      Legally Absinthe Minded?
The spirit once known as verte or “the green fairy”, was said to cause hallucinations and turn drinkers into outright junkies. It has been blamed for everything from murder to self-mutilation. I had this drink once or maybe twice - I did not have those hallucinations or whatsoever… (Does it mean, I am some [...]

There are several ways people approach eating candy. One of the main two is nostalgia for a specific candy and the other is the adventure some candies offer; some people just like enjoying their tried-and-true treat from their childhood and others love to try the newest and craziest candy for the experience. Drink Art: Absinthe Drinker by Viktor Oliva
Drink Art is a regular feature of Lyke2Drink that looks at famous works of art depicting men and women enjoying life and drink.Absinthe DrinkerViktor OlivaCzech, (1861-1928) Viktor Oliva, an illustrator and painter, attended the Prague Academy of Art and the Munich Academy. He is mainly recognized for his Art Nouveau style work. His most famous painting the Absinthe Drinker hangs in the Cafe Slavia in Prague, Czech Republic, where Oliva spent many days. Oliva discovered absinthe while in Paris, living and drinking among other artists. The ghostly green visage in the painting brings to life the alleged mind-altering qualities of the absinthe of the day. After returning to Prague he became the art director at a leading magazine and also was commissioned to paint the ceilings of several buildi

      Absinthe, the crazy drink
Today we are going to talk about Absinthe because somehow it was part of French history through artists and Parisian intellectuals ... no other drinks have had a such romantic story and have been prohibited with so much fervor. From ancient times until the 19th century, Artemisia Absinthium is an ingredient in many medicines. Also vermifuge and antiseptic, its applications are many. This drug use could go on much longer if one day, a strange encounter was made in Switzerland at the end of the 18th century. An adjutant bought the formula from a doctor. He went into partnership with his son-in-law Henri Louis Pernod who will forever be associated with absinthe. For 30 years, absinthe remains a regional drink until the conquest of Algeria by France. Effective against malaria and dysentery, absint

      Absinthe No Longer Absent
As of December 21, American-made absinthe will be legally available in the United States after a 95 year absence. Bay Area distiller St. George Spirits, best known for their high-end Hanger One vodka, will be selling bottles of the newly legalized liquor at its Alameda tasting room and at a few select retail locations. Though the absinthe must legally have less than 10 parts per million of thujone, the chemical thought to be responsible for the liquor's hallucinogenic effect, the high alcohol content (typically around 120 proof), should get you to where you want to go.

Breakfast Links: Plasma Antenna, Lost Japan & Absinthe
Now they’re making some new fangled antenna that uses plasma instead of metal. So… it’s an antenna that uses heated gas and vanishes when you turn it off. Does this ring any bells? Yeah. This is so obvious it’s embarrassing, they’re making light sabers and using this “antenna” cover to keep it secret. Please, we are not so easily fooled. Check out these crazy images of various buildings in Japan that have been abandoned and grown over. It’s all in Japanese but each one of them could be movie set for some post apocalyptic world. Why are there so many abandoned buildings in the middle of forests in Japan?? (the first 4 “file” links at the top work, the rest don’t seem to.) Seriously, if this abandoned amusement park doesn’t find it’s way into a movie, I don’t know what I’ll do - there’s a rusting ferris wheel there for the love of all that is good and holy. Absinthe Coming to Boston
I've read the history and heard the rumors about friends of friends going to Eastern Europe and sneaking back a bottle through customs, but I've never personally seen Absinthe. Well, apparently, the Green Fairy is on its way back to Boston.Viridian Spirits started importing absinthe made with grand wormwood into the US in May of this year. They're selling it under the name "Lucid." Click (here) to check out the official website. As of right now, Lucid is only available in New York and a few cities in New Jersey, but it's supposed to be coming to Boston on November 2nd. For those of you that can't wait a month, there's a list of retailers in NYC (here) where you can pick some up now.Patience has never been one of my virtues, and it just so happens that I will be in NYC this weekend. So, hopefully I can find some free time to hit up one of the liquor stores and pick up a bottle. Next stop, Crate and Barrel for some slotted spoons and Star Market for some sugar cubes. Know of An

      Absinthe: licoarea interzisa

Absinthe and My Last Day of Work
And the survey says…..I will be taking a shot of the green fairy on my last day of work! I recently moved the big day up to Thursday, November 8. Thank you to everyone who voted on this serious topic! Back in 1998, I visited Prague where Absinthe is readily available, though I didn’t get a chance to try it. Ironically, it was at a coworker’s party a few years ago in northern Virginia that I took my one and only shot. I remember it was very strong, and reminded me of Rumple Minz (100 proof peppermint schnapps). Still, the prospect of video recording my experience leaves me with a few butterflies, though I’m sure they’ll quickly die of alcohol poisoning once I down the liquor! Which occasion should I celebrate with a shot of Absinthe (140 proof, I will post video)?   Last day of work (~Nov 13) (35%, 8 Votes) 31st birthday (Sept 25) (30%, 7 Votes) Giving notice to resign at work (Oct 4) (17%, 4 Votes) Last day in USA (~Nov 27) (17%, 4 Votes) La

Mansinthe: The official Absinthe of Marilyn Manson
Next in line for celebrity liquors- Marilyn Manson. I’m not surprised that he, out of anyone, would come out with his own absinthe.  It fits the character he created. I’ve only had absinthe once (real absinthe) and I didn’t care for it.  I may not have had the sugar/water correct.  I don’t know.  It just tasted bad.  So bad that I didn’t consume enough to see a green fairy.  I’m willing to give it another shot, though. Manson is coming out with the real stuff, Mansinthe.  Of course, it will not be available in the states due to another set of antiquated laws. Here is the official web site/blog of the liquor (brush up on your German). http://www.mansinthe.com/

      The Influence Of Absinthe
It has been labeled as mind altering, and even been the blame of murder back in 1905. It's a strong liquor and some even label it as a dangerous drug. It's called Absinthe, the Green Fairy.Absinthe started out as a medicinal tonic invented by Dr. Pierre Ordinaire to administer to his patients. The concoction was made by distilling alcohol similar to moonshine in a plethora of herbs. Some of the herbs commonly used were anise, fennel, Angelica, Hyssop, Licorice, and peppermint, but the most notorious of them all was the grand wormwood. Wormwood was the herb that caused Absinthe it's biggest controversy due to the thujone content. Thujone is a terpene found in wormwood and is blamed for absinthe's secondary effects, which were hallucinations, convulsions and madness. All unfounded might I add.Absinthe has a very sordid history due to the prohibitionists of France during the 1800's. It also has a huge presence in art over the years. Many of the artists, poets and writers living or vi
