Flagship departments are chosen based on their past performance as accredited law enforcement agencies and serve to provide examples to other agencies.Accreditation for police agencies is voluntary and the Staunton Police Department has been accredited since 1985; becoming only the sixth department in the country with that distinction. After a protracted, divisive protest over the incoming president that shut down the school for several days, issues brought up during that time have subjected the school to increased scrutiny. As reported by CNN.com, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education has decided to delay its decision on whether to renew Gallaudet’s accreditation.
