With so many digital cameras on the market today it has almost become boring shopping for one. Thankfully, there is a new gadget on the market which promises to [...]
Now here’s a rare old treat, my friend. Just for the weekend. One of Hunter S. Thompson’s favourite songs, and it’s not hard to see why.

The people who love flying are eager to know if they can build their ultralight airplane yourself. For the inexperienced people this may seem totally insane, but the thruth is there are thousands of enthusiasts who built airplanes themselsves. There are two ways to do this. The most popular way is to use ultralight aircraft kit. Building an ultralight airplane with an ultralight aircraft kit is ach

Question: "Barrack Obama and John McCain are on an airplane. It crashes into a mountainside. Who survives?"Answer: "The Country."Believe it or not, this is how our Sunday school lesson started yesterday. It worked. I admit, I laughed. It broke the ice and relaxed everyone's nerves before diving into a deeply divisive topic: the election of political officials.I've struggled this past year with my
PSI mommy makeovers came across a newsflash last week which told about a mommy giving birth in mid-air. Now that’s a story to tell your child! The baby was born en route a flight from Philippines to New York and was delivered by the dad who is a trained emergency medical worker (what luck!) and a Korean surgeon. Needless to say, the baby was born premature (2 months early) as most women don
I hate flying...now I hate it even more. That sucks, what if the person filming was the person in the planes wife or husband. I would crap my pants. Check out the madness when this Boeing 747 Gets Hit By Lightning.
I don’t ever expect airplane food to be good so Lufthansa gave me what I expected. I chose the pasta (with canned mushrooms) which was terribly over-cooked. The bread was cold from sitting in the fridge, the cheese was bland, but the fruit was pretty good. The brownie was also edible, not too sweet. The veggies looked so sad and they were served with dressing as if to say, this is a salad. Not!L

Mobile phone calls will be allowed on planes flying in European airspace under new European Commission rules. It means that mobiles could be used once a plane has reached an altitude of 3,000m or more. The first services could launch next month. Viviane Reding, the EU telecoms commissioner, has warned operators to keep the cost of calls made on planes at a reasonable level. The decision to offer the services now falls to individual airlines. However, there are other regulatory hurdles to overcome before the technology is considered to be fully approved. The European Aviation Safety Agency still needs to approve any hardware that would be installed in aircraft to ensure that it did not interfere with other flight systems. The plan is to install small mobile phone base stations, cal

Whoever has the proper knowledge in getting super cheap airplane tickets is a wise traveler indeed. While most travelers want to cut their travel expenses to the lowest possible amount, only a small number of travel goers know exactly what it takes to really find those super cheap flight deals.A common traveler would probably stick with the whole routine of getting a travel agent to supervise his/her travel details. This is good but this does not always guarantee that you'll be getting the best airfare deals available out there. If you have a certain travel agent whom you've known for quite a long time already, that person may end up letting you in on some perks and privileges, but this possibility takes time and also usually comes with a price.A cheaper alternative and a more efficient ap

In volume 4 of Singapore Institute of Aerospace Engineers newsletter, Richard Khoo talks about the use of composites on aircraft.
Composite materials offer many advantages over traditional materials in the construction of aircrafts. The most obvious of all is weight reduction, which indirectly means increased range, lower fuel cost and higher payload. The Airbus A380 uses composites for 25% of
The Biggest plane in the world is An-225 Mriya (Dream) NATO reporting name: Cossack. It's transport plane of the superbig load-carrying capacity. At present is the greatest, heavy and load-lifting plane in the world.Necessity of creation of aviation transport system for the project of a reusable spaceship "Boorun" (Snow-storm) was the reason of construction An-225.At present An-225 is the heaviest and load-lifting plane, when or rising in air. The unique plane surpassing An-225 on wingspan, it Hughes H-4 Hercules which rose in air only once.It is developed in a bureau of O.K.Antonova (Kiev, Ukraine).Once I saw this plane when it did a turn, the angle was huge, speed was slow, looks like it will fall, it's very big plane, it's true =)

