Vote Oh For Fucks Sake : Abstinence posters for the Election
Trying to keep my hat out of the political ring is difficult at the moment when it seems that the Powers That Be don't have a fucking clue at all on so many issues. Believing in a picture is worth a thousand words I am going to litter the build up to the UK General Election with a barragement of abstinence themed posters... it's not like the Tories have more of a clue now is it! A New Look At Abstinence
A New Look At Abstinence - Let's talk about abstinence. The word "abstinence" seems to cause some youth and adults to roll their eyes (particularly if the adult is uttering the word in front of a youth), and others to strongly defend deeply held values and beliefs. If we separate ourselves into these two camps, I believe we are missing some really important points about abstinence. Why MTV abstains from mentioning abstinence
I thought you might enjoy these laughable snippets from an article that ran on MTV.com regarding the CDC's new finding that one in four teen girls has an STD. Gee, do you think they have an agenda? See if you can't identify some faulty logic in their statements. (My comments are italicized)"There should not be a freak-out factor over this," Wyand* said. "But it should be sobering and remind us that we have to utilize the prevention tools that we do have."And what might those "prevention tools" be, Mr. Wyand? Would abstinence be a viable prevention tool worth mentioning to teens?"It is always important to use protection when engaging in sexual intercourse, but condoms aren't a guarantee against HPV."So, let me get this straight: Condoms are a "prevention tool" but they aren't a guarantee ag

Abstinence Debunked: Lessons from the Front Lines
Regular readers are going to get a treat this morning- Freethinker, long absent, is back and she means business! As a social worker, psych major, and soon to be starting law school, Freethinker tends to get really wonky, so if you can't stand the citations get out of the library. Without further ado...__________This freethinker’s fired-up, and because I am not restrained by the traditional “follow the leader without questioning his authority” paradigm that many people have so entangled themselves in, I must speak out, and speak freely, the way I as an American was intended to.I’ve been seeing an increasing amount of public and media attention being given to abstinence-only (until marriage) education; more specifically, that it does not work. As a supporter of and worker for Planned Parenthood and the ACLU’s reproductive freedom project, I have some expertise in this arena, and here is what all the experts have to say about it: WE HAVE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR YEARS!!!But since i

Abstinence Strongest Strategy for Sustained Recovery
Almost all addiction starts from alcoholism. Recent studies reports that the best chance to sustain ones recovery is to completely abstain from alcohol consumption. Overall, the study found that people in recovery who were abstainers at the beginning of the study were least likely to relapse during the three years reviewed (2002-2005). Fifty-one percent of asymptomatic risk drinkers (people who did not have abuse or dependence symptoms, but who drank more than the recommended guidelines to avoid relapse) experienced a recurrence of alcohol dependence symptoms. But researchers discovered that abstaining worked best for those over 25.

Extra: Comprehensive Sex Education vs. Teaching Abstinence
Knowledge is power. A Lack of knowledge leads to ignorance. Those responsible for teaching and spreading information are combating ignorance. This is why comprehensive sex education is the best way to teach teenage boys and girls about the risks they take when engaging in sexual behavior. Texas has a reputation for abstinence-only sex education but still has the highest pregnancy rate in America. America has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the developed world. The pregnancy rate is twice as high as England, Wales and Canada and is eight times higher than the Netherlands and Japan. Teens in America are also more likely than their English counterparts to have brief sporadic relationships and are less likely to use contraceptives. Guttmacher Institute estimates that 750,000 teen pregnancies occur each year and 82% of them are unintended, with one quarter ending in abortion. By 2002 one third had not received education contraception. With numbers like these, teenagers in the U.S

      Abstinence approach gets unlikely ally
Sex-education programs with a single message -- don't do it -- survive after the GOP-led Congress, with a Democrat's helpWASHINGTON -- In the 1990s, amid a growing culture war over the role of religion and morality in public policy, Republicans used their congressional majorities to crank up funding for programs that encouraged teens to abstain from sex until marriage. But now, though Democrats have taken control of Congress, abstinence-only programs are surviving attempts to shut them down. And they could even get an increase with the aid of an unlikely ally: House Appropriations Committee Chairman David R. Obey (D-Wis.), one of the old liberal lions."We're expecting funding to be pretty comparable to what it was in the past," said Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Assn. "Those who oppose abstinence education are probably more surprised than I am."Democrats have long criticized the programs, saying they're ineffective in combating teen pregnanc

      Abstinence programmes fail
Programs to encourage sexual abstinence, which American conservatives see as a keystone of efforts to prevent HIV infection, fail just as much in the United States as they do in developing countries, a new study says. Researchers reporting in Saturday's British Medical Journal (BMJ) say an overview of 13 published investigations into abstinence programs, conducted among nearly 16 000 American youngsters, found no evidence that the schemes work. The study covered research into the performance of so-called "abstinence only" programs. These are schemes that encourage teenagers to delay their sexual debut and not have multiple partners after they begin sexual activity. There is no promotion of condoms or other methods of safer sex or contraception. In contrast, "abstinence plus" programs are those that promote abstinence but also safer sexAbstinence programs have no effect on sexual activity"No [abstinence only] program affected incidence of unprotected vaginal sex, number of partners, cond

