You know how most social networking sites are completely fluff, where you can collect thousands of virtual friends, pretend to hob nob with celebrities, etc? There is one social networking site that is different from the rest, that comes across as a serious networking site, where you would only add your real friends. And that is LinkedIn. It is so serious, I don't even link to it from my blog

As technologies such as Ajax and Web 2.0 contribute to the exponential growth of Web applications, the value of the application’s content plays an important and central role. I launched a new site this weekend. It is a WOW blog aggregator. What is a blog aggregator? It is a huge list of warcraft blogs compiled into one master RSS feed. So you can visit one site or subscribe to one feed to get a quick rundown on up to the minute blog posts relating to World of Warcraft. It is updated every 15 minutes or so, and right now I have around 150 blogs. That number will grow over time.
A few notes. I have taken care to make sure I am not pulling traffic from others. These blog entries are only very short teasers, with full and clear links to the actual blog owner and full entry. The entries are also not indexed by Google and such, so there is no issue regarding page rank and SEO.

When it comes to taking out car insurance you have to shop around for quotes. However shopping around and trying to find the cheapest deal yourself can take an enormous amount of time and effort. Even if you search yourself do you cannot be sure that you have accessed all lenders to get quotes. A far easier way to gather quotes from the whole of the marketplace is to go with a car insurance aggregator. An aggregator will be able to get quotes from insurance companies which the individual does not have access to and from the information you give them they will tailor their search to those lenders who meet your needs. If you were going to make a search yourself then you would have to repeat the information requested with all the lenders you asked for quotes. However by using an aggregator f

The Blews project was announced by Microsoft last week. While typical news-aggregation sites do a good job of clustering news stories according to topic, they leave the reader without information about which stories figure prominently in political discourse. BLEWS uses political blogs to categorize news stories according to their reception in the conservative and liberal blogospheres.

Surprisingly the Spanish online travel market is not saturated by the emergence of aggregation and comparison engines; there is still space for newcomer(s) to enter this segment of the online travel industry. That’s what Minube.com (that literally means “My Cloud” in Spanish) did today by launching this new flight/hotel aggregator “Minube”.
Minube.com referred itself as being a web 2.0 site. A simple, clean and original design with green, red and orange clouds! It uses features that made Web 2.0 sites so convenient such as the suggestion search box; as you type in a query it will display the available cities/countries/airports dynamically via some AJAX. Pretty useful when you don’t know how to spell those Spanish cities or when you don’t know the airport name of your destination.
Of course it also integrates maps from Google maps (I did not manage to see the mapping of all hotels of the first page of result on one map), and reviews (reviews ar

A Guide to RSS AggregatorsOne of the most popular features of Internet portals, websites, pages and even emails is a frame that features an organized list of news headlines and periodic updates from other web sources.Really Simple Syndication, formerly “Rich Site Summary” or simply, RSS makes this possible. Most users visit a lot of websites whose content continually change, such as news sites, community organization or professional association information pages, medical websites, product support pages, and blogs. As Internet surfing became an intrinsic part of business and leisure, it became important to get rid of the very tedious task of repeatedly returning to each website to see updated content.RSS easily distributes information from different websites to a wider number of Internet users. RSS aggregators are programs that use RSS to source these updates, and then organize those lists of headlines, content and notices for easy reading. It allows computers to automatically re
I find myself really wanting to build my own aggregator of RSS feeds. I use Google's custom home page for my rss needs, and for the most part it works pretty well. But I dont' want to add all the RSS feeds I like to it, just not enough room. What I really want is one box that I have display a merged version of 10 different feeds. These are my friends and such who only post once every few days. It would take less space and offer an easier interface for me. Am I alone?
I think there could be a real value in a web portal that you can send a list of feeds and it will create a custom merged feed from. It would have its own page but also be available as a feed for whatever needs. You can do this with Yahoo Pipes, but pipes has issues that prevent it from being as useful as it could be. A it isn't easy to find aggregations that already exist. B it is quite slow. C the interface is intimidating to all but techies. D I c

Slashdot.org writes about a Greek blogger who got sued and arrested, based on what someone else wrote. Blog aggregators reprint the “feed” from other blogs who are members of the list. Blogging Tories, ProgressiveBloggers.ca and the Saskblogs Aggregator are some popular aggregators in Canada. If ever one of their operators were sued or arrested, the blogosphere would take a serious hit. When bloggers are punished, freedom of speech suffers.

In sports censorship news, for some reason CKRM’s Rod Pedersen pulled a blog post he wrote concerning Gainer’s invitation to Calgary being revoked. I saw it before it displayed only the word -CENSORED-. If I get an update as to why it was pulled, I’ll post the clip I saw.
Jump2Mail is like a web-based Thunderbird - you can add multiple email addresses and it gets the emails from them. It has nice features, such as planning features, tasks, anti-spam filtering, contacts, bookmark management, and RSS aggregation. It looks much better than Horde - but is it really? It is taking a long time to get email from an IMAP server - it still says “Chargement en cours.” It looks promising with its nice Ajax interface, but is it really good enough and fast enough to switch to?
I keep hearing about RSS, XML and RSS feeds. I just barely have a clue what they are, but when people then start talking about RSS aggregators, what are they talking about and why would I want one? Do you use an aggregator, and if so, which one? Ain't jargon fun? RSS is Really Simple Syndication and it's a simple data-only version of a Web page or, in the case of a weblog, Web site. Why is that interesting? Because it's then easy to write programs that track this XML formatted data stream and let you know when there's new material added to the site. For example, if you were tracking the Ask Dave Taylor RSS data stream then when this article "went live" on my site, you'd receive notification and be able to read it within minutes of it arriving. Maybe not so critical for my tech and business Q&A, I admit, but I also track a number of different business newswires and was reading about the Proctor & Gamble acquisition of Gillette at least a day prior to my colleagues. How do I know tha