Have you ever wondered how to get free airplane tickets? The airline industry is notorious for offering airplane tickets are ridiculously high prices. Yet smart travelers know how to fly on the cheap and at little to no cost. With the rising costs of fuel, the airline industry is taking a beating. Airlines are struggling to make razor-thin profit margins while competing to keep airfares as low as possible. But it is getting more and more difficult to find reasonably priced airfare in this day and age, as airlines raise their prices.Airfares have increased significantly over the years. But did you know that there are ways to fly for free? For example:Give up your tickets on standby.Rack up airline miles using your credit cards.Redeem points for rental car, hotel, and previous airline flight
The airplane features a remote controlled, battery-powered propeller for extended flights. The remote will switch off the engine and let your high-flying glider adventure begin. Need more altitude? Flip the switch on the controller and the propeller fires up to help you climb again. Master banking turns and flying in different wind conditions as you carefully hone your skills. Recommended for ages 10 and above.

I did a post the other day, entitled, “Planes, Trains And Automobiles: The China Way,” extolling a James Fallows piece comparing “the Chinese way” with “the Japanese way.” Yesterday, I got a call from my friend and fellow Grinnell College alum, Paul Midler, who wanted to let me know he would be doing a post on his blog, The China Game, taking issue with Fallows. Midler’s post, entitled, “James Fallows Turns On His Television Set,” is now up and I am writing this post to take issue with it.
Real writers observe things others do not. Real writers see the same thing we all see and tell us about it in a way that makes us “see” it more clearly. Real writers tell us things we already knew but could not express. James Fallows is a real writer, yet despite this, or actually more likely because of this, Paul Midler does not like him writing about China. Writers say things I am thinking but have yet to crystallize or am inc
Who would have thought? Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal don’t strike me as one of those wild couples that would enjoy having sex in risky places, like public toilets or in the back of a car – but it looks like they’re not quite the tame couple we imagined. The Hollywood sweethearts allegedly spent more than ten minutes together inside an airplane bathroom recently, and I somehow doubt Jake was helping Reese with the clasp of her necklace or something similar.
I must admit, while I was researching this piece of news I was trying hard not to picture Renee and Jack having sex in an airplane bathroom – simply because I’ve had the misfortune to use the bathroom on a plane after a couple had used it as a private sex room and it’s not a memory I particularly wanted to re-visit. Celebrity or not, it’s still messy – and way too obvious for anyone to actually even pretend they didn’t understand what’s going on. Plus, it’
Q. Approximately how much petrol does an airplane carry?A. To begin with, correct the word “petrol” in the question. If the engine is just an internal burning machine as in cars then only a high quality petrol is used as fuel. The planes equipped with jet engines use only aerial kerosene. Though this kerosene is of high quality, is not petrol. After being squirted into the jet engine the kerosene burns explosively. The hot air produced of it forcefully threshes backward, and hence as per Newton’s law the plane gets a push. Boeing-747 (jumbo jet) uses up approximately nine liters of fuel in less than two seconds. But at the time of take-off it is filled up with 1,77,000 liters of fuel, and so the supply lasts for hours. (in 1946 one of the South African jumbo jet had had a non-stop fl

Hey everyone! I’m currently on a layover and I’m loving the cold weather! It’s actually in the upper 40s here and I love that I can wear my long winter coat! It really makes me feel like the holidays are near.
Anyway, the reason for this post is that I was involved in a situation on the plane today that I hope you never have to go through as a passenger.
A family was boarding the flight with a baby that looked to be about a year old. They had brought on board their own car seat and even purchased a plane seat to put it in. However, upon inspecting the car seat, we found that they had removed the stickers from the side of the car seat that say it’s been approved by the FAA for aircraft use.
Even though it was your typical GRACO car seat that we all know is okay to use, that sticker HAS to be there. If we allowed the family to use it, we could get fined big time. In fact, my sister who works for another airline said there was recently a ghost rider on her flight
I wanted to share a networking story with you that happened to me on Friday night.I was coming home from a second round interview that took place in MN. The plane ride home to Boston was going to be somewhere around the line of 2 hours...and I was looking forward to getting home after the long day that started at 6AM. As I boarded the plane, I was the first one to sit on the aisle seat of my row. I was there for about 5 minutes when another person came and sat in the window seat of the same row and side I was on.He seemed like a cool guy so I said something around the lines of, "Long week this week?" He said, "Yes...aren't they all?"I then went on to say "Yeah I had a pretty busy week myself," then asked him what he did. He mentioned he was in sales with a company that helps high school students find their path after graduation. He is one of the salespeople that facilitates in implementing the curriculum to the various schools around the country. I was intrigued with his answer and as
Some fun things to do the next time you’re on one of those long international flights to kill time…
1. Pinch the stewardess’ butt as she passes.
2. When two people kiss in the in flight movie, belch real loud.
3. When there’s any nudity, hoot really loudly for a few minutes.
4. Fart loudly and act shocked, looking around to see who did it.
5. Fiddle around with the emergency exit, then ask a fellow passenger if he has a crowbar.
6. Hijack the cockpit and, over the loudspeaker, announce that the first class passengers and luggage are to switch places.
7. Run down the aisle screaming, “He’s got a bomb! He’s got a bomb!”.
8. Go into the bathroom and make rude bodily noises, then come out looking refreshed.
9. “Accidental” soda spill on the dork next to you.
10. Give someone a coin, saying “Heads, I detonate the bomb. Tails, I don’t”.11. Go into the bathroom, drop your pants, then come out, yelling “We&rsq

