrate Google Reader into your Gmail.

What Auntie Akismet does is truncate your spam comments so that no comment will be longer than a line. Most of the time, you can judge by the first line of a comment whether or not it is spam. Spam is a big problem these days. Spammers use advanced bots that can post thousand of spam messages on your forum, your blog, or any other type of site that allows the user to post messages or comments. The bots are becoming more and more advanced.
A few years ago it was easy to stop this type of spam using methods like CAPTCHA but now the bots have sophisticated ocr algorithms that can easily detect the obfuscated characters in an image so that’s not a protection anymore.
If you run a forum with phpbb you will have to install a few mods to protect it against spammers. If you don’t do anything you will get hundreds or thousands of spam messages a day, you’ll want to bang your head on to the wall trying to keep up and delete the messages and your forum users will most probably leave your forum before you’ll manage to get rid of all that spam.

After implementing Akismet spam verification into our comments and trackbacks, I am glad to report that we have had a spam free environment.
So how effective has it been? Well in the last month our normal spam protection methods have been able to stop 1158 spam comments and 55 were able to get through (the 55 is the total of spam comments that were missed and valid comment submissions). Akismet was able to identify and block all the spam that came through. In addition to the spam comments it blocked, it also stopped a total of 2033 instances of trackback spam.
So here is a good recipe to protect your blog from spam comment and trackbacks:

While going through my Google Reader, i stumbled upon a blog post at Paul Stamatiou’s on the importance of periodically checking the Akismet anti-spam service in the Wordpress pannel.
Akismet is a wordpress plugin that is aimed to reduce comment and trackback spam. The plugin is bundled into the default Wordpress.org installation, however ti requires the Wordpress API key to get activated (API key is avaialable after signing up with Wordpress.com).
Today, i logged to my Wordpress 2.1 CP, went to Comments>> Akismet spam, and was surprised to see that around 5 out of my 15 “spam” comments were fully legitimate.
Lesson learned: check your Akismet spam periodically ( i would say every other day) as it might have spammed legitimate stuff.
My two cents on this.

Andy Beard wrote an article a while back about the potential problems of using so called “collective intelligence” to power spam and comment filters on email systems and blogs.
