Agricultural investment is decreasing as agricultural land areas are being reclaimed for other purposes, leaving farmers with no land for production. Therefore, it is imperative to work out a macro policy aimed at regenerating agriculture or subsidising farmers if they quit farming.

If it isn't broke, don't fix itThe Bush Administration wants to move a laboratory that until 2003 was managed by the Agriculture Department. The laboratory studies the highly contagious foot-and-mouth virus. The Homeland Security Department now runs the Plum Island facility and wants to move the laboratory from the isolated island to the United States mainland where exposure to livestock would be catastrophic to the agriculture industry. A United Kingdom government laboratory was blamed for a recent £80m foot-and-mouth disease outbreak so the risk is real. The Bush Administration has consistently illustrated clumsiness, ineptness and incompetence so why should their decision on such a risky issue be trusted now? The costs and risks from a possible outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease a

The political crisis in Comunist Occupied Rhodesia, aka Zimbabwe, entered its third week as Robert Mugabe refuses to release the results of a presidential election which he apparently lost. Movementfor Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangorai "fired" South Africanpresident Thabo Mbeki from his position as election moderator by calling for his resignation after Mbeki claimed that "there is no crisis in Zimbabwe".Throughout this crisis, Mugabe has played the race card. Before the March 29 elections, he vilified British government leaders and whites in Zimbabwe, claiming they were yearning for a return to colonial-era white privilege, calling them "pink noses" which he would smash with his fist.Following the vote three weeks ago, Mugabe again turned to the racial issue, telling Zimb

AGRICULTURE, The Next Big OpportunityDespite India's dominent position as a producer in word agriculture, India has a Meager 1.5% share of global agritrade. This is because both, productivity levels(yields) as well as the level of food processing in India, continues to languish below that of comparable geographies. Thus, the potential for growth in this sectior is huge and could in turn trigger growth of the intire economy, driving GDP growth. Recognizing this potential, the government has decided to step up investments in this sector, open it up to the private sector by premitting contract farming which should see the growth rate of the agricultural sector more than double over the next few years helping India achieve a GDP growth of 8%.India occupies a dominant position in world agriculture

Continued dry conditions in 2004–5 are expected to reduce output in the agricultural sector. Production of wheat, one of Australia’s major agricultural products, is expected to decline by 19 percent from the record 24.9 million ton harvest in 2003–4.Besides wheat, other significant agricultural products include barley, sugarcane, fruit, cattle, sheep, and poultry. Agriculture in such an area is bound to be limited, and can be divided broadly into three main types; that of the high northern slopes, that of the arid foothills, and that of the high southern slopes. Few people try to eke out a living on the northern slopes; those who do live either in small villages like Guejar Sierra, or else in isolated farmhouses. At lower altitudes olives and vines flourish, and small terraced plots, irrigated from tiny streams, supply all the vegetables needed, while a few cattle are kept and sheep and goats pastured on the hillsides. At higher altitudes it is too cold for olives or vines, and the staple crops are wheat, maize and potatoes, all grown on minute plots hacked out of the steep hillside and irrigated by tiny runnels led off from springs. Chestnuts give a measure of variety to local food supplies, and some sheep and goats are kept -- but they are rarely to be found above 8,000 feet, since there is little grass at this height. Methods of farming are p

With this week being National Peanut Festival week, I thought it would be a good time to examine the role agriculture plays in the Dothan and Wiregrass area economy. After all, agriculture was the principal industry in our area for decades and continues to play a major role in our regions livelihood. According to the 2002 census, agriculture is a $803 million dollar industry in the 2nd Congressional District of Alabama.
I recently had the privilege to hear William Birdsong of the Alabama Extension Services Wiregrass Experiment Station in Headland talk about this very issue. He did a great job of relating how intregal agriculture is to the Dothan area. Here is some of the information he shared with the Kiwanis Club of Dothan.
One of the main issues Birdsong pointed out that farmers are facing is pricing. Since 1980, market prices of the various farm commodities have changed little, while production costs have risen at a pace at least equal to, if not more than, the rate of in

