The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board has dropped a defamation case against fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar.Shoaib had alleged that Nasim Ashraf had demanded payments to allow him to play in the new Indian Premier League.He made the comments shortly after being banned from playing for making comments critical of the PCB.Mr Ahsraf says Shoaib has apologised for making the allegations and withdrawn them. A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appellate tribunal on Sunday suspended a five-year ban on controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for a month so that he could participate in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The tribunal, headed by former High Court judge Aftab Farrukh, accepted a plea from Akhtar’s lawyers that the ban should be suspended temporarily so that the pacer can play in the lucrative IPL. A PCB disciplinary committee, headed by Lt Gen (r) Munir Hafeez, banned Akhtar last month for several incidents of indiscipline. It is pertinent to mention that last week the tribunal allowed Akhtar to play outside Pakistan but the Indian authorities refused to permit him to take part in the IPL unless the ban was lifted.Aftab announced the decision here at the National Cricket Academy

THE Pakistan Cricket Board banned fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar today for 13 international matches and fined him 3.4 million rupees $63,000 for hitting a teammate with a bat. Akhtar struck fellow fast bowler Mohammad Asif after team practice in Johannesburg before the start of the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup last month. He was expelled from the team and sent back home. "He has been banned for 13 international matches consecutively - it will start from the first Twenty20 match in South Africa" last month, the board's chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi said. "Akhtar's appeal has been accepted and the fine is set aside as Akhtar was not properly served the notice on the right address," said Moin Afzal, a member of the appeals committee. "The case has been remanded back to manager Talat Ali for a fresh inquiry," he said. The fast bowler was earlier fined 100,000 rupees ($1650) for leaving a training camp in Karachi earlier this month, and 200,000 rupees ($3300) for snubbing a subsequent disciplinary hearing. But Akhtar said he had not been given advance notice of the hearing, having only been told after the fine was imposed. He also pleaded that he had told captain Shoaib Malik that he was leaving the camp. The International Cricket Council (ICC) last month agreed to penalise bowlers for sending down a no-ball by allowing the batsman to take a free hit off the next ball without being dismissed in one-dayers. The law will be tested on an experimental basis and is already allowed in a different form in Twenty20 games "I don't support this law because already life is tough for the bowlers. It is nonsense. Pakistan fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif look set to escape any further doping sanctions after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it was unable to hear their case. In a statement released today, CAS said it was forced to dismiss an appeal brought by the World Anti-Doping Agency since the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) does not recognise the court in its regulations. Shoaib and Asif were handed two-year and one-year bans in November 2006 by the PCB's Anti-Doping Commission after testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone, but the punishment was controversially lifted one month later by the board's Anti-Doping Appeals Committee. Announcing its decision "with considerable regret", CAS said its rules "require that a direct reference to the CAS be contained in the statutes or regulations of the body whose decision is being appealed."
