Fly CLEAR: The fast pass for airports
Here's what wears me down: the check-in line, the let me check-your-baggage-for-weapons line, the check-your-boarding-pass line, the security line, the customs line, and the taxi line. While a business- or first-class ticket enables some hopscotching, not all airports allow it. Instead, if you're traveling this winter (and hopefully you will be), enroll in the Clear Registered Traveler program, a virtual security express lane. The $100 annual membership includes a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) vetting fee, fingerprinting, and an iris scan. For now, the program (which already counts more than 36,000 members) is up and running in Ohio's Cincinnati International, Indiana's Inianapolis International, New York's JFK International Terminal 7, Florida's Orlando International, and California's San Jose International. Another system that might speed things up is Eye-ticket, which has implemented iris-recognition programs in London's Heathrow, Frankfurt's Flughafen,

      Crime in Airports Study
A study was made recently to determine the average crime rate at international airports around the world. The study made use of an ordinary-looking man standing in the airport terminal and reading a newspaper. He had an empty briefcase next to him which he would ignore. Observers then recorded how long it took for the briefcase to be snatched. At Brussels, the case was stolen within 4 minutes and 20 seconds. At Washington DC, it was stolen within 3 minutes and 16 seconds. At Heathrow, the briefcase was snatched in less than 2 minutes. In New York, the case was stolen within 1 minute and 5 seconds and in Los Angeles, it took only 43 seconds before the case was snatched. The experiment was going to be carried out at Johannesburg International Airport in South Africa, but the people conducting the study were hijacked on the way there.

The latest profit report for the Airports of Thailand (AOT) shows that fiscal year 2006/07 wasn’t as good as the last, with 90% fall in profit largely due to depreciation and massive maintenance costs.Profit for the year ending on the 30th of September, 2007 came in at THB1.09 billion (USD33 million) sharply down when compared to the same period ending in 2006 which achieved THB10.5 billion. This lukewarm result came even though AOT recorded a 20% surge in revenue profits, which were boosted from charging airlines more in airport fees. But any gains made in that area where negated due to costs lifting by a whopping 91%.According to a statement made by AOT, this was largely attributed to depreciation and maintenance at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.News of the smaller profit saw AOT shares fall by 0.86% on close of trading on the day of the announcement.

Do airports need a Private Investigator to investigate the safety?
Last week I am sure you heard about Boeing Bosses spying on their employees. I guess they don’t trust the people working for them. In some cases employees have gone off and told the media about new projects Boeing has been working on. They have hired private investigators not only to monitor there emails but [...]

Fly CLEAR: The fast pass for airports
Here's what wears me down: the check-inline, the let me check-your-baggage-for-weapons line, the check-your-barding-pass line, the security line, the customs line, and the taxi line. Another system that might speed things up is Eye-ticket, which has implemented iris-recognition programs in London's Heathrow, Frankfurt's Flughafen, an

Jake and Reese Snog in Airports
BOO! So just when it seemed like Jake and Reese were totally done-zo, they were seen holding hands and smooching at LAX yesterday. Reasons why this sucks: 1. Greasy Reesey is going to taint him with her wicked ways. 2. When is Jake going to have time to buy me expensive presents and take me to nice dinners when is busy being in a relationship with Reese Witherspoon? 3. At least when he was dating Kirsten Dunst I still had a chance. Let’s just call this a sad attempt at a promotional stunt to help a movie that is failing miserably. And yes I understand the hypocrisy of loving someone whom I am completely convinced is gay, but at least if he likes the men-folk then I won’t feel as bad when he doesn’t return my (borderline creepy) affection.

China To Subsidize Small Airports To Boost Regional Air Travel
Beijing, China (AHN) - To boost regional air travel, China's Civil Aviation Authority is offering subsidies to small and medium-sized airports. The subsidy will help airports that handle less than 5 million passengers and service flights shorter than 600 kilometers, officials said.Around 80 percent of China's 142 airports qualify for the subsidy, but it excludes air routes between Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and selected popular tourist destinations.

      Australia airports reap travel riches
AUSTRALIA'S two largest listed airport funds yesterday unveiled record earnings on the back of soaring passenger traffic. Macquarie Airports increased its interim profit more than fourfold to $953 million as passenger traffic across its asset portfolio rose more than 5 per cent. The impressive rise in the MAP bottom line was enhanced by the sales of the fund's stakes in Rome and Birmingham airports.