Whether we like it or not genetic engineering is now a part of our lives. In fact it is a huge part of the agriculture world. Have you ever wondered how genetic engineering is affecting the agriculture industry? Those corporations that are introducing genetically altered crops into the global food chain want you to believe that genetic engineering is a thorough science that is well understood and good for the human race. Actually nothing could be further from the truth. The term genetic engineering would make you think that moving genes from one organism to another is a straightforward procedure, however the reality is that genetic engineering is far from being a perfected science. In reality all of the plants genes are really a big black hole that’s genetic makeup is truly not understood. The genes of a plant are called its genome. What genetic engineering does is force this genome from its original black hole into another black hole which is the other plant in a hope that the new ge
good day everyone, lets go to business. despite the progress made in technology, philippines is still very much an agriculture based economy. a large share of labor is still tilling the lands. however, a trend is occurring for years where a number of land owners are offering their lands as "collateral" to borrow money. they will use the money maybe for sending their children to college or abroad. normally, they lease their land to individuals instead of banks, in order to avoid high interest rates. this trend is an opportunity for low risk investment.in hiligaynon we call this "prenda". in this arrangement, you lend the owner a certain amount of money in exchange for the exclusive use of his land for an open period of time. what you will earn will come from the produce of the land. this arr

ACCORDING to the data released by the study "Invest India Incomes and Savings Survey 2007', homeownership in India is the highest among the people engaged in the agriculture sector.
Of total homeownership in India, farmers and other agricultural workers make for 37.94%. The farmers with marketable surplus grab the top position among homeowners in India and even outnumber businessmen in cities. People in this category are believed to be earning Rs 90,000 a year.
Another interesting fact is that more than 80% of the homes are self financed. The farmers give entire credit to their ability to save which turned their dream of owning a home into reality. Housing loans also turn out to be the saviors providing them with financial aid for buying home. The loans from banks, lenders, and other financial institutions constitute 14% of all home purchases. However, self financing does not mean buying a completely mortgage free property.
There are many farmers who own homes but are planning to s

Do poor people tend to participate more/less in growth in agriculture than in growth in other sectors, and if so, when? If a focus on agriculture would tend to yield larger participation by the poor, but slower overall growth, which strategy would tend to have the largest payoff in terms of poverty reduction, and under which conditions? Rice farming in Indonesia is greatly affected by short-term climate variability and could be harmed significantly by long-term climate change, according to a new study by researchers at Stanford University, the University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin. "Agriculture is central to human survival and is probably the human enterprise most vulnerable to changes in climate," said lead author Rosamond Naylor, director of the Program on Food Security and the Environment at Stanford. "This is particularly true in countries such as Indonesia, with large populations of rural poor. Understanding the current and future effects of changes in climate on Indonesian rice agriculture will be crucial for improving the welfare of the country's poor."The authors also are working with Indonesian officials to develop longer-run strategies that address the anticipated effects of climate change on agriculture in the country. "Such strategies could include investments in water storage, developm

New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) The government is taking necessary steps to ramp up investments in the agricultural sector with various incentives, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said here Saturday.
According to a ministry statement, Pawar also said the government was taking adequate policy and regulatory measures to strengthen forward and backward linkages in the marketing sector.
Enlisting the steps taken by the government to support the agricultural sector, Pawar said taxes on processed food have already been reduced and a number of Agricultural Export Promotion Zones (AEZs) have been established, besides allowing foreign direct investment in food processing and single brand retailing.
The minister, who was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on ‘Contract Farming: Methods and Experiences’, also expressed his satisfaction over the fact that Indian business conglomerates like Reliance and Bharti are venturing in agricultural business and will help in realising the secto

Community Supported Agriculture: An actual decent site from the US Government on CSA's. If you are not supporting a CSA or if you are not familiar with the concept it is time to learn - and sign-up with your local CSA! From the site: "Community Supported Agriculture consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community's farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Typically, members or 'share-holders' of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer's salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm's bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production. Members also share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. By dire
