21 Days Later Acrylic Painting on Paper
Our fires have been burning for 3 weeks now, the sky is strange, the landscape looks pale and feverish. I am finding acrylic to be expressive and spontaneous, and quickly painted this one tonite, looking out the back door. About 8x12" on bristol drawing paper.Incidentally, I used a limited palette of hansa yellow med, quin red, bone black and titanium white. yellow+black=green! Thanks for looking a

Acrylic Aquariums Work Great for Fish Lovers and for Home Decor
Showing off your prize fish? Or just looking for something new in beautiful home decor? Acrylic aquariums are the best buy for your money. Here are at least three good reasons to buy one of the newer "high-tech" acrylic aquariums: 1. Acrylic aquariums are much lighter weight than traditional glass aquariums. When you install one, or when you find yourself having to move one, the weight of a fully loaded aquarium may be more than you thought. Taking a 20 gallon aquarium as an example, a glass aquarium weights about 35 pounds. An acrylic aquarium the same size weighs about 17 pounds. When you add the weight of the water, the 20 gallon glass aquarium comes in around 225 pounds. The acrylic aquarium, then, would save several significant pounds in total weight. In addition, if you're buying you

Acrylic aquariums are known as being stronger than traditional glass fish tanks. In addition to being stronger, acrylic fish tanks are clearer and lighter. Ultramarine or indigo and burnt umber are what Paynes Gray is made up with - so that's a colour you really don't need to buy. If you mix your own you can tip it slightly bluer or slightly browner and have a little variety, which I think is more interesting than a flat colour.I then added touches of colour on the cliffs, in the clouds and the sea in purple, blues, green, ochre and brown coloured pencils. The underlying acrylics create a unity of colour and help with the nig

      SkyBlaze (Acrylic on Canvas-24x30 inches)
Hi all,Doesn’t it just…blaze! Red and fiery, yet moody with a brooding sense of unease?Umm, perhaps a brewing storm ready to…unleash it’s all! This one really made my day…following on from the focus on movement I had hitherto explored with Sunset Swirl, I again used loads of heavy texture combined with a frantic brush to evoke a somewhat Turneresque sky!I’ve deliberately used some darker tones both to accentuate the hot reds as well as helping to evoke that ‘uneasy’ turmoil present in a sky during that prelude to a storm.Again, this could so easily be an abstract piece. Take away the knowledge of subject and we are left simply with a riotous display of colour upon a tactile surface! All of which creates yet another level of interest adding to the overall enjoyment of the pie

Enough to say I’ve taken a few months away from the blogging treadmill to eh ‘rejuvenate that creative id’...phew!So, with a reinvigorated palette....Let me introduce Sunset Swirl…pure expressionist painting from head to toe. An unrestrained outpouring of colour (my humble opinion) in a style I simply relish! I love the whole semi-abstract feel about this picture. Yes it’s a sunset (a subject I simply just eat up) but it might just as easily be a playful display of swirling colour! An abstract array of blending forms. The sense of movement is suggested not only by the composition but also by the riot of surface layers building into an extremely effective impasto both of which give the painting it’s ‘breath’ of life.I was so pleased with thi

Don't Ask Why, 6x8, acrylicI'm having a jolly time with these Chroma Interactive Acrylics. They are allowing me to paint in an atmospheric way, and achieve results that I like but am too impatient to achieve in oils. ( It's a character flow, I know LOL) So here are a few things I've learned: You need to use A LOT of paint to get results similar to oils. Oil paint is, well oily or buttery, and spreads smoothly over the canvas, and it's more opaque even in thin layers. With acrylics you need to use a lot more paint because it doesn't spread over large areas as easily. Not a really big deal, just something to get used to. A good paint extender is a must. I'm using Golden brand soft gel gloss and like that very much. You can really get juicy effects and good brush strokes or use it to get lum

