That oft-quoted phrase "you have never had it so good" could certainly be used to describe today's notebook market, with even some sub-£400 laptops having the same feature set as last year's £1,000 machines. And the trend is set to continue as technology prices fall. One of the latest to join the throng at the value end is from Advent, with the 7113, which remarkably includes Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium in its £400 price tag. Helping to keep the price in check is the choice of processor. Intel's Celeron M 430 isn't going to win any awards in the performance stakes, being clocked at just 1.73GHz, but it gets the job done and at the end of the day that's all that matters to many people. It is helped along by 1GB of DDR2 memory which is the minimum amount to get Vista up and runn

As technology gets more advanced, more and more applications can be easily done. The computer age has come and its development is very rapid. New technologies and updates are done every once in a while. Various computer programs are made even better to satisfy the needs of the user. And thus, opensource development is inevitable. What is opensource software and what are the common opensource technologies these days? Well, open source software or OSS is computer software that has a special license which allows anyone to have access on the program code. This also means that everyone can have the privilege to edit the code or modify it based on his needs. On our last day of our TV Advent calendar it seemed appropriate to share two of my favorite holiday-themed vanity cards. I’m sure you won’t be surprised to see Mutant Enemies’ Grrr Argh and who can resist the cuteness of the Warner Brothers (and sister!).
Happy Holidays!! We hope you enjoyed our TV Advent Calendar.
My husband put this together. If you have an advent wreath (or just 5 candles), this is a sweet way to remember the true meaning of Christmas. It's all taken from the Bible, with nothing added. His whole side of the family does an advent reading every year before we allow the little ones to tear into their gifts. With the lights turned off, and only the glow of the candles, it gives me chills to

The fourth candle is being lit today. I've asked Karen from Needs New Batteries to complete my Advent Sunday series with her reflections. Thanks Karen! And stay tuned for part two of this series in the coming days. Right about now it is easy to feel the closeness of Christmas. Right about now, it feels like we've started; it's here. There is no time left to shop - no good time anyway. No time left to savor. If you have not baked, shopped or wrapped yet, you have no time left to pause and wonder. As I look ahead into the hours between tonight and Tuesday morning, I could make a reasonable guess as to how each of them will be occupied. I can fill those minutes, those hours, for the most part as I choose. Just now, I'm wanting to slow down can choose wisely. I must admit to neglecting my Islamic studies a bit during this season in order to reflect on Advent and the Christian Gospels. As I had hoped would happen when I began this journey, the new things I am learning about various faiths and religions and cultures not only change my perspectives on themselves but also open my eyes to see myself, my own faith, religion, and culture through a fresh lens.During this time when Christians are celebrating the birth of a man they believe to be God incarnate, I can see a bit how this looks from the outside. Most people around the world share the same essential ethical systems and most religions and faiths believe there is one God known as Love, Mercy, and Compassion. But when we claim that this same God became incarnate among us, once and only once - we move to a unique identity. And in this place it interests me to see where Christians and Muslims shed different light on the topic. Muslims believe that Jesus the Christ was a prophet from God, as Ch
It was revealed in recent holiday sound off (coming soon, as in tomorrow), that several of our contributors have never seen A Christmas Story. How’s that even possible?! Even though the spirit of Advent is one of solemnity and preparation, the third candle signifies joy, rejoicing. And here's why. Think of the moment in life when you were at your very worst. Think of the day that was the most stressful, the most horrible, the most full of conflict or dread or darkness. I was reminded today that the incarnation means that God is with us in every sense of the phrase. We don't need to put our fanciest clothes on, our best foot forward, and our happiest mask on. We don't need to be on our best behavior. He came to real life and he came with a blessing, not a curse. He came and experienced all the ups and downs; we cannot shock him; we need not feel shame in his presence. Can you imagine this, really? This is mind blowing, life changing stuff. The third candle is burning. We wait...and rejoice. As always, I use words like "God" and "he/him/his" because I am writing within a language and culture - but always realizing that both language and culture ar
It’s been a long day of fighting the mall crowds to do some Christmas shopping followed up by a couple hours of wrapping (tomorrow comes the mailing).
It seems like the perfect day for this simple holiday greeting that CBS aired back in the early 70s:

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. 3 You have multiplied the nation and increased its joy; They rejoice before You according to the joy of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For You have broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. 5 For every warrior¿s sandal from the noisy battle, and garments rolled in blood, will be used for burning and fuel of fire. 6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will p

1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, "Indeed we are your bone and your flesh. 2 Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the LORD said to you, 'You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.'" 3 Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.Tags: Jesse Tree Ornaments, 2 Samuel 5: 1-5, shepherd, King David

1 Now the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons." 2 And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." But the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you." 4 So Samuel did what the LORD said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, "Do you come peaceably?" 5 And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, "
It’s funny how classic holiday movies are holiday “TV” for me. I own several Christmas movies on DVD but that’s never the same as watching their broadcasts during the weeks leading up to Christmas. All of that to explain why I couldn’t leave It’s A Wonderful Life out of this calendar.

