I had a bit more fun with some abstract digital art pieces today, this is the one that turned out the best. I need to learn how to work smaller than 200inch x 200inch, the file sizes are getting a bit out of hand and my computer isn't responding very well. For the last month or two, fellow blogger and photographer Mark Graf has intermittently written in his blog about photographing rock samples, particularly Pietersite, as part of his 'Inspired By Stone' project. Ever since seeing the images he has posted as part of this project I have simply been mesmerized by them as well. Given the comments made to the blog about my image "The Road Less Traveled", I thought that it might be worthwhile to talk about how one can think about and plan these types of images.'The Road Less Traveled'Copyright Howard GrillOnce a scene has been chosen on which this effect is to be tried, I think there are two very important initial steps to consider. The first is how much to zoom. I start by framing the image with the shortest focal length that I want to use as a starting 'size' for the shot. I then zoom out and choose the longest focal length I want for the shot. In the example above, I wanted the road to approach the left side of the image without 'spilling' out of the frame. By organizing the image this way, I can determine the starting and finishing focal lengths for the zoom. I don't just zoom the entire available focal length of the lens.The second issue is to decide where you want the zoom to seem to emanate from. The lens should be centered at this location. Said

Eight selected abstracts from the “Thousand Sketches” are currently for sale on Art Bash, a New Zealand online Gallery and art site. The selection is not so much a representation as a group that highlights my abstract explorations. It is good for me to see this small pool highlighted in this way. Without a doubt, one of the most wonderful flowers to photograph in a abstract form is the Statice flower, or “Limonium latifolia”. Shooting this with the Canon 100mm macro, an extension tube, and the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 lens attached in reverse and the use of reflectors allows me to capture a shot with a quick fall off in depth. I like to focus in right at the crisp looking edges of the flower, then let the rest to become a soft blur. There are many abstract compositions to be found in the statice flower, and every year I am continually drawn to photograph them again. This season, why not give them a try? It has been said that if one wants to be successful at selling their photographs they shouldn't be making abstract images. Abstracts don't fly off the shelves, at least that's what I've been told. I make abstract images because I enjoy it. I like looking for lines, shapes and patterns in places where most non-photographers wouldn't. I find it very satisfying to find something that looks like it might be interesting when isolated from its surroundings and then going on to compose an image and tweak the camera position until it seems to come together in the viewfinder. With a click, it's then frozen forever. But do these images interest others? Sure, an abstract with saturated colors and distinct angles are going to grab one's attention, but what about the more subtle ones with gentle changes in tonality and less dramatic shapes? I find them personally satisfying, but I'm not at all sure that they have broad appeal. Images have to stand by themselves. In