      Exploring the Seasons in Acrylic
Morning Meadow (spring), 6x8, acrylicPoppy Morning (summer), 6x8, acrylicAutumn Leaves (fall), 9x12, acrylicFrozen Edge (winter), 6x8, acrylicI've always been intrigued by acrylic paints. They seem very modern, comtemporary, edgy and 20th century. I've seen stunning acrylic paintings and some absolutely horrendous monstrosities. I've seen the most intricatedly detailed and accurate wildlife art, some beautifully expressive impressionist work and some wondefully textured almost sculptural abstact works as well. The colors seem vivid and saturated and the perks of soap and water clean up combined with their quick dry time add to their appeal. On the down side they never seem as full bodied, lush, buttery and rich as oil paints. Quite frankly many brands sem plastic-y and cheap looking. Creating soft atmospheric passages seem to take an entirely different working method than in oils because of the quick dry time so that's both a pro and a con). Courteeners, The - Acrylic
      - The Indie conveyer belt grinds on. Roll up Manchester's The Courteeners, given their chance to shine by independent Loog Records. The band received a certain amount of hype following their debut single 'Cavorting' so this second effort is the one that will either propel them to the front of the indie-boy pack or leave them stuck in limbo. The song starts with a gritty, fast paced riff, with the guitars being joined by the rest of the band and vocalist Liam Fray's accented vocal. About a ?libertine dream? (yeah, guess who they sound like) with a jingle-jangle verse and a chant-able chorus, ?Acrylic? is simply another song churned out by that very conveyer belt; catchy indie rock with little in the way of substance lyrically or musically. I'm sure 'Acrylic' will present The Courteeners with their time in the limelight, but it won't last. It also begs the question ? why do we need bands like this aside from keeping the ailing NME alive for a short while longer?

Acrylic photo frames work for me.
Why do babies and toddlers love to push buttons on the television? I guess the same reason they like the remote. It never fails... I get all of the girls settled watching a video that they've all agreed on (which is a miracle). I walk out of the room, and 30 seconds later the big girls are screaming because Becca has pushed a button and messed everything up.While at Wal-Mart several weeks ago, I was looking for a frame when the little cheap acrylic frames caught my eye. I thought, "That would be perfect to keep Becca's little fingers off of the tv buttons."Well, I'm happy to report that they are working fabulously. See all of the fingerprints on the frame below....Each fingerprint is one less scream from the big girls. Oh, and it also keeps random toys out of the VCR slot (not that that has ever happens at the circus house)!I just had to show the next picture too. It took about ten takes to get the above picture. The other nine are some variation of the picture below. Good

Serengeti Sky (Acrylic on box canvas 20x30 inches)
Hi allI have my other half to thank for resurrecting this one! Believe it or not it had been laying around my studio for the last couple of months simply begging for that finishing touch of…TLC (poor neglected thing!) Alas I was all too busy indulging my eh…abstract appetite, as well as getting to grips with the delights of my new (ish) airbrush. So hubby appears waving this canvas frantically under my nostrils with that…”Aren’t you going to finish this” look! (Thank you Darling) Hmm, well I have to admit that my first love is painting skies. Especially an African sky. Extra especially when it’s a scorching African sky of sizzling crimson hues. So, it’s really quite a mystery as to how I could have neglected my creation for quite so long?... (Artists hey!)I do like a story. That’s why narrative paintings have always held a particular fascination for me. You know, that one moment in a drama caught in an immortal stillness. Who is that man on the brow of the hill? Is he

Tequila Sunset (Acrylic on box canvas 24x30 inches)
Hi allDo you remember your first impression of a Tequila Sunrise? (umm, of course you do) That tall, beautiful, multi-coloured cocktail that both seduced our eyes and befuddled the senses. OK, so the next day we might well have cursed the very thought of the stuff, but…We never ever ever forgot either its name or the way it looked! So, when scratching my head for ideas to stretch my newly acquired airbrush skills this beverage inspired image (don't ask me why?) simply splashed back into my mind. Add a tall canvas, a simply setting and presto…a perfect setting for a simmering (tequila) sunset with that eh, definite twist of the exotic. As I said in my last post, the wonderful thing about using the airbrush is its ability to create subtle effects by building your surface in fine layers. I was really thrilled with the effervescent quality I captured in the sky by using multiple glazes of ultra marine and Cerulean blue. An effect enhanced by the complimentary use of the yellows and red

Mystic Glow (Acrylic on box canvas 24x30 inches)
Hi allIt’s no use. The urge to produce another sunset simply proved unstoppable (not that I put up much of a struggle) However…This time I thought I’d try a different approach? Much as I love to slap a paint loaded brush against a pristine canvas (well, we all have quirks) the urge for a more, eh delicate approach, sometimes beckons.Recent experiments with the airbrush have so far yielded some rather promising results. The latest of which is Mystic Glow (above)Not only can I achieve some incredibly subtle effects using multiple glazes but I also use substantially less paint (No mean consideration for the jobbing artist!) I also find I can therefore achieve a luminosity which perfectly enhances the subject matter.I also loved the idea of playing with reflections; light shimmering upon a silky smooth surface. There’s nothing quite brings a painting to life like light reflected off water. It’s another piece of the jig-saw; an added dimension which when combined with all the o