I warned you that I am a bit obsessive. It’s part of my cheerful, optimistic, ‘more is better,’ out look on life. If one day a week of blogging is good, then daily must be even better. Why have one cup of coffee when you can enjoy a whole pot? If having two Advent calendars is special, then more would add to our Christmas joy.
You can see how we ended up with five children.
I’m not very good with limits or boundaries, especially on things that are fun. I am more of a ‘have your cake and eat it too’ kind of girl. Mind you, I’ve never really understood that expression. What would you do with the cake except for eat it? How does “having it” differ from “eating it?” Help me out bloggy friends.
But I digress…
Back to Advent - I ran out of time last night to share what types of things we include in the kids’ calendars. And you thought the post was long enough as it was - ha!

I love Christmas! The nativity displays, Christmas lights, Christmas carols, Christmas movies and the whole holiday season! Every year I tell myself I’m going to savor the time before Christmas, that I won’t let the days fly by in a super-sonic-seasonal rush, that we’ll spend afternoons reading Christmas books and baking cookies amidst the smells of our fresh cut tree and left over Christmas wreath cuttings.
As soon as that happens, I’ll be sure to let you know.
I’ll blog it - complete with pictures. And soft Christmas carol playing in the background.
Until then I’ll just share one of our favorite Christmas traditions.

Opening Prayer:Let us pray as Advent draws to a close, that Christ will truly come into our hearts.Lord, fill our hearts with your love, and as you revealed to us by an angel the coming of your Son as man, so lead us through his suffering and death to the glory of his resurrection, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Amen.Closing Prayer:Oh, God who loves me with such tenderness, I beg you for moments of quiet in this day and in the days ahead.I long to savor this joy, this anticipation of the great gift you give us.I ask for the peace and joy of "watchful hope."Give me the grace to carry in my heart the soul-lifting awareness of Emmanuel - God With Us.What joy, what a gift. The Advent song comes to me and fills my heart:" Emmanuel , Emmanuel.Who are we that you should love us so well?"I want to walk in gratitude in these last days of Advent and place myself in the service of your plan for me.Rejoice! I love the holidays and I especially love the excuse to get dressed up. Whether it’s wearing a nice dress to the office holiday party or donning a santa hat for a fun holiday luncheon, I’m all about wearing something a little special.
Why should it be any different online? Just Jody know this about me [...]
Here are a couple of pictures of our Advent Wreath. This is the second year we have used this particular wreath and liturgy for Advent. It may be difficult to see but surrounding the wreath are symbols that coincide with the Scripture passage to be read on that day. Our wreath is The Jesse Tree Family Advent Wreath. The Jesse Tree is the family tree of Jesus. This Advent Wreath tells the story of His lineage through the symbols and readings from Scripture.BLESSING: May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ's promise to bring us salvation.SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 9: 1-2 "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwell in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing."
Opening Prayer:All-powerful Father, guide us with your love as we await the coming of your Son.Keep us faithful that we may be helped through life and brought to salvation. We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Closing Prayer:Jesus, you shine a light into the darkness of my life.I am like a plant in limited sun, and I find my being turning toward you longing to be closer, wanting only to draw near.Help me to be faithful in the big decisions of my life and in the smallest of ways I live out each day.My goal is salvation, Lord, and I am painfully aware I can't do that myself.Teach me to be patient, to be faithful.I know there is so much more grace I need and so much more you want to give me.Help me to be open to it and to recognize the many gifts you give me each day.May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.Amen.
The official blog for Osprey Publishing, a publisher of military history books, has started creating a series of posts in advent calendar style to showcase artwork from their books.
As with conventional advent calendars, each day’s post from Dec 1 to Dec 24 will contain a door graphic which you can click to reveal an artwork illustrated by one of Osprey’s many talented artists. While there isn’t much in common between military historical art and the spirit of love, care and sharing associated with Christmas, I’m always glad to collect any high quality military art that comes my way. By the way, each post also helpfully lists the book that the artwork was commissioned for those interested to collect the actual printed artwork (which is the ideal choice of course, except that Osprey books are not exactly cheap here. The shipping charges from their online store don’t help either (unless they offer free shipping to Asia ).

Not strictly an invention this one, just a reapplication of an invention. It's from Sam.
Hi Steve,
Here's one for you advent. You know those massive toilet rolls they have in restaurants these days? Well, why can't we buy them for home?
They were brought in so that the restaurant owners didn't have to be changing the rolls all the time. Well, do we at home just love doing the change? No. We'd prefer the option where we don't have to as much changing.
There you go. Just an idea.
Cheers...

