      Afternoon Delight
The air was warm this weekend, reminding us of how hot the weather will turn in the matter of days as summer fast approaches. The ridiculous winds that have plagued us for weeks subsided enough for a jaunt in the pool. The water was cool and crisp, providing an invigorating shock upon entry. Zane practiced his swimming, kicking his legs and paddling his arms. He flew through the air like a rocket,

Ok, so I didn't actually spend my afternoon with Joanne Chang herself, but I decided this morning to wander over to the South End and check out her two restaurants.First, I swung by Meyers + Chang to have lunch. The restaurant struck me as a little bit like P.F. Chang's but more laid back and a little edgier. Meyers + Chang is an Asian fusion restaurant that seems to have elements of Chinese and

Afternoon Open Thread: Israelis' Diamond Day
This past Wednesday was Israeli Independence Day, the 60th, which makes it the diamond anniversary. Naturally, Palestinians saw little reason to celebrate, and they were not alone. Over 100 prominent British Jews issued a letter proclaiming "We're Not Celebrating Israel's Anniversary." From the letter: We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state founded on terrorism, massacres and the dispossession of another people from their land. We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state that even now engages in ethnic cleansing, that violates international law, that is inflicting a monstrous collective punishment on the civilian population of Gaza and that continues to deny to Palestinians their human rights and national aspirations. We will celebrate when Arab and Jew live as equals in a peaceful Mi

What Not To Do On A Lazy Saturday Afternoon
      1. Don't have a very heavy lunch of spaghetti and homemade meatballs and tuna2. Don't watch a DVD while having said lunch (I watched Monsoon Wedding)3. Don't lie down for a nap right after having the heavy lunch and watching the DVD.If you did all of the above, you might have weird dreams just like I did.I kept dreaming about traditional Indian weddings, which I attributed to the movie I'd watched earlier, and being kidnapped before being force fed feta cheese. I'm not sure where the latter dream came from because I have not thought of feta cheese in a while. The dreams were so vivid, so real that I had to force myself to wake up a few times, only to continue the dream when I went back to sleep. It was very disturbing, I tell you.Even with all the dreams that I had, it didn't stop me from p

But she loves to help us especially transferring seedlings to a bigger pot. Eventhough she was not obliged to do it, still she insist in helping us and while working she has lots of stories from watching on TV. Afternoon at the movies
All week the temperature hung well below zero and the snow flew fast and furious. After three days winter storm finally let up and the sun came out and shone brightly on the virgin white landscape. After being holed up in the house for three days I felt the need to escape the companionship of my two dogs and find some more human company. I let the dogs out to frolic in the snow while I showered & changed into some old clothes; jeans, t-shirt, and my old worn denim jacket. After putting the dogs into the basement, I grabbed my Tigers cap and pulled it over my curly black hair and walked out the door.Surprisingly most of the roads had been cleared of the snow and traffic was moving well as I drove to a dingy little porno theatre on the down side of the city, but they show gay films and have

Today at morning meeting we were given the good news that the instructor staff had the aftrnoon off. So after completing a morning of site work a few of us jumped in a car and headed to the kayaking shop on the banks of the Durance. Many hours were spent in here, with the owner Wolfgang, who's got to be one of the best managers out there in the retail sector of the international kayaking market. He would run franticallly around his shop trying to find you the best piece of kit he had to offer, which would match your needs the best. Then he would give you a bit of discount for being British, then a bit more for being a PGL worker and then tell you what it would cost you all in pounds. What a great bloke. What makes him an even better bloke is that after all that i didn't buy anything

Afternoon Open Thread: The Criminalization of America
Some staggering statistics: one in 100 American adults are in prison, one in every 9 black men between the ages of 20 and 34 is locked up, and, though the United States has less than 5% of the world's population, it provides 25% of its prisoners. In this area, the US is by far the world leader. It begs the question — why is America a nation of criminals? Naturally, people differ in their explanations. This comment thread on the topic offers some common examples; "higher crime rates are just part of our national character," "it's due to our strong, general ideas of individualism," and "violence seems to be worshiped in American society." Rather than scrutinize the government and its institutions that lock up our men and women, these individuals attribute our world-leading prison popul