Shattered(Acrylic on box canvas 39x16 inches)
Hi allThe other evening I was driving home from a friend’s house (yes I was shattered!) it was dark, wet and flecks of drizzle were trickling down the wing mirror. A car pulled up quickly behind me, nose up my behind, lights dazzling (brain obviously on vacation..thank you Mr Dazzle man) before screeching past and off into the night leaving me to ponder as to why such imbeciles inhabit the roads….Except on this occasion said Mr Dazzle had offered me more than a glimmer of inspiration. As soon as I got home I started to work on the image in my head. The image of a dazzling light reflected from distorted glass. Shattered shards streaking outwards. The multi-coloured light pulse emanating into the surrounding black abyss. It’s not often that I am gifted the muse of inspiration by one of the worlds road jockeys. In this case his negligence and lack of courtesy yielded me the precious nugget of a good idea. So, thank you Mr. Razzle Dazzle man!Catch you laterShirley

Fantast Flowers (Acrylic on box canvas 30x24 inches)
Hi allI had in mind for some time the idea of doing a series of paintings featuring flowers. Not simply pretty petals and manicured border fodder. But rather…ummm, flowers with a differenceWell, we all like flowers (don’t we?) and I’ve always been drawn toward their infinite variety, transitory beauty and eh…flawless design. Dandelions are especially ephemeral. We’ve all held one up and…puff….gone, a myriad floating seeds. They are also quite visually striking, especially up close! It was whilst looking at macro photography of magnified objects that I had the idea for this series. Close up, cropped images in a highly stylized manner. One of the great joys of being an artist is to take the familiar and by invention create a new way of seeing it!Catch you later Shirley

Yes…really! Walla, nature sows yet more seeds to set the creative juices flowing (if you pardon the gastronomic metaphors!)But I really cannot say it enough, sunsets are delicious! Rustic Edge (Acrylic on canvas 24x30 inches)
Hi all One of the great joys I get from abstract painting is the freedom to indulge in the wonderful possibilities of surface. For me that blank canvas is like a playground of infinite possibility simply begging to be unleashed!I love to play with texture, to tease the canvas with a variety of contrasting marks and spontaneous passages. Rustic Edge is my attempt to evoke that effect that the elements have upon a surface. Wind and rain upon a corrugated roof or the gradual corrosion of a rusty car in some forgotten field. I love that worn look as metal corrodes and a myriad subtle shades are released as the light hits it from a dozen angles.I was also really lucky with the light when I photographed this one. Sometimes, no matter how much you prepare, you just can’t seem to capture your ‘labour of love’ to its best advantage. (Very disheartening) but here the Gods smiled and the light caught the surface perfectly…well, as near perfectly as modesty allows!Catch you laterShirley

Ink and Acrylic Sketches—new art supplies and fruit from the Farmer’s Market
I love to play in my sketchbook. I’ve had so many shows lately that the pressure has been on to turn out finished pieces, but sometimes I think this is how I like to spend my time the most. It enables me to test drive ideas, relax, and enjoy the “doing” of art. The pears in the shallow bowl are ink sketches, with acrylic washes laid over while the ink was too wet. I get impatient. Below the pears are my new bottle of Sennelier Walnut Ink, and a little inkwell I got in the gift shop at Sturbridge Village. It’s made there in the pottery shop, and it works really well! The apple and pear on the facing page are from the Brewster Farmer’s Market. They are painted in Golden Fluid Acrylics, with no preliminary drawing; I just went in straight with paint—always my favorite painting method! For the pear, I experimented with the Irridescent Gold Deep, using it to mix my greens, and with ochre. The shimmer is quite subtle when combined with the other colors. W

I always think that it is a fantastic idea to have a mega aquarium in a shopping mall. First, it helps to occupy little ones when mom is busy shopping while dad babysits with ease. Second, it livens the entire space of the mall as those fishes add life and colours to the material ambience. Third, it is relaxing for shoppers, thus, complementing the retail therapy aspects. Guardians (Acrylic on box canvas Size 61x76cm)
Hi all,I felt a return to a blatantly ethnic theme was way overdue! So, what better than a couple of highly stylized figures in ‘full on’ tribal mode. Simple composition yet… evoking that warm earthy quality that so epitomizes the whole African mystique. I really love doing these semi-abstracted paintings. What I aim to do (and not always successfully!) is lay down several washes while subtly diffusing the colours to give me a warm and vibrant background where the colours blend both evenly and naturally. Then using the palette knife I create my stylized figures with a fairly thick impasto gently shaped and finished with brush and fingers. Walla…a genuine slice of ethnic flavored painting to please Pablo himself.Trying different styles and themes is a certain recipe to bringing a greater degree of depth and skill to your work. A painting such as Guardians (with its heavily stylized elements) works (in my opinion) all the more successfully because of my time spent doing paintin