And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother¿s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. 7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this la

The post title may be slightly misleading, as most of you know I don’t take the title agnostic, but I think the idea is helpful and humbling especially coming out of a tradition that put absolute knowledge on a pedestal. I like the encampment of ‘hopeful skeptics that tries to follow the teachings of Jesus’ - just for clarification.
Moving on - everyone seems to be blogging about the Advent Season starting so I thought I would weigh in. Here is my central question: With as many atheist and agnostics as there are in the world and with the growing number of scholars who concede that the Birth Narratives are later inventions (not being in the earliest Jesus stories), what can we learn from the stories at this time of the year if we don’t think they happened?
Reframing the question: What can we learn from the birth narrative, if we don’t take it as literally happening as told?
Any takers?
I wrote over at my crafty blog about making a special advent calendar. It’s a fun way to mark down the days until the big holiday for kids, and helps young ones understand time, counting, and hopefully a little patience.
We are doing very little decorations this year, hopefully to prevent anything breaking due to hyperactive cats and wild little boys. But I wanted to do something fun and decorate a little. As I was thinking aobut it last night I came up with an idea. Make a batch of salt dough and create handmade ornaments. They are inexpensive to make so if they get broken it’s not a big deal, unlike my special handblown glass ornaments. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin and cut several ornaments out with cookie cutters. Then bake, paint, and apply a clear varnish to protect them. Or you can leave them unpainted and plain so that you can crumble them later and toss them outside for birds or other animals to eat. They are just flour, salt, and water so you do not hav
6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.---------------------------------------7:17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds a
Opening Prayer:Father, may the coming celebration of the birth of your son bring us your saving help and prepare us for eternal life.Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Closing Prayer:Dearest Lord, Your invitation settles in my soul:'Turn to me and be safe.'Something lets go inside when I take those words into my heart. They are an invitation for me to rest.So many moments of my life are filled with my own needs.'Turn to me and be safe,' you say to me again.Give me the great grace to let go from the depths of my soul.Help me to be released from the demons I cling to with so much fear.I hear your invitation to ask for help and I begin to list all the places in my life that need healing.'Turn to me and be safe.'You promise your saving help and I know it is the only thing that can heal me.I feel your presence in my life and am aware of the growing joy I feel as I anticipate celebrating the b
My wife is German. As in, from Germany, and my wife is an Advent calendar practitioner. Did you know Germans where the inventors of the Advent Calendar. Back in the 19th century the German Lutherans would just put a chalk mark on the door beginning December 1st.
Fast forward to today December 2007. Because we have twins, we have TWO Advent calendars. Because it is 2007 and not 1800 and whatever each calendar day has a nice little chocolate candy inside. (No chalk on the door for my kids)
Fast forward to this morning. Day 4 of the Advent and my girls now feel the need to wake up at 5:30 am so they can rush downstairs and open the Advent calendar to get the chocolate candy. Now mind you, they could give a shit about the meaning of the Advent. They are 2 1/2. But tell them they can eat chocolate every morning and, well, let’s just say my girls are now Advent addicts.
If they had their way, it would be Christmas tomorrow so they could open ALL of the days NOW!

Opening Prayer:Father of love, you made a new creation through Jesus Christ your son.May his coming free us from sin and renew his life within us, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever.Closing Prayer:Lord of such compassionate wisdom, How often do I exalt myself and ignore you?I look over the heads of my more humble brothers and sisters, not seeing how they rely on you so much more than I do.Help me to learn from them to make you the center of my life. You invite me to not be ashamed of what I have done in my life, but instead offer me a refuge.Let me call out to you; hear me:Give me the grace to see those around me who are brokenhearted.Guide me in staying with them in their sorrows.I ask for the courage to help them in all the ways they need it and to be your servant on this earth.May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.Amen.
I updated the Advent resources to include a list of links to videos on Advent. Yesterday I added the audio, so now I'm appealing to all of your senses :D Advent should be a time of reflection and prayerful preparation for the Coming of the Lord. I hope these links aid in that endeavor. I will be updating the list continuously throughout these weeks leading up to Christmas.Pax Christi, phatcatholic

Aha, ich ahne was.

