Just got back from a run outside near my apartment complex, and I am feeling ... alright. I wouldn't say that I'm a runner, or even that I like running, but every once in a while I do feel a sense of accomplishment for having run farther and better than I ever have before. And I think it makes my heart happy.Speaking of happy, my best friend Zack Bogaczyk and his wife Liz stopped in here yesterd

Plan enables travelers to make, receive calls through onboard base stationApril 8, MSNBCBRUSSELS, Belgium - You can use your cell phone in the skies over Europe as early as this summer under new European Union rules — allowing travelers to stay in touch but also raising the cringe-inducing prospect of being stuck next to a chatterbox at 30,000 feet.Announcing the guidelines Monday, EU officials said they expect several Europe-based airlines to move within the next few months to launch services, effectively making the 27-nation bloc the first region in the world to scrap bans on the use of cell phones in the sky. They insisted that the new rules would not heighten the risk of terrorism or interfere with flight instruments, explaining the system, relying on European GSM technology, has been

UK regulator Ofcom has given approval for use of cell phones on airplanes flying in European airspace and has released plans that will allow airlines to offer mobile services on UK-registered aircrafts. The cost of making a cell phone call from an air plane will be higher than making one from the ground. Cell phones can be used on air planes that have reached at least 3,000 meters. However, airlines looking to offer this service must still satisfy other regulators about how the hardware will be used. The decision to offer in flight cell phone services now falls to individual airlines which must over-come other regulatory hurdles before the technology is considered to be fully approved.

The biggest thing that most associate with the re-entry of a spacecraft into the Earth’s atmosphere is heat and friction. To that end, one of the biggest concerns for the space shuttle fleet is the integrity of the heat shield to allow re-entry without catastrophic failure such as the Columbia suffered.

The F-35 Lightning II, allegedly the most advanced fighter in the world, has been tried for the first time by a military service pilot. Lt. Col. James "Flipper" Kromberg of the U.S. Air Force, who can be seen in the video wearing one of those scary demon helmets, took off from Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth plant, flying the wonderplane through different altitudes and situations. His verdict:
"The aircraft flew very well, exceeding my expectations," Kromberg said. "I was surprised by the amount of power on the takeoff roll. And the handling, particularly with the gear up, was phenomenal. The aircraft was very stable flying in formation with another airplane. It was really a joy to fly."
So there you go: two thumbs up from Señor Flipper. I don't know about you, but I'm happy that the $40 b

The first instrument you notice upon listening to Something About Airplanes is the cello on "Bend to Squares." It fades out, soon enough replaced by the familiar electric guitar, but it sets this album's offbeat mood. Experimentation and pop hooks strike a perfect balance on this debut from the Bellingham, Washington-based Death Cab for Cutie. The quartet follow in the fine tradition of area emo-pop bands like Modest Mouse, 764-HERO, and Built to Spill, but it's hard not to notice bits of Quasi and the Beatles popping up. Of course, the Death Cab formula is a bit different--"President of What?" is driven by Farfisa, not Fender; "Champagne from a Paper Cup" is a slow-burner--there's not much pop glee found in a song that begins "I think I'm Drunk Enough to Drive You Home Now"; and--every once in a while--the oddball vocal sample kicks in (presumably from a long-forgotten movie, a la vintage Jawbreaker). It all makes for a brilliant debut and a fine addition to the canon of Northw

According to Les Dorr of the FAA, the FAA will not allow use of mobile phones on airplanes in the foreseeable future. The comments came as he told UK’s Telegraph Travel this week that proposals to repeal the ban on in-flight mobiles has caused such an outcry from the American public that the proposal has been dropped.Americans are very resistance to in-flight mobile because of fears that cell phones interfere with the controls of a plane. In the UK, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) found that between January 2000 and August 2005 twenty incidents of airplane malfunction were linked to the use of cell phones. While earlier this year, the European Aviation Safety Agency gave the green light for in-flight mobile technology provided by the communications company ON Air, whose new system will allow mobiles to transmit less powerfully and avoid possible interference.Airlines planning to allow in-flight cell use include Ryanair, Tap Air Portugal, Air France, Emirates, AirAsia and
When i was a kid, i went to R/C airplane shows at my local airport to see aircraft of this size and quality compete and show their stuff, dreaming that someday i could fly something like that. Now, 15 years later and knowing fully well that i'd prob crash one of these expensive toys before even leaving the tarmac, i am still amazed at how cool these machines are.Gizmodo: Link!