      How to Apply Acrylic Nails
By Virginia Reali The first ten steps in preparing to apply acrylic nails are the most important as these steps will determine success or failure: 1. Clean your hands and spray with anti-bac.2. Push the cuticles back with an orangewood sticks/cuticle sticks.3. Lightly buff the shine off the nail with a 100/180 grit file.4. Apply the tip. Ensure you have selected the correct size for each nail, do this first and lay them out from large to small for each nail. Cut the tip to the desired length.5. Run line eliminator across the seamline of each tip and blend with a file.6. Gently buff the shine off the tip (do not do this if you are using airbrushed or tips with a design, only do this for natural coloured tips).7. Remove all the dust from your nails with a nail brush.8. Spray the nail again with Anti-Bac spray.9. Apply Nail Prep to the natural part of the nail - this removes the excess oils from the nail plate. Allow to thoroughly dry.10. Apply a dab of Primer to the centre of each nail

Beginners Acrylic Painting - What Palette and Brushes to Buy?
Beginners Acrylic Painting - What Palette and Brushes to Buy?By Catherine Calder Starting a new hobby can be a bit daunting, don’t you think? There’s everything to buy and no previous knowledge about what to get. You go into a store and the range is huge. “I’m just beginning with acrylic paints and I only want to buy a paint brush!” Well, when you’re beginning with acrylic paints there are a few things you need to know before you get as far as the store. The key thing with acrylic paint is that it dries very quickly which can a blessing when you are ready to tidy away. Or a curse if you don’t know how quickly it dries and it ruins your brush! When the paint dries it is impossible to remove it from clothing, surfaces and brushes. So cover yourself with ‘painting clothes’ and be sure to clean your brushes before the paint dries on them. Once you have the right equipment this isn’t a problem. Acrylic Paint Palette Beginners to acrylic painting shou

      new acrylic painting started
It's a good job that a fractured coccyx does not affect ones ability to stand at an easel But, in fact, it is more comfortable to stand than to sit.....I have sent off an entry form to the Edinburgh Art Awards 2007 (nothing to do with Scotland) which is a new award open to any artist residing in the South Island of New Zealand. As I have yet to complete a painting to enter all I put on the entry was 'Untitled' (Acrylic)! Entries have to be in for the jury by 15th July so I had better get a move on AND get it right! This is on archival quality canvas 24" x 36", and my intention is to try and keep it loose by painting with 1.5", 1" brushes throughout. My reference is part of a photograph from the artists Reference Library at Wet Canvas. Yesterday I made a start and drew it up with pastel pencil then painting in a washy under-painting to indicate shapes and shading. Create a Frame using Acrylic Paint
I know that this technique might not be anything new, but I would just liked to share this twist of mine in that technique. I've recently created a layout title "Dinolicious" in my family gallery using this technique. To create an acrylic paint frame, just follow the steps below:1. Place your matting of your photograph onto your cardstock.2. Using some acrylic paints, dabbed around the edges of the mat and partly overflowing onto the cardstock. (This is to hide the straight edges of the original mat) Try to mix different colours of acrylic paints for a more interesting look.3. Add some doodling directly on top of the dried acrylic paints. Try to doodle the whole of the section which are covered by the acrylic paints.4. To add your photograph, use a cuticle scissors or an crafting knife, cut part of your doodle which overflows towards your photograph. With that you will have your very own tailored made acrylic paint frame for your photograph in your layout.

Just about everything can be started with a geometric shape. Think of bottles and vases as square or rectangle first. Make you basic shape and then fill in the bottle inside of it. If you make a line down the center of the shape you will have two halves to work with. When you look at a live oak tree, think of a half circle for the basic canopy shape. Looking at objects that way will open up new ways to draw and paint. Try not to look at a tree as a tree, but rather as form, mass, shape, line, angles, tone and color. Artists must train themselves not to look at objects the way other people do.

A lot depends on whether you are a hobbyist, semi professional or whether you make your living from your art entirely. As a hobbyest, you are painting for pleasure. You may sell some of your paintings but there is no urgent need for a large inventory. If you are making a living, it is wise to have a deep inventory to draw from. For example, I have been contacted twice this week with new exhibition opportunities, one a couple of hours a way and one in Virginia. In both cases the person was interested in specific themes for the show and gallery. Because I have a large inventory of work, it was fairly simple to come up with 6 larger sized Florida theme paintings for one show and 5 small paintings for the Virginia venue which were not Florida themes. Once you have a brand name you are in demand and opportunitie