Advent season is finally here. I now give you permission to play Christmas music, drink cocoa, and decorate your grocery store for the holidays. Oh, I see you already started those things. In October. Good job.Anyway, while you're all celebrating the beginning of our anticipation of the arrival of Christ, I'm snowed in at a motel where I have been staying while in the field. Not only am I stuck here for probably another six days, but I forgot to bring my Cabin Fever Prevention Kit, which, in case you're wondering, consists of a Bible, a rosary, and a whole lot of comic books. If only Jack had those things, The Shining would never have happened. And if only I had those things....Actually, that situation could never happen in my case anyway. Jack sold his soul for a drink, but I'm in a motel with a bunch of archaeologists, so I can easily get a drink through less drastic measures. However, if you're in the market for a soul and happen to have a Bible, a rosary, and a sizable
One of the many reason why I love Anglican (and other liturgical) worship is that it incorporates waiting into our spiritual journey, and into ourselves. I've talked about the beauty and significance of the season of Lent, and Advent is another profound season of waiting. If you live in America, you'll notice that before Thanksgiving dinner has been properly cleared from the table most retailers have already declared the Christmas Holiday to be upon us. But liturgical churches disagree. The first Sunday of December does ring in a holiday season, but not Christmas. Not yet. Today, we begin Advent, a season of waiting, of anticipation, or preparation. We are waiting for Christ, for Emmanuel, for God-With-Us. Today we will gather together around a wreath of four candles, lighting only one. The journey towards Emmanuel has begun. As I typed the phrase "God-with-us" in the paragraph above, I found that I couldn't decide which word to write in italics; each one has such startling s

Advent is the beginning of the Church Year for most churches in the Western tradition. This year the season begins on Dec 2, the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, and ends on Christmas Eve (Dec 24). Advent is a time of expectation, symbolized by the four-week period of preparation leading up to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. An Advent Candle is lit on each Sunday of the season. The flame of each new candle reminds us, the worshipers, that something is happening, and something more is still to come. When the candles from the previous weeks are relit, it's symbolic of the arrival of Christ bringing light into darkness. The Advent Wreath has five candles. The candles are arranged in a circle to remind us of the continuous power of God, which knows neither beginning nor ending. There is also symbolism in the color of the candles; representing either people or themes of the Christmas story.Three purple (sometimes blue) candles symbolize the coming of Christ from th
Opening Prayer:Let us pray that God will fill us with joy at the coming of Christ.Lord God, may we, your people, who look forward to the birthday of Christ experience the joy of salvation and celebrate that feast with love and thanksgiving. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Closing Prayer:I lift my heart up to you, Lord, to thank you for the blessings you shower on me each day.You are the joy of my soul.I know that in your great love, I am held and protected by you.I pray and listen to the good news you send; I ask and feel the healing.I am freed by you from the things in this world that let me hide from you.I rejoice, I rejoice, down to my soul.Help me to prepare my heart to be open and able to receive your immense love.May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.Amen.

I didn't get to scan our ornaments last night so I wanted to be sure I did that this morning. Our daughter colored the ornaments, and then after we cut them out, we rubbed the edges with a bronze inkpad to give them an aged look. You can decorate them anyway you want! Here are our first three days as an example.. we will begin our Advent readings this Sunday, the 2nd of December. At church we always have an Advent Wreath with candles lit each Sunday leading up to the Sunday before Christmas and we light the middle candle at our Christmas eve candlelight service. We will probably also have a wreath at home and light that at the beginning of our readings and then hang the ornament and blow out the candle after the reading. What special things do you do leading up to Christmas day?Tags: Jesse Tree Ornaments, Advent, December 2nd

VIENNA - The official lighting of lanterns from Pampanga province in the Philippines took place on November 19, 2007 in front of Vienna's City Hall. The San Fernando City government, through the initiative of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, donated 60 San Fernando lanterns to the Philippine Embassy in Vienna. The lanterns decorate one of 11 trees in the Rathausplatz in the Christkindlmarkt grounds, one of the biggest and most popular Christmas markets in Europe. Hundreds of stalls on the vicinity of the city hall were being installed. The stalls offer European and exotic foods, drinks and a lot of Christmas souvenirs. Indeed, it was a "tiangge"-like atmosphere. The Vienna Christkindlmarkt runs for six weeks from the third weekend of November to Christmas Day. It attracts an estimated three million tourists from Austria and neighboring countries. The simultaneous lighting of the Philippine lanterns was officiated by Ambassador Linglingay Lacanlale and Dr. Elisabeth Vitouch from the Vienna city

Outrage has erupted over the city of Hanover including an image of serial killer Fritz Haarmann in a children’s advent calendar. Haarmann was convicted of killing 24 young men, dissecting their bodies and disposing of them in the Leine river in 1925.
Taken out of context, this seems like it may be an artist’s in-joke that was discovered or some sort of publicity stunt. It is neither. The calendar features famous figures from Hanover’s history. The 80’s metal band “The Scorpions” are also featured (where is the outrage with them?).
It probably wasn’t the smartest move, but the city does use Haarmann and his crimes for publicity in other ways.
Regardless, the calendar is selling like crazy (controversy does that, you know) and all of the proceeds are going to a children’s cancer charity.
