The premium-badged 2008 Acura RDX, combining sport sedan-like power and handling with the cargo versatility, high seating position and all-wheel-drive capability of an SUV, boasts a full arsenal of appeal. Upon its introduction for the 2007 model year the RDX's only true competitor was the BMW X3, a vehicle that essentially had the compact premium SUV segment all to itself since its introduction for the 2004 model year. With new and upcoming entries from Audi, Infiniti, Mercedes and others, buyers will benefit from even more options.
Since its introduction in 2001 the Acura MDX has received acclaim for its comfortable ride, respectable off-pavement capability and manageable size, while the criticism revolved around its generic styling. The RSX is somewhat familiar as a redesigned Integra. The current version has either a 160 or a 200 hp four-cylinder power plant, with the latter coming standard in the Type S. The more powerful engine makes its horses partly through an advanced valve timing technology, which shifts into high performance mode at 6,000 rpm. The result is a kick in the pants similar to that of a turbocharger suddenly spooling up.
Acura RSX
The good news is that the RSX has superb handling and strong acceleration, especially if you are already running the engine fast, but it is easier to shift and to manage than many other sports cars. The bad news is that the engine is loud and raucous, not unlike the early Neon engines, and that makes you want to avoid going up to the speeds where the RSX really does its stuff. In everyday traffic, sprints that run up to 6,000 rpm are also relatively rare.

We’ve been a little disappointed with the Acura cars we’ve seen lately, so the 2008 Acura TL Type-S surprised us with its fun performance. Last year’s Acura RL in particular was a letdown, as its electronics were old and its performance wasn’t particularly fun or economical. But the 2008 Acura TL Type-S proved to be a car we wanted to drive. And although its electronics are dated, its audio system is one of the best around.
A good part of what made this TL fun was that Type-S trim, signifying the sport-tuned version of the car. The Type-S gets a slightly bigger V-6 engine than the base model, and a limited slip differential. But it’s still a front-wheel-drive car, making handling a bit weird, and the optional five-speed automatic transmission kills the car’s performance. Fortunately, our test car came with Honda’s six-speed close ratio manual, a transmission we’ve enjoyed on many other Honda cars such as the S2000 and the Civic Si.

All-wheel-drive systems are becoming an increasingly popular feature for large sedans. They allow for more exciting driving dynamics than pure front-wheel-drive, but also provide for increased fair weather traction over pure rear-wheel-drive. Acura revealed their all-wheel drive system dubbed Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) in the 2005 RL. Since then, the system has been adapted to the MDX and RDX vehicles as well. It is a system with a name only a Japanese company could get away with, after all there is a Honda powered Formula 1 team named Super Best Friends. Acura is proud of their technological development. Their 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show booth featured a SH-AWD display front and center. We used the opportunity to snap some pictures of the complex unit in order to illustrate its unique features. Honda Motor Co. (TSE:7267) plans to market its Acura line of luxury cars in Russia as early as 2008, targeting the rising wealthy class in big cities by bolstering its sales networks, company sources said Saturday.
The Japanese carmaker aims to sell 100,000 vehicles annually in Russia by 2010, including other Honda brands, up a factor of 6 from 2006.
Russia is one of the fastest growing markets in the world after China and India, and Honda and other top automakers around the globe are vying to expand sales there.
Honda aims to set up 10 dealerships in the country, putting one or two each in major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. Its local subsidiary will import and sell Acura models, including the RL luxury sedan - known as the Legend in Japan - the MDX sport utility vehicle and the TL midsize model.
Honda sells the Acura line in North America, China and Mexico, but not yet in Japan. It has decided to push back the planned debut here in 2008 by two years due to sluggish sale
Diesel power is the hot ticket at Le Mans right now after the dominant win by Audi's R10 this year and Peugeot coming next year. But technology always moves on in racing (unless you're talking Nascar, but that's a whole other story). Over the years Acura has made 13 models of cars with many different types of wheels, including the CL, EL, Integra, Legend, MDX, NSX, RL, RSX, RDX, SLX, TL, TSX and the Vigor. Acura has phased out all models except the MDX, RL, RSX, RDX, TL and the TSX, leaving us these 6 models in the great line up of automobiles to choose from. The older phased out models like the Integra and Vigor came from the factory stock with steel wheels and wheel covers along with an added extra for the OEM Factory Aluminum Alloy Acura Rims. Some Acura vehicles have factory original wheels that are a chrome finish instead of the natural aluminum alloy finish. For the most part these rims were sent out at some point along the way to be chrome dipped and an after market center cap was placed over the hub area to match the new chrome finish. The Jetta has been a fine car, but Alex and I recently decided to go the more economical route and replace it with an Acura EL. We found a silver 2002 Premium EL with low kms, in flawless condition.
Some might say it’s just a fancy Honda Civic, but it’s much more. The EL is a Honda 4 door sedan with an Acura quality interior. It’s seriously nice inside! Some of the features include: auto climate control, keyless entry, moonroof, leather seats, and heat absorbing tinted glass. Oh yeah, and the EL is only available in Canada. Our Escalade worshipping neighbours to the South don’t go for such efficient cars, so Acura never sold the EL in the US.

Acura had an ace up its sleeve at the North American International Auto Show. To the delight of onlookers, the company unveiled the Advanced Sports Car Concept (ASCC), which for all intents and purposes will serve as the foundation for the successor to the NSX. But unlike the heralded mid-engine sports car, the ASCC will have its engine located in front of the cabin. But that's not to say that the future exotic won't carry the spirit of the NSX. If you look closely, you'll notice subtle cues that have carried over from its predecessor, including the long one-piece taillight and all-black canopy. Autocar reports that Acura has redesigned its new front-engined NSX, which will lead the luxury brand's charge in Europe come 2010. The NSX was supposed to debut at last year's Tokyo Auto Show, but bosses were unimpressed with the final design and have pushed the release back a year.