Drawing is fundamental to all good art in my opinion. Drawing teaches you about edge work, form, value, light, proportion and composition just to name a few of it's benefits.Get into the habit of drawing for even five minutes a day and your painting will improve. Whenever you come up with an idea for a painting, do the composition and value study in pencil first. Make a series of thumbnail drawings for your composition and pick the best two out of the bunch. Use those sketches to make your painting composition and it will be better than anything you would have thrown on the canvas. Drawing can also help you overcome fears about painting subjects. Because it is just a cheap piece of paper and a pencil, you won't mind messing it up and making mistakes. Some people have real hang ups about wasting paint

Blondheim Art Acrylic or Oil Warm Up Exercise
Painters TipI do these great little exercises to warm up for painting. The lines up and down are with watered down paint. The lines from left to right are paint with acrylic glazing medium. I then mix the paint with gloss gel medium and do the swatches, using the stripes of color mixed. In other words, whatever lines form the square I'm going to paint, have those colors mixed together for the swatch of color. The purpose of this exercise is doing brushwork, mixing harmonic colors, practicing glazing and different thicknesses of paint, and using multiple mediums. It goes pretty quickly and is a good way to start the painting session. I use index paper and punch holes in it to save in my painting journal.I sometimes change palettes to practice variety, but the key is to use a limited palette. My palette for this exercise was the minimal palette I sometimes use on location:Cadmium Red LightFrench Ultramarine BlueCadmium Yellow LemonIvory BlackI left off the white that I usually use. This e

      Acrylic Painting Tip
If you have any experience with acrylic painting, you have probably already noticed that it is a fast drying medium. Many new artists squeeze far too much acrylic paint out on the palette and wind up wasting it. Make certain you do not squeeze out more than you need. To keep the paint moist on your palette, get yourself a spray bottle and fill it with water. Keep it handy and spray a mist over your paints every once in a while to keep them from drying up.

Right about now I'm dreaming of my annual beach trip. Painters Tip My above journal segues into an issue that professional artists have to deal with regularly. We are much in demand for our time. My very first acrylic painting: My brother and his son Max
This is my first go at acrylic painting. Before that, I usually painted either with oil, which is very grateful when it comes to modelling the shapes and colours, due to its slow drying ability, or with water colour which has exactly the opposite features. The great thing about water colour is that you can just put away your brushes when finished and turn to someting else, as to oil, you always have to clean up after you worked and the smell of turpentine can make you dizzy. As to acrylic, it is right in the middle between the properties of both oil and water colourl. It dries fast, does not smell, is a bit blunt and shallow compared to oil, which always looks great and colourful. You have to work fast as the paint litterally dries under your brush. Anyway. I took the original photo to this picture with my mobile phone at the Berlin Starbucks and instantly planned on turning it into an acrylic painting. It is still quite unfinished for now. I'll certainly have to rework both faces, bu

I love to use acrylic for florals. The crisp clean color and edge work makes acrylic ideal for flowers. Of course I have done many florals with oils,,casein, and even watercolors from time to time over the years, but I love them with acrylic the best. For landscape work you just can't beat oils. Landscape requires soft and hard edge work, a lot of atmospherics and rich and subtle tones. Oils have such diversity and richness that they are ideally suited. For fine detail and realism, egg tempera and casein are king. I am not a watercolorist, but I have seen lovely floral work with that medium as well. My point here is not to single out one medium over another. I am suggesting

Check into getting studio insurance and public liability insurance. To me it is a necessary evil to write that check every year. I have clients and students in and out of my studio all the time. There is always the possibility of injury or theft. A fall or broken bone can cost thousands of dollars. Do not assume your homeowner's or renter's insurance will cover you because when you run a business as an artist, it won't. If you do not have an open studio where friends, clients, or students come, then you will not need the liability insurance, but you will need protection against theft. One of my dealers was kind enough to chastise me about the signature. People weren't purchasing my work because of the gaudy signature on it, not because they disliked my paintings. I decided to do some unscientific polling on preferences. I talked with artists who were pro, dealers, and a few museum people I knew, as well as art patrons. They all agreed that a signature on the actual painting was very important, with real paint, not markers or stamps. They did not like large signatures and preferred the last name only. Not lots of initials, multiple names or worse cute names like art by Suzie, or first names only. They also disliked a lot of scrolly writing with angles tilts and flourishes. There is little to be gained from donating work other than the ability to help others with your talent and skill. In the 20 years I have been donating, not one direct sale has been produced. I do it because I am a giver and for no other reason. I don't doubt that it makes people feel positive about me as an artist, but it does not produce clients or sales for me directly. I'm sure there are exceptions. Other artists may have ha better luck than I. I have a browse bin in my studio where I put older paintings and paintings of lower value.