FACT: I Made Money Today (afternoon update)
So I just wandered over to see how my blog was doing mid-day. I see I earned .24 today. I'll take it. I have no real way of seeing site statistics other then what AdSense can give me. I hear people talk about seeing what keywords or sites referred them to their site but I have no idea (yet) how to accomplish that. So I am learning what I can online and feeling my way around in the dark. I can't really say if this preliminary buildup is taking longer or shorter then I expected. I do know the more I learn the more I get sidetracked so to speak. For instance this whole making-money-with-social-networks thing like Yuwie and Zenzuu . I still am in the embryo stages. More to follow.....

Music in the afternoon - Ne-Yo's world preiere of 'Closer'
Oh hey damn what a find. I was cruising the Youtube and noticed that at the top where things being watched were, there was a particularly good looking man with a fedora. I decided to click it, and I struck gold baby dolls! It's a little funky dance music a la ballad from Ne-Yo called 'Closer' and it's sex-ay! I dig it and it made me do the head nodding dancing in my office chair thing. My co-workers must think I am nuts now. They are right too. Nuts for Ne-Yo!'Closer' for my planetfunkblog readers...uh yeaaaaah

Afternoon Open Thread: UN DR Congo Deals, China-manufactured Tibetan flags?
The BBC Panorama program came out yesterday with news that UN peacekeepers in the DR Congo provided arms to militia groups and smuggled gold and ivory. The 18-month investigation found that: Pakistani peacekeepers in the eastern town of Mongbwalu were involved in the illegal trade in gold with the FNI militia, providing them with weapons to guard the perimeter of the mines Indian peacekeepers operating around the town of Goma had direct dealings with the militia responsible for the Rwandan genocide, now living in eastern DR Congo. The Indians traded gold, bought drugs from the militias and flew a UN helicopter into the Virunga National Park, where they exchanged ammunition for ivory However, Alan Doss, Special Representative to the Secretary-General of the UN, defends the credibility of

Afternoon Open Thread: More of the Same from McCain
In 2000, McCain made campaign finance reform one of his primary issues. In 2008, he doesn't seem too interested. NYT: But over a seven-month period beginning last summer, Mr. McCain’s cash-short campaign gave itself an advantage by using a corporate jet owned by a company headed by his wife, Cindy McCain, according to public records. For five of those months, the plane was used almost exclusively for campaign-related purposes, those records show. Mr. McCain’s campaign paid a total of $241,149 for the use of that plane from last August through February, records show. That amount is approximately the cost of chartering a similar jet for a month or two, according to industry estimates. UPI has more: "This amounts to a subsidy for his campaign, which is notable given how badly they were

      Afternoon Thread: Internet Tax?
Via Drudge we learn that New York state will begin taxing many internet purchases in about five weeks: In the midst of a budget crisis, New York is now telling Amazon and certain other large Internet-only vendors they must collect state and local sales tax — if they allow sales via "click-throughs" from New York-based Web sites. The new rule is set to go into effect on June 1. The state estimates this new Internet tax will bring in $50 million this year and $75 million next year. The Retail Council Of New York State hopes the new rule is the first step toward collecting sales taxes on all Internet commerce. But the new rulings aren't sitting well with the Internet giants. Amazon, the largest Internet retailer, is objecting to the decision, saying "this is the wrong time to increase t

      Meshes of the Afternoon (1943)
Meshes of the Afternoon is full of bizarre and creepy surrealist images. It's very poetic and disturbing. It reproduces the way in which the subconscious of an individual will develop, interpret and elaborate an apparently simple and casual incident into a critical emotional experience.Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid wanted to put on film the feeling which a human being experiences about an incident, rather than to record the incident accurately. This short is still one of the most popular of all American experimental films and is a landmark film that has provided an important model, setting the tone and style for other individual efforts over the next decade. The entire film has seen through the eyes of a woman. You cannot ever tell when Maya's character is awake or dreaming. She carries a