Ok, I'm having a hard time with the parent/child classes. I go because Elle really likes it but I fricken hate it. I can acknoledge that this is totally my own issue and my own fault. If everyone in the class is getting along great except for me then I can accept that I'm the one with the problem. But I don't know how to fix it and I don't know how to make it easier so I just have to suck it up and tough it out.See, the thing is that I actually like a couple of the moms in the class. Some of them seem really nice. The problem in the class is not with them, it's with Adoption Guy and that fact that everyone else in the class seems to think that Adoption Guy is just as awesome as he claims to be. I don't understand this. How does everyone else hear this guy say the same things I hear him saying and not think he's a total jackass? Even the mother who a few weeks ago seemed to dislike this guy now seems to think he's the neatest thing since sliced bread.Last week I was tal

Some time ago I found the site SeatGuru.com. It helps you plan your trip by giving you the layout of each aircraft from numerous airlines. They help you know the difference between superior and substandard seats which is great when booking online. I’ve used this a few times while booking my flights, you should check it out!
(If you want to read about reviews with different airlines check out the topic Airline Review.)
Using SeatGuru and checking online exactly 24 hours in advance could score you the ultimate seat at the regular price! I always set my alarm 24 hours in advance (even if it’s 4am…) to make sure I can change my seat if needed and this has definitely made my flights more pleasurable. (more…)
Airplane accidents are devastating tragedies. Almost every year, these accidents become the headlines of news stories. In all cases, lots of lives are being taken which brings trauma to their surviving dependents. Losing you love ones from such incidents is really a painful experience. I am writing this blog entry in a hotel lobby. I did a funeral for a family member today and I am returning home via the friendly (yet highly paranoid) skies tomorrow. By the way, the recording that repeats every ten minutes at the airport reminds us that the terror alert is orange--so be sure to keep your liquids in a resealable sandwich baggie, turn in that suspicious looking dude who just put his luggage down in order to pee, and do wear your rapture bloomers.I have been reading two books while flying. I caught myself laughing out loud more than once. While on land, heavier reading is in order.I am really enjoying The View from the Center of the Universe: Discovering Our Extraordinary Place in the Cosmos. This book provides an overvi
If you're a fan of flight/combat sims then check out Kotaku's contest for next weeks release of Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (エースコンバット6 解放への戦火 Ēsu Konbatto Shikkusu Kaihō e no Senka) video game for the Xbox 360. All you have to do is make a "rad" paper airplane and the loot is yours, it includes the game itself, autographed photo (from game's producer and director), faceplates, and a flightstick set. They mentioned cut and glue, so I guess that includes paper crafts/paper models.Make A Rad Paper Airplane - [Site]
As our family gets ready for our first airplane trip with children, I am really stressing out. I haven’t been on a plane since my honeymoon, seven years ago. Not only do I feel unprepared about airplane flight in general (and post-9.11 too!), but the thought of traveling with my 2-year-old and 4-year-old is causing me serious worry. Please leave me a comment if you have any advice, words of wisdom, or comfort for this worried Mama. I’ve also done some research on the internet and compiled the following list of helpful information about air travel with kids:
