South African Airways (SAA) is to continue expanding its route network across Africa and adding capacity to existing routes, while cementing its membership with the Star Alliance, in order to turn itself into the leading airline on the continent, says company CEO Khaya Ngqula."Our plans for Africa are to keep with our mandate to be an African carrier with a global reach," he said at the airline's headquarters at OR Tambo International Airport outside Johannesburg on Wednesday."We are planning to add capacity so we have more flights and destinations to our African route network criss-crossing the continent."Two additional flights per week to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania were recently launched, while one additional flight per week to Luanda, Angola has been introduced to the schedule.

A federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit filed by a group of imams against US Airways and a Minneapolis airport can proceed. U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery said in a 41-page opinion late yesterday that the imams, who say they were discriminated against when they were removed from a flight last year, have a plausible claim that their constitutional rights may have been violated. The imams “have adequately stated a claim” that airport police may have “seized plaintiffs in violation of their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures,” Judge Montgomery ruled. That’s what British Airways (BA) provoked this week when it announced — with no warning — that starting November 6 it no longer will transport “unsuitable” items on its fleet of aircraft. The list includes canoes, hang gliders, pole-vaulting poles, javelins (!) and, yes, surfboards. Surfboards??? Dude, what is BA thinking? While the global community of javelin throwers is tiny, surfers number in the thousands. And they are not happy. A spokesperson for the British Surfing Association (BSA) said she was “extremely shocked” by the decision, especially as some boards weigh much less than many items that were not included in the ban. “We’d find it extremely hard to believe that the average short board would be more difficult to handle when compared to a double bass and a full bag of golf clubs.” And there’s the rub. The Royal First Lounge at Bangkok is very impressive - better even than Qatar Airways Premium Terminal at Doha in my opinion. There are nice private rooms to relax in (photo shown), sleeping areas, shower suites and a full service menu. The lounge staff were extremely attentive and were constantly offering to bring me food and drink. They also made me an appointment to visit the Royal Orchid Spa where I had a nice complimentary neck and shoulder massage. When the time came for me to board my connecting flight, I was personally escorted all the way to the aircraft.
