Here at the Seminal we teamed up with Veracifier.com to produce this video of Afghan students from the University of Kabul speaking about their thoughts on the current situation in Afghanistan. Filmed during my visit to Bucharest for the Young Atlanticists Summit the students were part of a group that had won a scholarship to come to Bucharest and meet with other young people from NATO countries. Amongst the many interesting things that were said by the students was the stress they placed on the need to negotiate with the Taliban who they saw as fellow citizens.

The future generation of Afghan women. Nushin Arbabzadah, an Afghan writer and journalist, addresses the persistence of fundamental Islam in Afghanistan despite being “liberated” by the United States almost seven years ago. Misogynist laws are being passed by Afghan lawmakers that will further deny women equal rights. And these same lawmakers present themselves differently to various groups. They show their willingness to the West to embrace democracy while to fundamentalists they display their Islamic credentials. While Arbabzadah doesn't address the issue specifically, the article is illustrative of the fact that democracy at gunpoint really doesn't solve the issues that come with the heavily ingrained cultural and religious aspects of the country. Article Title: Afghan Hound Dog Breed ExplainedAuthor: John E AdamsAfghan Hound. Royal heir to the throne! Afghan hounds, also known as Tazi in their homeland, is aparticularly beautiful breed of dog whose history dates backthousands of years. It is considered the national dog breed of Afghanistan and formany years, Afghan hounds were not permitted to leave thecountry. It is only within the last hundred years that Afghan houndshave come to the attention of American and Europe dog breeds. It wasn't until the 1930s that they were recognized by the AKCand CKC as a distinct breed. The Afghan hound is easily distinguished by it's long, sleekcoat, which may come in any color or pattern, and its feathery, curly tail. This points to its long history as a hunting dog in themountains of Afghanistan, where it was used to hunt down localpredators and pests like wolves and foxes as well as foodanimals like gazelle. Though these dogs are quite tall, they are also fairly lightand t

Great book if you have any interest in the behind the scenes of American & British Secret Services. The Afghan is Izmat Khan, who made his reputation fighting the Soviets. Then, during the Afghan civil war following the USSR's withdrawal, Khan became a Taliban commander battling against the Anglo-American supported Northern Alliance. After being captured and participating in the Qala-i-Jangi prison rebellion, Izmat was spirited off to the American detention center at Guantanamo Bay to be imprisoned there for four years. Meanwhile, the CIA and MI6 catch whiff of a new Al Qaeda plot code named "al-Isra", which, in Islamic tradition, was the Prophet Muhammad's journey
A major battle has been fought today in Afghanistan's Helmand Province, a mountainous region in the south that is sick with Taliban fighters and is often the scene of frequent fighting. O.K. kids, time to stop with the playful kidding around for a bit. I got this comment direct from Afghanistan and I am pleased to learn there are groups like this springing up.It's a comment on the piece I did last week on the Bedouin guy in Israel who had eight wives and 60 or 70 kids. (No one seems to know for sure!) Not everyone reads the comments section so I want to draw attention to this group here and urge you to support them in any way possible.Muslims Against Sharia said...Muslims Against Sharia condemn treatment of women by the State of Israel. Government-sanctioned polygamy is unbecoming of a country that claims to be the only true Democracy in the Middle East. We call on Israeli Knesset to immediately enact a law prohibiting married men to marry more women. No civilized society of the 21st century can permit this medieval practice. No civilized society treat its women as less than human beings. You see? It's not just the Arab States that condone Sharia Law. I replied!Thank

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Taliban militants hanged a teenager in southern Afghanistan because he had U.S. money in his pocket, and they stuffed five $1 bills in his mouth as a warning to others not to use dollars, police said Monday. Taliban militants elsewhere killed eight police.
The 15-year-old boy was hanged from a tree on Sunday in Helmand, the most violent province in the country and the world’s No. 1 poppy-growing region.
“The Taliban warned villagers that they would face the same punishment if they were caught with dollars,” said Wali Mohammad, the district police chief in Sangin.
Dollars are commonly used in Afghanistan alongside the afghani, the local currency, although the U.S. currency is more commonly seen in larger cities where international organizations are found.

