The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board has dropped a defamation case against fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar.Shoaib had alleged that Nasim Ashraf had demanded payments to allow him to play in the new Indian Premier League.He made the comments shortly after being banned from playing for making comments critical of the PCB.Mr Ahsraf says Shoaib has apologised for making the allegations and withdrawn them. A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appellate tribunal on Sunday suspended a five-year ban on controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for a month so that he could participate in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The tribunal, headed by former High Court judge Aftab Farrukh, accepted a plea from Akhtar’s lawyers that the ban should be suspended temporarily so that the pacer can play in the lucrative IPL. A PCB disciplinary committee, headed by Lt Gen (r) Munir Hafeez, banned Akhtar last month for several incidents of indiscipline. The International Cricket Council (ICC) last month agreed to penalise bowlers for sending down a no-ball by allowing the batsman to take a free hit off the next ball without being dismissed in one-dayers. Pakistan fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif look set to escape any further doping sanctions after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it was unable to hear their case. In a statement released today, CAS said it was forced to dismiss an appeal brought by the World Anti-Doping Agency since the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) does not recognise the court in its regulations. Shoaib and Asif were handed two-year and one-year bans in November 2006 by the PCB's Anti-Doping Commission after testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone, but the punishment was controversially lifted one month later by the board's Anti-Doping Appeals Committee. Announcing its decision "with considerable regret", CAS said its rules "require that a direct reference to the CAS be contained in the statutes or regulations of the body whose decision is being appealed." PAKISTAN captain Shoaib Malik said the return of fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar would boost the team for its one-off match against archrivals India in Scotland next month.
"Akhtar is a proven match-winner and his return has strengthened our bowling attack," the recently appointed Malik told reporters Tuesday before the team's departure for Scotland.
Pakistan face India in a one-day international in Glasgow on July 3 and then play Scotland at Edinburgh on July 1 during the short tour.
Batsman Younis Khan, currently playing for Yorkshire in English county cricket, will join the 14-man squad in Scotland.
Malik said the squad trained extensively at a Pakistan army base in Abbottabad for two weeks where Akhtar found his rhythm. The paceman missed the 2007 World Cup held in the Caribbean.
"Akhtar is very vital for our team and bowled at full throttle in the two practice matches. I'm very hopeful he will give his best against India and Scotland,'' said Malik.
