So, as I mentioned the other day, I'll be making a 3D engine specifically suited to technically simpler 3D games, such as indie developers might want to make. I've started working on this now, and there's two major lessons I've learned over the years... [ read more ]

Some of our most fundamental programming concepts are steeped in confusion. Because software development is such a young discipline, we often question and redefine many of the basic definitions to suit our personal understandings. While this is a problem, it is also to be expected. Terms and definitions are the building blocks on which we build all of the higher concepts, if these are weak or incorrect they can lead us in circles long before we realize it is too late. Thinking in depth about their inner meanings is important. Older disciplines have no doubt survived much more discourse on their base topics; we are really only at the beginning of this stage. Other than what is mathematically rigorous, we should absolutely question our assumptions, it is the only way for us to expose our bias
After borrowing rich colors from brilliant painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer for their fall 2007 collections, designers kept an artistic mood and, for spring 2008, they came up with one of kind abstract painterly prints. This trend brings forward a palette of clear, intense colors with splashes of white and black.

We have long since been great admirers of all things Tokyo flash as you can always count on them to deliver the goods when it comes to breathtaking, innovative and decidedly modern styling, however, in this week where we find ourselves playing devil’s advocate in just about every post we cannot help but feel that their Kyokusen digital watch is perhaps loosing sight of usability merely for the sake of bold aesthetics.
Or, to put the above paragraph in a rather more succinct fashion, perhaps we just need to ask the following question: when does a digital watch (or any timepiece for that matter) cease being a timepiece per se and become something akin to an item of interactive jewellery that just happens to represent (rather more so than tell) the time?
Certainly it would be true to say that by far the majority of Tokyo Flash’s collection of watches serve to blur the boundaries between telling the time and representing the time (there is a distinct difference between the two) their
This morning I was reading an article titled Enfants terribles and reading other people's comments, I was a little taken back. I had no idea that childless people had them feelings towards people with children. The woman who wrote the book they are referring too has children as well. I am on the fence with this one, it states that people are going to either love her or hate her, and I am a little bit of both. I hate that she is so damn right about what she writes, and that she seems to be missing what its all about, but I love that she has offered her humorous take on parenting, and the reasons that she states to not have kids, really don't make a whole lot of sense, and I could easily come up with twice as many reasons to have kids then rather not have kids. At one point in the article she states she regrets having children. People were shocked about that, and I can't say that I was, I know I have regretted having kids, that's for damn sure. The good only outweighs the bad slight
A new article was added to the knowledge-base - Abstraction Leaks and QTP!
The article explains abstraction in programming, and demonstrates (some of) the different abstraction layers in QTP. It goes on to show what happens when an abstraction can't pull it's weight (Abstraction Leak), and the price we pay when that happens in QTP.
The article is meant to set the theoretical base for designing our own abstractions framework for QTP, that will be revealed in the coming months.
Enjoy :)
It seems to me that the more a word refers to something concrete then the better chance that people will be able to agree on the use and meaning of the word. The more abstract or ethereal the referent of a word is, the greater is the disagreement on the meaning. In physics and the physical sciences it is important for words to have fixed meanings in order for communication to be successful. One of the principle of science is that observations ('facts' if you want to use that overused word) should be reproducible. So the idea of operationalism was born. What a measurement 'is' is the set of operations that lead to the measurement. So, although we have a general concept of length, 'length' in any given experiment is the set of operations which lead to the figure we call the length, and some processes are intrinsically more stable and accurate than others. This is then taken to a higher level by accepting a general standard for how to measure certain things, and this allows th
It is much easier to conceptualize love than it is to consistently demonstrate it in a practical, lived-out manner. Many can articulate lofty ideals of enduring faithfulness and mutual sacrifice in glowing abstract terms but its application in trivial and emotive daily affairs is deficient. It's hard to anticipate the abrasive conflicts that arise in relationships within or intending towards marriage. Once the initial romance and infatuation subsides and the individuals began to grow comfortable in the relationship their true personalities and characteristics show through, particularly the negative aspects. Part of the reason is that a sense of security and normality has been attained and, conversely, a tendency to take the relationship for granted. Conflicts typically arise over seemingly
Friend and artist Philip Edson has been a great source of encouragement for my abstract work and has given me much sound advice. He has suggested that I may be confusing myself by looking at works by many other artists. And do you know? I believe that he is absolutely right! As I surf around art blogs and websites I see so much that I admire that my own 'vision' gets more and more indistinct and uncertain. Also 'playing' on the Internet is the perfect alternative to working at the easel for a born procrastinator like myself! But I couldn't resist just half an hour of surfing this morning ......And I found two very interesting artists today at the artists.org - both are female but are very different in style and subject matter. Sophia Hadjipapa's paintings are largely set in and around the bathroom, of all things! Painted from a variety of angles her work is arresting, not only because of the subject matter but also because of her use of colour and design. However, the accompanyin
The way I see it we are entering into a critical time for Microsoft. They have created, or are in the process of creating a development environment in which we are dependent on their skill sets to develop a ton of abstract tools.
