All four of USF's campuses have grown, for a record total of 45,000 students, according to first-day fall enrollment figures released this afternoon. And the freshman class that began classes Monday is, academically, the strongest in university history, with an average SAT score of 1148 and an average ACT of 25. Last year's freshman class had an average SAT of 1131. And this year's average high school GPA for freshmen is 3.71, compared to 3.61 last fall. “These are exciting times at USF,” said USF President Judy Genshaft.  “Something the founders of this university dreamed of and worked so hard for is more real than ever.  Our campuses are attracting more and more terrific students." The main campus in Tampa saw the least amount of growth, just 3 percent, for a total of 38.417 students; while the Lakeland and Sarasota campuses each grew by more than 8 percent. UF's athletic association will donate $6-million to support several academic initiatives threatened by the looming state budget cuts, UF president Bernie Machen announced today. "Our athletics programs have had tremendous success during the past couple of years," Machen said. "It takes a great academic university to be a top athletic university." Some of the money will sustain the Florida Opportunity Scholars program, which covers tuition, room and board for low-income students who are the first in their family to attend a four-year university.
