With this week being National Peanut Festival week, I thought it would be a good time to examine the role agriculture plays in the Dothan and Wiregrass area economy. After all, agriculture was the principal industry in our area for decades and continues to play a major role in our regions livelihood. According to the 2002 census, agriculture is a $803 million dollar industry in the 2nd Congressional District of Alabama.
I recently had the privilege to hear William Birdsong of the Alabama Extension Services Wiregrass Experiment Station in Headland talk about this very issue. ACCORDING to the data released by the study "Invest India Incomes and Savings Survey 2007', homeownership in India is the highest among the people engaged in the agriculture sector.
Of total homeownership in India, farmers and other agricultural workers make for 37.94%. The farmers with marketable surplus grab the top position among homeowners in India and even outnumber businessmen in cities. People in this category are believed to be earning Rs 90,000 a year.
Another interesting fact is that more than 80% of the homes are self financed. The farmers give entire credit to their ability to save which turned their dream of owning a home into reality. Housing loans also turn out to be the saviors providing them with financial aid for buying home. The loans from banks, lenders, and other financial institutions constitute 14% of all home purchases. Raw Milk WarningConsumers who purchased raw milk from Stump Acres Dairy of New Salem advised to immediately discard the raw milk and any products made with the raw milk due to potential salmonella contamination.Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized or homogenized. Consumers who reported drinking raw milk purchased from the dairy in July experienced gastrointestinal illness and have been diagnosed with salmonella. A recent laboratory test result confirmed the presence of salmonella in raw milk at the dairy.The departments of Agriculture and Health have asked Stump Acres Dairy to halt all sales of raw milk immediately.In February and March, raw milk purchased at Stump Acres Dairy was linked to cases of infection with salmonella typhimurium and sales were suspended.The shelf-life for raw milk is about 14 days but can be longer if the milk is frozen.