Hundreds of Afghan protestors marched through the streets of Khandar shouting ‘Death to Canada” and “Death to Foreigners” after a series of Coalition raids led to the death of an important religious leader and his brother. Their bodies still lay in the open as demonstrators proclaimed their anger at what they believed to be a botched raid that was probably the result of incorrect information provided by an informer. A Canadian reporter was told, The day is not far off when these innocent civilians will stand against NATO and other foreign troops.”
During the past several months hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent civilians have either been killed by the Taliban or by coalition forces. The use of bombing raids invariably results in killing innocent bystanders since Taliban forces hide among villagers. We are living in the aftermath of America’s failure to follow through on its successful invasion of Afghanistan by using a large army to decisively
US General Dan McNeill, on a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels, said he had made suggestions about what else the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) could do to NATO's top military and civilian commanders. But he insisted that ISAF, whose aim is to provide security so that Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government can spread its influence throughout the insurgency hit country, should not start destroying poppy fields.NATO officials acknowledge privately that the sight of soldiers ripping up opium crops would probably undermine their efforts to win the confidence of ordinary Afghans and turn them away from their former Taliban rulers."The fundamental principle is that the Afghans must take the lead for very obvious political reasons," added NATO spokesman James Appathurai.Afghanistan produces about 93 percent of the world's production illegal opium, the raw ingredient for heroin. The crop jumped by a third this year, helped by good rainy weather, despite international

The Afghan government and Nato have said publicly that figures for civilian casualties after military action are often exaggerated or fabricated.Lt-Col Maria Carl gave a press conference alongside the Afghan defence ministry spokesman, Gen Zahir Azimi. Lt-Col Carl said accounts of civilian casualties after military engagements often turned out to be inflated or completely fabricated. She gave recent examples, including village elders' accounts of more than 100 civilian deaths in western Afghanistan a few days ago. Lt-Col Carl said it was now clear that no civilians had died there, saying that in fact foreign and Afghan forces had moved villagers to safety. Gen Azimi from the defence ministry said the Taleban regularly forced villagers to phone media outlets with inflated figures, threatening to behead them if they did not do so. More...

Two people who'd been held hostage by Taliban and al Qaeda militants were rescued today by U.S. and Afghan forces during raids in the Zaghun Shah district of Afghanistan's Paktika province, U.S. officials reported. Intelligence indicated that three Afghan citizens from the district had recently been abducted by Taliban and al Qaeda fighters. During raids conducted today, U.S. and Afghan troops discovered one of the hostages being held at a compound, while another hostage held nearby was being led away by his captors to another location. The anti-insurgent forces chased down and captured the terrorists and freed one of the hostages. Another hostage was being held in a nearby compound. Coalition forces found and released him, too, but they met with armed resistance when attempting to get the militants to surrender. The British serviceman was among seven people to die when the Chinook aircraft came down in Afghanistan's volatile Helmand province. "It was a hostile area, where the helicopter went down," said Major John Thomas, a spokesman for Nato's International Security Assistance Force. "Initial indications are that enemy fire may have brought down the helicopter." Other troops going to the scene were ambushed and had to call in air support to drive off their attackers. Pakistan claimed it killed five Afghan soldiers, but Afghanistan said just two Afghan civilians were killed. Tension has been running high between Afghanistan and Pakistan, both key U.S. allies, over controlling their 1,510-mile shared border and stemming the flow of Taliban and al-Qaida militants that stage cross-border attacks inside Afghanistan. Coalition and Afghan National Army operations have blunted the Taliban spring offensive in eastern Afghanistan, Army Brig. Gen. Joseph Votel said at a Pentagon news conference today.Votel, the deputy commanding general for operations for Combined Joint Task Force 82, spoke to reporters via a video hook-up. Votel said coalition operations seem to have countered the long-anticipated Taliban spring offensive. "We have been more offensive than I think they have in our posturing and in our ability to dominate areas on the battlefield," Votel said. "As a result of that, I think we've seen a decrease in activities along the border. And our ability to be in more places, along with our Afghan national security force partners, has enabled us to address a broader area across Regional Command East." Premier Gordon Campbell after the speech, the two-term Democratic president urged the deployment of more troops."We have under-forced the mission there," he said. "We have 20,000 American troops there, 20,000 NATO troops there, and there are 140,000 troops in Iraq."He is urging the U.S. government to f
