Unicode requires 16 bits and ASCII require 7 bits. Although the ASCII character set uses only 7 bits, it is usually represented as 8 bits. UTF-8 represents characters using 8, 16, and 18 bit patterns. UTF-16 uses 16-bit and larger bit patterns.

Vi starete chiedendo di cosa sto parlando, ebbene grazie a questa piccola guida riuscirete a visualizzare un filmato presente nel vostro PC in ASCII art.
Per fare questo è necessario mplayer e una libreria chiamata aalib.
Mplayer è uno dei player video più famosi per Linux e per installarlo potete seguire uno di questi tre metodi:
1- Dal terminale date il comando:
sudo apt-get install mplayer
2- Cercate “mplayer” in “Aggiungi/Rimuovi…” ed installatelo
3- Cercate il pacchetto “mplayer” con il Gestore pacchetti Synaptic ed installatelo
Una volta installato il programma, aprite il terminale e posizionatevi nella cartella in cui è presente il video che volete vedere.

Any web developer out there has their favorite FTP program as a major part of their web development arsenal. Whether it be FireFTP, CuteFTP, WS_FTP, Filezilla, SmartFTP or any other FTP program, they all have a setting that allows you to set how you wish to transfer your files.
What is Transfer Mode
Transfer mode is the method in which you wish to send your data to your server. Options are either ASCII, binary or automatic. (Binary in this case does not exactly refer to 1’s and 0’s). I’m sure 99% of users will have their transfer mode set to either binary or Automatic. Myself, I have it set to automatic, but do you actually know what the difference between ASCII and Binary is?
I’ll spare you the technical details but here’s the general rule:
If you can open the file in Notepad and understand it, then transfer the file using ASCII mode.
If it’s a bunch of random unintelligible characters in Notepad, then transfer the file using binary mode.

Did you know? You can type ASCII characters into any application. Press and hold the Left-Alt key, then using the numeric keypad, type the four-digit decimal number for the ASCII character you want, then release the Left-Alt key. For example, to type è, press and hold Left-Alt, then type 0232 on the numeric keypad. When you release the Left-Alt key, è will be typed.

ASCII-Art, was ist das überhaupt? Genau genommen sind das Bilder, die sich zeilenweise aus Buchstaben aufbauen, die dem ASCII-Zeichensatz entstammen. Im weitesten Sinne beschreibt ASCII-Art alle Bilder, die irgendwie aus Buchstabenmosaiken zusammengesetzt sind. In der Regel werden die Graustufen der Buchstaben, die auf Entfernung entstehen, dazu genutzt, die Graustufen des realen Bildes zu ersetzen. Früher, als E-Mail noch dazu diente Texte zu versenden, wurden gerne einmal kleine ASCII-Art Bilder als Visitenkarte genutzt.
Zum Erzeugen eigener ASCII Bilder, gibt es mittlerweile ein wirklich sehr gutes Tool namens IMG2TXT. Zu finden ist es unter http://www.degraeve.com/img2txt.php. Es bietet nicht nur die Möglichkeit ein simples Buchstabenabbild einer Fotografie zu ereugen, sondern auch mit benutzerdefinierten Phrasen zu arbeiten, die in die realen Farbtöne des Originals eingefärbt werden.

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day that is obsessed with Starwars. It caused me to remember about a site I had once seen.
The site entitled “Star Wars ASCIIMATION” is perhaps one of the coolest Star Wars fan sites to date. The creators of the site have built ASCII Art and animated it to show the story of Star Wars.
This may be one of the ultimate nerd hangouts, but I thought it was awesome!
After looking into it a little bit, it appears that you can get the same ascii show through telnet (without opening a web browser). Nathan at nathanr.ca explains how to do this on his blog:
“You can try this yourself by going to Start / Run and type: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl”
He also explained that some people were claiming that this was a hidden feature of windows, but actually it is not. It is simply using the telnet program built into windows to connect to the server that provides the movie.
