Activism can (and should) take many forms. To some it means an in-person demonstration and a myriad of clever signs. To others it means signing a petition. To me it means both of these and an infinite combination of opportunities via things just being invented. In some ways this all comes back to my broken-record "onramp" philosophy. An onramp is a way to bring someone into a movement. It may be a t

In a disturbing development by the Russian government, opposition activist Artem Basyrov was detained by two plainclothes officers and sentenced to be held in a psychiatric hospital in the central region of Mari El. The November 23 arrest is the latest in a series of psychiatric committals directed against political figures and journalists critical of the current regime. The psychiatric board that reviewed the 20-year old Basyrov's case alleged that he had "harassed" a woman and was suffering from "some sort of mental illness". Basyrov's supporters dismiss the allegations as "idiocy" and maintain that his arrest was designed to punish him for running as an Other Russia candidate in the local legislature. Basyrov was one of the organizers for a "Dissenter's meeting" that was scheduled to take place on November 24th. The other organizer, Mikhail Klyuzhev, was arrested on November 22 for "hooliganism" and held for three days. While his Basyrov's is scheduled for review in a few weeks,

On Thursday Novemeber 29, 2007, CNN released statements defending it's use of Democratic activist in the GOP debate it hosted on November 28, 2007."The whole point of these ground-breaking CNN/YouTube debates is to focus on substantive questions of concern to real people and to throw open the process to a wider range of Americans all around the country. CNN cared about what you asked, not who you were. This was the case for both the Democratic and the Republican CNN/YouTube debates. The issues raised during last night's debate were legitimate and relevant no matter who was asking the questions. The vested interests who are challenging the credibility of the questioners are trying to distract voters from the substantive issues they care most about. Americans are tired of that discredited low-road approach, and throughout this election campaign CNN will stay focused on what thecandidates are saying about the pressing issues facing this country at a critical time in our history."GOP Pres
There is a thin line between showing gore and graphic violence and displaying sentiments of anti-torture. Probably, it is a thin line which Youtube hasn't been able to comprehend. According to this article from Reuters, Youtube banned the account of prominent Egyptian anti-torture activist Wael Abbas. Abbas had uploaded close to 100 images to the Google owned Video publishing website, depicting police brutality and anti-government demonstrations. Abbas told to Reuter's on a phone interview ,They closed it (the account) and they sent me an e-mail saying that it will be suspended because there were lots of complaints about the content, especially the content of tortureRights activists however think that by Youtube suspending this account have actually done more wrong than right. Abbas' account was a very important platform of information on Human rights violation and abuses.

BEIJING: Chinese police have jailed a man for 14 days after he posted messages to chat rooms calling for a gathering of people angry over high real estate prices, state media and a rights group said Friday. The move appeared to be part of efforts to ratchet up already tight media and Internet controls ahead of a sensitive political congress expected in October. The Communist Party congress, held every five years, will set the agenda for the party and country for the next half-decade, and will likely include a reshuffling of some top leaders. It will also mark a renewal of party leader Hu Jintao's five-year tenure.

The 38-year- old victim had made many enemies during the rule of dictator Suharto and after his 1998 downfall. In a plot worthy of a spy thriller, an off-duty pilot from the state-run airline Garuda Indonesia, who is accused of links to the intelligence agency known by the acronym BIN, was convicted of slipping a lethal dose of arsenic into Munir's food or drink during his flight. But in a move sparking international outrage, the Supreme Court last year overturned the verdict on Pollycarpus Priyanto, citing insufficient evidence. A charge that the pilot used a falsified documen

Paris Hilton used her weekend on a little arts-and-crafts to try to bring a little bit of cheer to her dad's Father's Day by making him a card. Nice gesture by Paris who has claimed that when she is finally let out of Lynwood, she would like to skip the dumb blonde act and better society. Fair enough - I mean why not? Now she will get the opportunity. Representatives from the Los Angeles Civil Rights Association and Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable tried to hand deliver a letter to Hilton requesting she speak out on the jail system and its treatment of inmates in need of medical and psychological care. That's a pretty good start, Paris reportedly freaked during her first few hours in jail, and maybe she could help. "This will be a time for Paris to step up, and step her game up, and do what's right and represent people who need help in the mental illness area," said Eddie Jones, of the L.A. Civil Rights Association. "We've seen celebrities now who have made

We can easily be categorized as environmental freaks of the world but to be considered and environmental activist takes more than that. Sure there will always be the green awareness programs we believe in, but taking it a whole lot seriously takes more commitment than a pure one night undertaking.
Like any commitment to environmental safety awareness, environmental activists dedicate their lives to preaching and living the green way. Many have wanted to follow the footsteps of such environmentalists but to do so means having to generalize and not be on specifics only. Check out what environmental activist Mr. Ed Begley Jr. has to share with regards to his profession and what it takes to be one like him.

Mark my words; Paris Hilton will not change for the better when she gets out of prison, but not in the way you are thinking. Like Lindsay Lohan, or the other bumbling Hollywood idiots, it will not be long before she comes out and starts lecturing us what we should do to save the Planet. You think I am kidding, right? Well, allow me to paint you an ugly picture.Paris Hilton is going to get out of jail and say she is sick and tired of being an idiot. Well, at least that’s what her publicist will say for her. Her next move will be to network with the adult Hollywood elites, such as Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, and Leonardo DiCaprio. It will not be long after that when she starts to organize rallies for PETA, GREEN PEACE, and tells us to cut our carbon. This seems to be standard protocol after you act like a total psychopath for a whole decade.Just take a look at Angelina Jolie for example. Examine why people should revere what she does. The woman used to wear her husbands blood in a vil

A new investigation into the death of Indonesia's most prominent human rights activist indicates he was poisoned at Singapore's airport before boarding a plane to the Netherlands, a top detective said Friday. Munir Said bin Thalib, who exposed abuses by the Indonesian army during Suharto's dictatorship, began feeling ill about 40 minutes into the Sept. 7, 2004 Garuda Indonesia flight and his condition quickly deteriorated.Prosecutors earlier claimed the 38-year-old was poisoned on a Jakarta-Singapore flight, the first leg of his journey, but chief detective Bambang Hendarso Danuri said Friday new evidence indicated it happened later. "We are now sure Munir was poisoned (while transiting) at Changi airport," he said, noting that forensic experts in Seattle, Washington said the arsenic in his body "was the S-3 type, which reacts 30 to 60 minutes after intake."
Two former senior intelligence officers alleged to be connected with the death of human rights activist Munir Said Thalib have expressed their support for the investigation into the activist's murder, but only if the investigation heeds to professional and justice norms. Former chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) A.M. Hendropriyono and former deputy to the BIN chief Muchdi P.R. agreed that the police investigation had to proceed until all those involved in the case were brought to justice."The police must go on with their investigation into the case to avoid any war of opinion and unprecedented suspicion. They must carry out the inquiry professionally to prevent them from going beyond the truth," Hendropriyono said after attending the 55th anniversary celebration of the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus) in Jakarta on Monday.
The former head of Indonesia's national airline was detained for questioning Saturday, in an effort to solve the long-running case of a prominent activist who died of poisoning on a 2004 flight to the Netherlands, a police spokesman said. Former Garuda President Indra Setiawan and Rohainil Aini, a flight operations officer, were taken to the national police headquarters after being named as suspects days ago, said National police spokesman Maj. Gen. Sisno Adiwinoto.Adiwinoto said the fresh inquiry was partly based on forensic testing in the United States that showed Munir was likely poisoned during a layover in Singapore, 30 to 90 minutes before he died."Based on this, the crime scene was Changi Airport, Singapore," Adiwinoto said.