      Spending Time at Airports
Trying to get to Burbank this afternoon but ended up stuck in the Cedar Rapids and now in Denver. A bunch of thunderstorms are to blame. They delayed our plane coming in from Chicago, and then we had to fly around a huge thuderstorm on the way to Denver (which was quite beautiful in size and electrical activity). While picking my nose (and the Internet) at the Cedar Rapids airport, my traveling companion (and ScribeStorm’s HD-DVD developer) pointed out some odd things. First the free and secret code (a bit of a triple oxymoron): It took awhile to figure out why the Chicken Citrus Salad costs 55 cents more than the other salads:

Being in the service business, I need to try to keep myself available to my clients - anytime, anywhere. I fly a lot. As you know, The FAA still does not allow you to use a cell phone a plane and although many airlines have talked about it, Wifi (or Ethernet) still isn’t an option in the air either. During layovers, I almost always find myself checking my email and answering a mailbox full of voicemails… Some airports have updated their facilities to include WiFi Internet (which costs at least $10) and provide kiosks to setup a “mobile office” to get business done, but MANY have not! With the iPhone in hand, I no longer have to pull out the PowerBook, find a power outlet and pay an outrageous rate just to answer my emails. My clients love it - the time it takes me to respond to an email has dropped from hours to minutes. My problem is the EDGE network is still just a little too slow to really be useful and FAST for me to respond quickly when travelling - so

Read and Rate Airports at Flagxo
Flagxo.com is an interesting user generated content site that allows users to read and rate airports. Although in need for more content, the site has potential to give great travel tips and transit advice for new visitors to airports around the world. The site has a nice word cloud and links to Most Posts, Most Useful and User Find. The site allows users to rate airports on a scale of 1 to 10 in areas such as Power Plugs and Wi-Fi. Averages are then added and each airport gets an overall average. Flagxo.com is somewhat useless until more users start using it. But like I said, it has a ton of potential. Airports Warned of 'Dry Run' Attacks
Airport security officers around the nation have been alerted by federal officials to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft, based on four curious seizures at airports since last September. The unclassified alert was distributed on July 20 by the Transportation Security Administration to federal air marshals, its own transportation security officers and other law enforcement agencies. The seizures at airports in San Diego, Milwaukee, Houston and Baltimore included "wires, switches, pipes or tubes, cell phone components and dense clay-like substances," including block cheese, the bulletin said. "The unusual nature and increase in number of these improvised items raise concern."Security officers were urged to keep an eye out for "ordinary items that look like improvised explosive device components."A federal official familiar with the document confirmed the authenticity of the NBC posting but declined to be identified by name because it has not bee

      Berlin Airports
Berlin has three airports, two for international flights, and one mainly for domestic flights. They are supposed to be merged at some time in the future into one large airport (they say 2011. You can read all about it here). Until then, you have Schoenfeld in the east (some 20km from the center), Tegel in the middle (some 8km from the center) and Tempelhof, which is supposed to be the oldest commercial airport in the world (built in 1923) and the first airport connected to a subway network (1927), but is not profitable, and scheduled to close on 2008. Anyway, it does only domestic flights within Germany and neighboring countries. (more…)

India to have 35 new airports by 2010
By 2010 India will have 35 new airports to cope with the rising demand for air travel. India currently has 133 airports that include 14 international terminals. Speaking at a seminar organised by the Foundation for Aviation and Sustainable Tourism (FAST), V P Agarwal, member (planning), Airports Authority of India (AAI), said that AAI would invest Rs40,000 crore in the next five years on developing airport infrastructure. He said the growth of low-fare airlines and cheaper airfares would encourage road and rail passengers to shift to air travel. To cope with rising demand the AAI had planned the rapid vacation of runways and interconnecting all major airports with city centres by metro trains.

Threats in Canadian Airports: OK, As Long As They’re Funny
Via Reuters: The Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority, trying to clamp down on screeners who alert police every time they hear alarming words, has issued a bulletin urging staff to show more discretion. A person who announces “You better look through my suitcase carefully, because there’s a bomb in there”, “I am going to set fire to this airplane with this blowtorch” or “The man in seat 32F has a machine gun” will still be arrested. But someone who remarks “Your hockey team is going to get bombed (badly beaten) tonight”, “Hi Jack!” or “You don’t need to frisk me, I’m not carrying a weapon” will first be warned about their behavior. Like stand-up comedy, it’s really all about the delivery. It’s not necessarily what you say, but how you say it. So as long as you make it sound funny, they’ll likely let you off the hook. Let’s just hope the terrorist training camps don&rs

      Delays at UK airports
I’ve read about possible delays at UK airports. Immigration officials report that it’s taking more than twice as long to scan the the passports of travellers arriving in the UK. due to the installation of new equipment. New rules for entering Spain require that Spanish authorities are given full details of all passengers before the plane can take off for Spain.