If evolution is true like you say it is then why did we need to invent the airplane? Explain that!
Ha! You got me
I’ve been on a bit of a posting sabbatical for the past week, events have conspired against me, internet has been playing up and I took on the rather arduous task of reading my way through Steven Weinberg’s ‘First Three Minutes‘.
Great book but I’d have more chance of decoding the Lorenz cipher with a fork than understanding the base concepts contained in it. Actually, it’s very good and worth buying, but be prepared for some frustration if you’re as badly versed in physics and maths as I am.
normal posting will resume once I manage to untangle my brain.
evolution, funny
Its never too late to shop for the holidays. If you wait till the last minute, you might find yourself spending too much or just buying something without thinking. I came across a site selling RC airplanes which are remote controlled airplanes and I thought it would be a great gift for a teenage boy or even a girl who enjoys playing with such things. It might even work as a gift for a grown man for we all know that men are just big boys at the end of the day. Personally, I’m taken in by these too. Then again, I enjoy tinkering around with these things, so I know I’d love it.
I have always been a fan of radio control; cars, robots, computers now planes. As a child I had several RC Cars that were a bunch of fun. At the time airplanes were too expensive and the technology was not all that great. I had left RC altogether for the past 10 years or so.
Recently my Dad sent me an AirHogs Aero Ace and boy I am glad he did. They are a ton of fun. You can get them at WalMart or Target for $30. Without a doubt the best toy for the price. They have a 2-axis controler for throttle and lef-right. There are two small motors setup in a push configuration. The throttle controls the prop speed and the left-right governs the speed to allow it to pitch side to side. They fly great and take a lot of abuse. Here are some pictures:
As you can see it can take some abuse. The plane itself charges from the 4 AA batteries in the transmitter. It is an amazing use of technology. More to
Back by popular demand - Friday! Such a nice day to put before Saturday. Fridays are for fun, well at least on my blog they are. I have written about everything from socks to fruitcake. The next logical step is to try it all in one post. I won't do it but the idea does put a smile on my face.
The title for this may not seem like a good fit but it makes sense to me. Sometimes friends and family members give me ideas for Friday blog posts. The title comes from their suggestions. I put it out there so they know I am paying attention.
I decided that I would like to try a rerun. They do that on television all the time and I don't see why it can't be done on a blog. Last December I wrote a post about fruitcake. The post got a lot of traction. Kristal Kraft - Denver's top Realtor has often been invited to my blog for fruitcake, she really hates fruitcake. I just send her a note
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is still holding firm the decision to not allow cell phone usage on airplanes. It has spent the past couple of years re-examining the current rules, which require cell phones to be turned off once the plane leaves the ground. The FCC's concern is that the use of the cell phones in the air might interfere with cell phone networks on the ground, however, the commission says there still isn't enough information available on whether that would be the case.FAA rules also restrict the use of cell phones and other portable electronic devices on planes to make sure they don't interfere with the aircraft's navigation and communication systems. Some international airlines are working with technology companies to allow cell phones onboard. Last November, AeroMobile, the provider of mobile phone services to airlines, announced Emirates as the world’s first airline to introduce in-flight mobile phone use for passengers.
Cait and I are bored. We go through our usual craft stuff, try a little origami, and decide we’d rather build paper airplanes.
Here are some great instructions for planes that fly really straight and really far.
Due to a few recent fires among commercial airplanes, the US government is considering new restrictions on how passengers carry lithium batteries used to power laptop computers and cell phones onboard. The Department of Transportation is expected to propose further restrictions later this year after restricting bars of bulk shipments of some lithium batteries on passenger planes. The government is not planning to ban batteries from carry-on luggage, however, new rules may prohibit them from checked bags.According to Bob Richard, deputy chief of the DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration, "We recognize that the American public wants to be able to carry their batteries and electronic equipment aboard aircraft, but we have to weigh the safety issues.....Any fire aboard an aircraft is unacceptable."
My daughter is doing just fine again, so here I am, back a work today. Unfortunately I don't have that much time on my hands today (work didn't do itself yesterday), so I'm taking the easy way out and posting a couple of tracks found in the mailbox this morning. They come from a Seattle one-man project called Riding Paper Airplanes and the music is described as a combination of: "the subtle electronic nuances of The Postal Service and The Notwist with the bombastic anthem-pop of U2 and Ride." Not exactly a modest/humble description, though Homecoming Weekend In A Small Town is a pretty good one. But you can always judge that yourself!!+ Feathers+ Homecoming Weekend In A Small Town
The last two days have been a bit of a blur, my only real activity being sitting on airplanes and trying to catch some sleep when I could. I arrived in Nairobi last night nearly 45 minutes later than expected. The flight from Amsterdam was delayed, though I do not know why. I was one of only a few Americans on the flight. The others were a mix of Africans, Asians and Europeans. I have flown internationally by myself only once before - about a year and a half ago to London, where I met up with my husband, who was taking two weeks military leave from his Iraq deployment. I did not feel alone on that trip; I felt very alone traveling to Nairobi all by myself. It seemed to take forever for the baggage handlers to unload all the boxes, bags and suitcases. I must have waited for about an hour, all the while wondering how I would find Mark "Junior" Gaya, the Village Volunteers representative in Nairobi, in the throng of people waiting outside the baggage claim area. With my 63-pound sui