Abstinence as abuse, or society keeps getting stranger
Now it is abuse to not kiss a guy before marriage?Michelle looks happy enough, but it can't possibly be real. Not when:her parents so brainwashed her from the time she was not capable of making an informed decision, and then insulated her from society to maintain that indoctrination so severely, that this girl has reached college age having never been kissed by a boy (or a girl, presumably) and is happy about that. (emphasis in original). And how dare she be happy about it. Unfathomable. This is why we need public education and sex education starting in kindergarten. Not so that children can be protected from venereal diseases and unplanned pregnancies, but to make sure they don't live a life of regret. These, dear Michelle are the things we regret in life. We regret the things we didn’t do. We regret not kissing our English teachers. I hope you come to that realization sooner rather than later, before the regrets pile up so high they eat you alive when you finally notice them.

Drop in Teen Sex Linked to Abstinence Programs
Teen sexual activity has decreased dramatically in the US over the past decade, according to reports by official government statistics, and the drop is being linked to the growing use of abstinence programs in schools.Between 1991 and 2005, teenage sexual activity rates dropped significantly across three population groups--black, Hispanic and white, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control. While the greatest reduction was seen among black teens, down to 67.6 percent in 2005 from a high of 81.4 percent in 1991, the reversal among white students was also significant. The rate of teenage sexual activity among white students has remained below the 50 percent mark since the mid 90’s and is now at 43 percent. Among Hispanic teens, the drop was smaller, from 53.1 to 51.0.Teen pregnancy rates have also dropped markedly since peaking in 1994--according to the National Vital Statistics Report, the unwed birthrate for teens age 15-19 years has dropped by 25 percent since 1994.

Beyond Negligence: Bush and Abstinence-Based Programs
Politicians who support a policy which has been discredited by scientific data of which they are unaware are acting negligently. Persons in their role should be aware of relevant evidence and should use such evidence to evaluate their policies. In other words, they should know about the evidence which they do not know about. However, the situation is far more serious when policy makers know of the contradictory evidence and continue to endorse the discredited policy. This is more serious because they had the relevant evidence and intentionally ignored it. This is an insult to the people they represent.Take the example of abstinence-based sexual education programs. Scientific data, collected at the request of the U.S. Congress, reveal that abstinence classes are ineffective. These programs are politically popular among conservatives seeking to pander to their socially conservative base, however, they have been repeatedly criticized by educators and scientists and wasting taxpayer dollar

      Abstinence Students Still Sexually Active
WASHINGTON (April 14) - Students who took part in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex as those who did not, according to a study ordered by Congress. Also, those who attended one of the four abstinence classes that were reviewed reported having similar numbers of sexual partners as those who did not attend the classes. And they first had sex at about the same age as other students - 14.9 years, according to Mathematica Policy Research Inc. The federal government now spends about $176 million annually on abstinence-until-marriage education. Abstinence Education: Just Wait is Just Worthless
Last week Anderson Cooper had this segment about Sex and Salvation. Perhaps it was sweeps week, and that is why they had to repeat it every day. It did have all the elements--primarily plenty of shots of bikini clad Girls Gone Wild on Spring Break in Florida. However, to give it legitimate journalistic value it also focused on some evangelical college students who went down there to tell the others not to fuck.I have to admit, I liked the Christian kids better than the others. They were fresh faced and healthy. The regulars were drunk, sunburnt and lobotomized. And probably the good kids had a better time in the end. They went away with the feeling perhaps their abstinence message hit home with a few. Moreover, they went back with both their brains and genitals intact. But, according to a congressional report, it seems unlikely most of them will remain true to their abstinence pledge. However, I do suspect, by and large, they will not engage in mindless humping. From the Congressiona

Abstinence-Only Programs Don’t Work, Study Finds
Students who participated in sexual-abstinence education programs partially funded by the federal government were just as likely to have sex, and had the same number of sexual partners, as those who did not take part in the programs, a federally mandated report said today. Both groups of youths—those who participated in abstinence education, and those who participated in other health education programs available in their areas—had a median age of first intercourse of 14 years and 9 months. However, those students who participated in the abstinence programs were just as likely to use contraception as those who did not. Some critics of abstinence education programs have argued that they reduce rates of contraception usage.~The enactment of Title V, Section 510 of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 significantly increased the funding and prominence of abstinence education as an approach to promote sexual abstinence and healthy teen behavior. The grant program has received $50 million a year since its inception in 1997. Talk about wasting money, the Federal Governemnt is dispersing millions of dollars to target adults up to age 29 with the “abstinence” message. Some 90% of of people aged 19-29 have had (and probably still are) sex and they think throwing some money at an ad campaign is suddenly going to get these folks to wait until marriage?! It would be laughable if they weren’t so serious about it. The Feds want to reduce births to unwed mothers in the 19-29 age group which I’ll admit is a noble goal. Why not work with the way people are and provide Norplant, or other contraceptive measures, to these folks instead wasting tax dollars by giving them a message they will completly ignore… “They’ve stepped over the line of common sense,” said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that supports sex education. “To be preaching abstinence when 90% of people are having sex is in essence to lose touc
